Reasons to love soccer

Fitness

kid playing soccerMy son is starting soccer practice soon, and I can't wait. Last season, he had so much fun... and I did, too. Parents aren't required to stay at practices, but I attended every one. I think it was good for my son, because I got to observe the drills and skills the coach was teaching the kids. Then, my son and I practiced them at home. It's end up being extra practice for my son and great exercise for me!

Tournaments and games were fun, too. I loved seeing my son work so hard and excel at a sport. It's such a positive environment to encourage his love of sports, work on social skills, and bolster his self-esteem. And I had fun getting to know all the other parents and cheering on our team.

But, except for in the younger set, soccer doesn't have quite the following that other sports have in the US. Caught Offside lists seven reasons that Americans should learn to love soccer.

Randy Pausch of "The Last Lecture" gets recognized by the President

Although I will expand on Randy Pausch, I imagine you're already well aware of who he is. He's the unstoppable man, who has inspired millions and millions of people around the world by his passion for life while he fights an almost impossible battle with pancreatic cancer. I learned of Dr. Pausch many months ago as Diane Sawyer interviewed him on ABC. He blew me away with his humor, dedication to his family, and outrageous courage.

His journey since his diagnosis put him on stage at the University he was a professor at, Carnegie Mellon, for his Last Lecture. This Last Lecture made it to YouTube (embedded below) and then became a best selling book, The Last Lecture. His outlook on life and stories of his childhood and career have inspired other cancer patients to fight harder and regular people to just be better. Although he's truly only concerned with getting his message across to his three young children, he's positively affected millions of others as a side effect.

Recently, President Bush was compelled to write to Randy Pausch. This can't change Randy's fate with cancer, but as a representative of the American people ... it was a fantastic way to show our appreciation for Randy setting a new standard for 'goodness' and dedicating his life to teaching others.

As KickYourButtIntoGear.com is owned and managed by a fellow expert in the field of fitness, Exercise Physiologist, Tracy Benham ... the tips are awesome advice for you and you family to adhere to!

  • Sports and summertime go together. Plan an activity early in the day. Play baseball, touch football; go to the local pool or beach.
  • Get outside early and see if you can think of and do more than four activities before four o'clock to celebrate the Fourth.
  • Eat a bowl of fruit before you head for the barbecue goodies. Tons of fruits are in season. Make a Fourth of July fruit cocktail. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries...
  • Use a plate. You will be less tempted to mindlessly snack.
  • Skip the cheese and the Mayo on your burger and load up on lettuce tomatoes, pickles, onions and relish.
  • Alternate cocktails and other caloric beverages with a glass of water. Or ... just avoid the high calorie beverages all together!

When jog strollers threaten a run

Fitness

I packed my 38-pound five-year-old into a jog stroller this morning and pushed him up and down six hills in my neighborhood. It felt good -- the early-morning workout, the time with Danny, the extra effort it took to heave him up incline after incline. It was peaceful too. We were the only ones braving the hills at the time so no one was in our way. We didn't bother anyone either. Jog strollers can be problematic, though. There's a certain etiquette, actually, for these exercise contraptions.

As long as you're walking, jogging, or strolling through parks and on sidewalks, you have nothing to worry about. But head into a race event with your jog stroller and beware. You may be shunned as you crowd out fellow participants and shout "on your left" declarations as you pass your opponents by. Runners just don't want to be beaten by strollers and worse yet, tripped by them. USA Track & Field race directors don't even allow them.

The message here is this: Think before you stroll. Make sure your kid and your apparatus are appropriate for the setting you seek. And before you register for your next race event, check to make sure it's a stroller-friendly event.

Second annual "America's 50 Best Hospitals"

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Interested in finding out which hospitals rank in the upper echelon of health care facilities? Thankfully we have organizations whose sole purpose it is to do that sort of thing. Enter HealthGrades, who has put out their second annual America's 50 Best Hospitals list just today.

Even though this is the second iteration of the report, hospitals were ranked based on their quality starting back in 2003. Certain elements of health care were assessed to provide a basis. For instance, they looked at the procedures surrounding heart attacks, pneumonia, and strokes.

They also looked at mortality data. So you want to know the best already? They were listed in alphabetical order, so it should be easy to find your local facilities that way. Notables included the Mayo Clinic Hospital, St. Joseph's out of Atlanta, and the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles. Anyone have any experience with our nation's best?

Fast food: Banned in the USA?

Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Healthy Kids, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health

I was listening to Shawn Hannity's talk show today while the great debate on fast food continued. Should fast food joints be banned in the USA? Lots of people think so. Others think they should stay, and we should take responsibility for controlling excessive use of the most fat-laden caloric products.

Some believe fried drumsticks and onion rings are a sin to be made. Could it be true that the "evil" folks at KFC and Burger King are purposely trying to poison the American public? Maybe we should all just get a grip and learn to visit these restaurants less frequently or simply order the healthy choices while we're there.

As a fitness pro, I've mixed emotions on the subject. Knowing what horrible repercussions the worst of fast food can do to a person, of course I wish it didn't even exist. I wish the fast food execs would simply have a conscience and resolve to serve super healthy food. That sure would make a "know it all" like me happy.

Minnesota is the healthiest state

Celebs & Entertainment

That good old southern cookin' generally has a bad reputation health-wise, and it seems it deserves it. Southern states, including Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama are among the unhealthiest states in the USA, with Louisiana taking the infamous title of most unhealthy. On the other hand, Minnesota was names the healthiest state, and had Vermont, New Hampshire and Connecticut as its main competitors.

The list takes in consideration factors like obesity, prevalence of infectious disease, percentage of population that smokes, death rates, infant mortality rates and more. Minnesota, which has taken the top spot in this list for 11 out of the 17 previous years, boasts a high amount of residents with health insurance, low rates of premature deaths and low rates of cardiovascular deaths -- I guess the fresh air does make a big difference!
