Is organic soda the way to go?

No, organic soda is not the way to go. The only way to go when it comes to soda is to skip it altogether.

Organic soda, like all soda, contains zero nutrients -- and a bigger price tag. A six-pack of the organic stuff will cost you about $5, and yes, it's made without high fructose syrup (clearly, a bonus) but each can contains 120 calories -- that's 20 more than a 12-ounce can of Coca-Cola Classic.

Cutting back on nutritionally-void foods and drinks is the best way to go, says Prevention magazine. So ditch the soda and any other organic junk food that temps your taste buds. These items might be better for the planet, but they aren't any better for you.

Natasha Bedingfield is no size zero

Who says you have to be a size zero to be beautiful? Not singer Natasha Bedingfield.

The British Bedingfield, age 26 and size six, says she'll never be stick thin. Still, she's committed to staying fit and like many celebs, credits her small waist and flat stomach to good genes. To keep it all is shape, though, she follows the Zone Diet and a strenuous exercise schedule.

Bedingfield reports that she exercises every day, using a Swiss Ball and pumping out lots of lunges and sit-ups. She has a trainer too. And she plans to begin working out with singer Pink one of these days.

New York passes trans fat test with ease

Kudos to nearly all New York City restaurants who are now complying with phase one of the city's new trans fat regulation. Those still using spreads or fry oils containing the artificial trans fat will be fined by the Health Department.

A whopping 94 percent of 3,300 restaurants inspected between July 1 and September 1 were using zero grams of trans fat. Before the regulation had passed, 50 percent were in compliance. By June, 80 percent were on board. And for the few still not passing with flying colors, it seems margarine use is the hold-up. Fines starting at $200 -- fining began on October 1 -- is the penalty for non-compliance.

"Despite claims to the contrary, New York City restaurants have shown that it's easy to get artificial trans fat out of spreads and fry oils," said Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, Health Commissioner for New York City. "New Yorkers are now enjoying more healthful foods without any change in taste or price."

Head to the outside aisles of your grocery store for fresh fruits, veggies, fish, and whole grains -- OK and maybe small amounts of healthy oils like olive and canola. This way, you'll be sure to stay out of trans fat trouble.

Zero doesn't always mean zero when it comes to trans fats

With all the bad press trans fats are getting these days it seems the most popular food labels in the grocery store are the ones screaming "Zero Trans Fats!" in huge red letters. But can you trust that zero means zero? Not necessarily. The FDA says that a label can proclaim zero grams trans fats if there's less than 1/2 gram per serving, and considering most packages contain more than one serving and we Americans have a portion control problem...well you do the math. A person could easily exceed the 'no more than 2 grams of trans fats daily' recommended by the American Heart Association.

So how can you know for sure if zero means zero? Read the label. If partially hydrogenated vegetable oil is listed then there are trans fats present, in however small amounts.
