Virtual reality therapy may help PTSD patients

Motivation, Alternative & Green Health

Soldier firing gunPost-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a condition that people who have endured a traumatic event such as war, a violent crime, or abuse sometimes deal with. PTSD includes symptoms such as nightmares, irrational fears, flashbacks, anxiety, and insomnia. It affects about 7.7 million American adults and it can affect children, too.

Preliminary research suggests that PTSD patients may benefit from virtual reality psychotherapy. The virtual reality helps patients relive some of their traumatic experiences while in a safe environment. Iraq war veterans took part in the study -- taking medication and using the virtual reality treatments -- and it's helped many of them confront their fears.

Virtual surfing used in physical therapy

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products

Virtual reality surfing and jogging is being used to help physiotherapy patients regain their balance and, in some cases, find the confidence to walk again.

A new system developed by MOTEK, an Israeli motion simulation company, allows technicians to modify the size of the waves and the wind speed as they put patients through their paces on an imaginary ocean.

While this marks the first time this particular system has been used in medical treatments, virtual reality has been utilized by doctors for some time. It's used to help patients overcome phobias by simulating the feared experience, to aid combat soldiers in overcoming post-traumatic stress disorder, or even to distract patients undergoing chemotherapy.

So far, the MOTEK system seems to be producing better and faster results. However, it's important to note that virtual reality cannot replace the healing process, only assist it.

Virtual reality helps young burn patients

Motivation

The multiple ways in which technology can help certain patients with medical issues never ceases to amaze me -- and it gets neater and more productive all the time.

Young patients with burn injuries can sometimes have a difficult trip back to normalcy -- but in new studies, exposing these kids to alternative forms of treatment -- virtual treatment -- can do wonders for their recovery.

Distraction from the daily torment of rehabilitation -- much of it painful -- can be largely distressing to younger burn victims -- but giving a very real diversion during these processes can be lifesavers according to some of the parents of young burn victims.
