Valerie Bertinelli: Losing it and Keeping Fit

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Valerie Bertinelli is a total inspiration. She worked hard, lost weight, and looks amazing. And now, she has a fitness DVD -- "Valerie Bertinelli: Losing it and Keeping Fit."

The DVD is divided into three sections: a 20-minute Level 1 workout, a 40-minute Level 2 workout, and then Bonus Features. Both workouts feature Bertinelli with celebrity personal trainer Christopher Ross Lane, who was instrumental in helping the actress sculpt her new body.

Obviously, the workouts worked for Bertinelli. But is this DVD right for you? I tested out both workouts to find out.

'Results Not Typical' Banned From Diet Ads

The Federal Trade Commission handed down a new set of guidelines on Monday that remove the words "results not typical" from advertising. In one fell swoop, all those ads that we've been living with for years are gone. For Valerie Bertinelli and a host of other celebrity weight-loss endorsers, this might mean that they're out of a job.

The last time the rules were updated was 1980. During that time, the diet industry flourished under the "results not typical" tagline, not revealing what the weight-loss superstar being portrayed actually did to achieve her fab new bod.

From now on, it has to be spelled out in one of two ways. Either the advertiser can say, "Ms. Glamazon lost 50 pounds in six months by going to the gym six days a week, doing tons of cardio and taking our product." Or Ms. Glamazon can strut her stuff on TV or in a magazine, and the advertiser must say something to the effect of, the average person loses 15 pounds in six months on this product.

This will provide a much more realistic view of these weight-loss products.

My guess is that we'll discover that the usual amounts of exercise more and eat less work like a charm, with or without said wonder products. I, for one, am looking forward to a lot less enticement and a lot more realism.

For more information on realistic weight loss, check out these five rules.

Jessica Alba lost no time in losing the baby weight, but did you know she incorporated her love of video games into her fitness routine?

Are you tired of hearing about Jennifer Lopez's triathlon yet? She completed it last weekend. Find out whether she crossed the finish line with flying colors or not here.

There's no doubt that Jennie Garth looks just as good on 90210 this time around as she did the first time the series aired, but to get her body in rocking shape, she's relying on one really interesting technique -- keeping her muscles confused.

Valerie Bertinelli gets cozy in her skin

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

It's been one whole year since Valerie Bertinelli dropped 40 pounds as Jenny Craig spokeswoman and still, she's trying to get cozy in her new skin.

"I'm just getting more and more comfortable in this body," said Bertinelli. "It's still a journey. I'm not done yet."

Bertinelli, now weighing in at 132 pounds, just recently paraded down the red carpet at the Creative Arts Emmys, where she presented three awards and sported a dress by David Meister, who she says knows a woman's body: "It's okay to have a small waist and big hips," said Bertinelli, referring to her body and his masterpiece.

Next up for the former One Day at a Time star and author of bestselling book Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound at a Time: A daytime talk show. It's in the works, and is scheduled to air next year.

Valerie Bertinelli says Kirstie Alley is not fat

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Forget about any fat photos you've seen of Kirstie Alley lately. Valerie Bertinelli says her friend and fellow Jenny Craig spokeswoman is not packing on the pounds.

"I don't know what those photographs might say, and I don't necessarily see a lot of them," says Bertinelli. "I have heard of them, but I disagree. When I have been with Kirstie, she looks terrific."

Who knows what's going on. Maybe Alley is gaining back some of the weight she lost on the Jenny Craig program. Maybe the photographs splashed on across the Internet and on the pages of magazines were taken from bad angles -- hey, I've been a victim of a not-so-flattering photo on many an occasion. Maybe the media just needs to stir up some controversy in skinny Hollywood and Alley is their target. Something tells me Alley isn't so concerned about what the public thinks. She seems a pretty tough gal who is usually pretty happy in her skin, no matter it's size or shape.

Celebrity moms Cate Blanchett and Halle Berry are out and about and looking amazing. Halle dished up the details on what she's doing to get her body back, but Cate, as usual, hasn't really made mention. Cate looked like she was right back to her pre-baby svelte figure this week at the Cannes Film Festival, and it's only been four weeks since she gave birth to her newest son. Do you think it's natural that her body bounced back so quickly, or does it have more to do with the pressure a 39-year-old actress faces in Hollywood?

