I've been drenched this summer. About a million hours so far racing around water parks, pounding out cannonball after cannonball with my children and running laps in pools with clients striving to become more fit. I just thought I'd give credit to the one thing that's allowing me to get through it all and keep coming back for more: my pool shoes.
I tell you, they're ugly, fugly, and completely unflattering with my brown polka dotted bikini. They are, in fact, the only thing keeping me from tapping out of summer fun though. I realized this yesterday as I went to work at my client's lap pool and forgot them. Oh man! Every step I took was more excruciating than the last. It was dreadful. I also had a rotten experience a bit back when I hit Disney's Typhoon Lagoon without my fancy footwear. Between the heat, the concrete, and the sand ... my feet took quite a beating.
So! If you too, are working out in the water this summer and want to take it up a notch ... protect those tootsies and get yourself some pool shoes. They're one of the most functional fitness tools I've used all summer!

Instead of spending the summer lying like a frying fish next to the pool ... jump in! Cool off, get moving, and earn yourself a body worthy of that hot bathing suit you've been dreaming of. If you're a parent, get your butt in pool and get your kids involved as well. Family fitness should be fun and Women's Health has a great series of exercises you can do alone or all together. Don't forget your sunblock!
Wet snacks: We're not talking dog food
Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
Snacks are often "dry" -- think of crackers, granola bars, etc. And, "dry" foods are often calorie dense. "Wet" foods, like juicy apples, cucumbers, oranges, peppers, and broth-based soups are generally more nutrient dense, so you're getting more goodness from fewer calories. Plus, these foods tend to pack some fiber, so you'll not only be nourished -- you'll stay full longer, too. Don't be afraid to pair your "wet" foods with another type of food, so don't forget the nuts, string cheese, and hummus.
It's no surprise that snacking on fruits and veggies is a smart, healthy choice, but it is interesting to have a new way to look at it.
Will wearing wet hair outside make you sick?
Nope. Wet hair worn outside won't make you ill. Science proves it, say researchers at Baylor University. Here's how they know: They exposed 44 volunteers to the cold virus and had some stand in a chilly room and some in a toasty room. Those kept in the chilled space weren't any more likely to get the sniffles than anyone in the toasty room. That's because viruses cause colds, not wet hair or cold temps.
The best way to boost your immune system and keep healthy is to get enough sleep and exercise, according to SHAPE magazine. This way, your body can defend itself against any virus.
Five places mold might be lurking
- Make sure to dry hard surfaces thoroughly after cleaning them
- If absorbent materials have mold (think carpets and fabrics), you should replace them
- Fix leaky plumbing
- Keep drip pans in the air conditioner, fridge and dehumidifier clean
- Use the exhaust fans in your bathroom and kitchen when showering, cooking or using the dishwasher
- Vent your dryer outside
