Miss Piggy - Has the Diva Slimmed Down?
We know that human celebs are somewhat obsessed with slimming down. It's part of the Hollywood scene, they say. Now, it seems the trim-down trend is catching on with Muppet celebs too. The one and only Miss Piggy was spotted on "The View" on Thursday looking, well, less piggish. I guess Muppets are not immune to the pressures of fame and it was only a matter of time before the Diva herself caved and went all skinny on us. Well, she's not exactly skeletal. She's just leaner than she once was.
Sources are not naming the star's secret diet weapon, but Miss Piggy has been caught on video working out. Well, sort of. And "People" magazine has some before and after shots for your viewing pleasure. Tell us what you think -- is the pig less plump or what?
5 Reasons You Need to Be Really Skinny
There are five really great reasons to be incredibly skinny. I think you'll agree with these.
- You are a contortionist.
- You're in jail and want to avoid all the effort it takes to create a master escape plan and just slide out through the bars of your cell.
- You want to hide behind small tress.
- You are part of an ice skating team with some dude spinning you around over his head.
- You are starring in a movie in which your character was lost at sea and has been stranded on an island for a long time.
Yep. These are the best reasons I can think of. Skinny or trim (which is the word I prefer) is fine if that's what you naturally are, as long as the term suits you in a healthy way. But "skinny" is not something I would hope people would strive for. Healthy and fit are far more important concerns than "skinny."

Are You Suffering from "Oprah Syndrome?"

No ... I'm not asking if you're painfully bright, wealthy and generous. I'm referring to the Oprah Syndrome as: Having lost and regained enormous amounts of weight more times than you can count. If you've lost a bunch of weight through dieting or just plain old great fitness habits, yet at some point just broke down and regained it all back, you're suffering from Oprah Syndrome.
I've been teaching fitness for 20 years now, and I've dealt with many people suffering the same condition. It's extremely painful to watch, and it's really frustrating for both those going through it and those who love them. I call it Oprah Syndrome because Oprah has made this agonizing situation famous. She has all the means, tools and professionals around to help keep her on track but at some point, she mentally just can't take it.
Gaining five pounds back can be accidental. Gaining 60 to 80+ pounds back is oddly deliberate. She could have hit the breaks when she gained 10, 20 or 30, but she didn't. I believe her issue is emotional, and she simply won't allow herself the life and/or perks that go along with being fit and trim. I'm no psychiatrist, but after doing this about a bazillion times, it's hard not to know the trends.
How Much Weight Gain Would You Tolerate?

I just read an article in People magazine about that morbidly obese lady Ruby who's losing weight on her television show. She once weighed more than 700 pounds, and I think she's now down to almost 400. This is fabulous news, and I congratulate her on her triumphs. She made a statement in the article that intrigued me, though, and I'm curious about how it translates for the rest of you.
Ruby basically said that knowing she was "almost one thousand pounds" made her put her foot down. At that point, she knew she needed to lose weight. I'm thrilled she made that decision, but why wasn't she shocked when she closed in on 500?
I've seen her interviewed and she seems like a lovely lady ... who just happens to have a very high breaking point. What is yours? What amount of weight gain is or would be acceptable to you? When counseling my clients, I encourage them to monitor their weight a few times a month. If they've gained more than two pounds, I suggest they quickly return to their healthier habits so they can maintain their ideal weight. Ten pounds is hard to lose, three is not so tough.

A. Hello Mr. Bill, I'm so happy you wrote. You're not the only one out there who truly feels stuck at a weight you're not happy with. That feeling is both frustrating and rampant. Having said that, I believe I know what's preventing you from losing that weight. In my book, 80% of weight loss comes as a result of our consumption habits. You're probably just underestimating the amount of calories you're consuming.

This week I've been sampling Dannon's Light & Fit 0% Plus Yogurt, and I absolutely love it. Before I go any further though, let me tell you how I feel about yogurt. I like it, but only if I feel like I'm getting a high in calcium, low in sugar, legitimately fruit-filled snack. Now, there is always yogurt stacked up in my fridge, because I have two little children. But, rarely do I even open up a cup for myself. Not that I would ever buy my babies anything "bad"... cause I don't. But I regularly expect perfection of the things I put in my mouth. I'm simply not willing to waste 100 calories on a teeny cup of yogurt. I'd rather have two big pieces of fruit.
So! I was thrilled instantly by the calorie count on Dannon's new Light & Fit 0% Plus Yogurt. Each cup boasts only 50 or 60 calories, depending on the flavor. That I can do! The fruity varieties are also full of real fruit chunks. Fresh and healthy fruit chunks, not the icky stuff dumped in from a can. On top of all that, each flavor has proven to be delicious to both my children and me, and then a few of my personal training clients as well.
Before you go give Dannon's Light & Fit 0% Plus Yogurt a try, I encourage you to do a side-by-side comparison of it's nutritional content versus that of other yogurts. I did this a few days ago and couldn't find anything as good. This is the type of thing you want to put in your fridge if you're trying to lose weight. It's a great fix for your sweet tooth, while providing a decent amount of protein, calcium, vitamin D and other important nutrients.

Ready for another "I eat everything and don't gain any weight" story? Here's one, by Sex and the City star Sarah Jessica Parker."I eat everything," the actress, 43, says. "I'm just an eater. If it's free, I honestly eat everything."
To prove her point, Parker shared with PEOPLE magazine a list of the foods she'd eaten in the 48 hours prior to her diet confession.
"Last night I had steak and some lamb shank," she said. "And I had some roasted chicken and some cassoulet and some profiteroles and some ice cream and some cheesecake."
Another example: On Monday, "I had two different tarts from Once Upon a Tart [in SoHo] and toast and a banana and a cup of coffee and a bagel with cream cheese," she said. Oh, yeah: "And a glass of fresh orange juice."
While she doesn't gather up many calories from alcohol -- "I'm just simply not really a drinker," she says -- Parker definitely enjoys her food.
So how does she stay so slim and trim? Predisposition probably, says Parker. And Pilates -- although she hasn't worked out in weeks. And running around after her 5-year-old son. Oh, and anxiety too, she says.

How often do you exercise? I eat seven days a week, and I exercise seven days a week!
What type of exercise do you do? Power walking, light weight training (for muscle tone), and yoga (for balance, flexibility, and occasionally turning my organs upside down). I think there's something really healthy about moving your organs around!
Get fit for your own red carpet

- Aim for an hour of cardio every day. Make it intense and sustained cardio and keep your target heart rate to 85 percent of your max. To calculate a general target heart rate, take 220 minus your age and multiply by .85. If you don't have a heart rate monitor, count your pulse for 6 seconds and multiply that number by 10.
- Exercise first thing in the morning and go for another round of cardio later in the day. This is called "split training" and is one of Joujon-Roche's secrets to dropping pounds.
- Don't focus a lot on intense strength training if slim and trim is your goal. Stick with basic body-weight exercises such as crunches, planks, lunges, and squats. Keep your focus on aerobic activity. Keep the sweat flowing. If you do want to pump up a bit, do circuit training and skip the rest breaks so you keep your heart rate up. And do 50 push-ups every day (not necessarily all in a row).
- Watch your calorie consumption. The wrong diet can easily undo the calorie burn from all that cardio. Eat veggies, veggies, and more veggies. Add some lean protein such as white fish or salmon.
- Let your body restore. Every other day, take 30 minutes or longer to sit still by yourself with zero interruptions. Simply stretch, breathe, and be. Clear your mind and remind yourself of what an amazing person you are.