Valerie Bertinelli, who dropped weight last year alongside Kirstie Alley with Jenny Craig, is working hard to maintain the slim figure she achieved, but she's not complaining about it. She's continuing to follow the good habits that helped her lose weight, which means no snacking in front of the television and making sure she gets in 10,000 steps each day. With her healthy new figure came another bonus -- a rediscovery of her love of being in the water. Valerie has gotten back into watersports, like surfing. It's great to see her maintaining her weight and living a healthful life!

Sarah Ferguson admits that she continues to have negative body image issues on a daily basis, saying, "I think I'm fat, ugly, and disgusting -- that I'm unworthy and nobody likes me." The formal royal has an interesting way of dealing with these problems -- after her daily morning workout, she takes an ice bath and feels "invigorated" for the rest of the day. Hey, whatever works, right?

Eddie Van Halen's health in question

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Jenny Craig spokeswoman Valerie Bertinelli has been in the news a lot lately, announcing her 40-pound weight loss and high-fiving talk show hosts about her new lease on life. Bertinelli's ex-husband, Eddie Van Halen, is making news too. His story is not as bright and cheery as hers.

The band Van Halen has reportedly postponed four concerts while guitarist Eddie Van Halen undergoes medical treatment.

"The Van Halen concerts in Dallas, Cincinnati, Raleigh, and Baltimore have been postponed," reads a new message on the band's Web site. "According to Eddie Van Halen's physician, he is undergoing a battery of comprehensive medical tests to determine a defined diagnosis and recommended medical procedures."

In 2002, Eddie Van Halen announced he was cancer-free after a two-year battle with tongue cancer.

Your Turn: Best celeb slim-downs in 2007

Your Turn, Celebs & Entertainment

Here at That's Fit, we're constantly telling you what we think about things, but sometimes it's nice to know what you think. So from time to time, we'll ask you a question. Don't be afraid to speak up -- we love feedback.

2007 was the year that many celebrities got fit and slim. And you know what? Good for them. Losing weight takes hard work and dedication, whether you're a celebrity or not. Some stars battled the baby weight, while some simply decided to tone up and trim down. In any case, here are some of my favourite celeb slim-downs -- let me know who tops your list, either by voting below or leaving a comment:

Best Celeb Slim-downs

Who was your favourite slim-down celeb in 2007?

Valerie did it!

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Well, after much scrutiny and a little doubt, Valerie Bertinelli has reached her goal and lost the 30 pounds she set out to lose, with a little help from co-spokesperson Kirstie Alley and a lot of help from Jenny Craig. Good for her! She's done what so many are struggling to do -- she's revamped her life, become healthier and lost a lot of weight in the process. Now the question is: Will she be going on Oprah in her bikini too?

I've known a few people who've done Jenny Craig with no success, but this is proof that it can work. Have you done Jenny Craig? Did it work for you? Or is her success down to the pressure of TV, paparazzi and a lucrative contract?

How much weight has Valerie really lost?

Celebs & Entertainment

I thank my lucky stars every day that I'm not famous and don't have to endure embarrassing photos and headlines like this one from US magazine (via the Skinny Website.) The picture of Valerie Bertinelli in an unflattering bikini is splashed with the headline Valerie's Diet Disaster. Apparently, while she looked smoking hot on July 8 after supposedly losing 30 lbs (like she's pictured here), the photo snapped on July 17 shows a much frumpier Valerie, who clearly has not lost 30 lbs. What's the deal?

US Magazine thinks they're on to her secret -- Spanx, those body-shaping spandex things that you wear under your outfits. I think I know another secret to why she looks awful in the bathing suit photo -- it's taken at a really unflattering angle with unflattering light. Remember the Tyra Banks affair? Maybe it's time we stop being so quick to label someone as fat and realize that we are all horribly unphotogenic at times. Don't you think?

Jenny Craig's latest diet spokesperson: Valerie Bertinelli

Celebs & Entertainment

She graced the cover of PEOPLE magazine last week -- 80s TV star Valerie Bertinelli is on a promotional kick to let people know that she is the new Kirstie Alley, as in the new TV icon whose turned to Jenny Craig for help with her weight (and her career slump as well?) Bertinelli says she's doing the whole weight loss thing in the public eye because she's just like everyone else -- a working mum. Jenny Craig is a popular weight-loss program that uses pre-packed foods to aid in weightloss, though how that kind of diet plan pays off during the maintenance phase of the diet is unclear to me. What's also unclear is if she too will appear on Oprah in her bikini.

What do you think ... is she an inspiration to all or just money and publicity-hungry?
