Editor Trades Car Service for Bike

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Editor of Self magazine, Lucy Danziger, has the option of getting a free ride to work every morning. Nevermind the black town car provided by Condé Nast. Insead, Danziger is practicing what she preaches on the pages of her magazine, riding her bike to work most days, according to The New York Times.

The motivation behind this choice is twofold. For one thing, it's active and healthy, which fits right in with Danziger's lifestyle. According to The New York Times, on the morning they caught up with the editor, she'd already run six miles before leaving (on her bike) at 8 a.m.

Additionally, it's a nod to the chilly economic climate. With all of the publications Condé Nast has shut down and the budget cuts they've asked remaining mags to make, it makes perfect sense that employees would find alternate means of transportation. It seems as though Danziger is leading by example, however, can you imagine Anna Wintour doing such a thing?

Fit Gadgets: Trikke

Fitness, Reviews & Products

Want a new way to get around that keeps your feel off the ground while keeping your core, legs, and arms engaged? You might want to consider a Trikke (pronounced trike), which is a three-wheeled cambering vehicle that's human powered. So, like a bike, but also, not at all. Understand?

Basic physics are involved in making it go -- the rider moves his center of gravity toward the center of a turn he's making. By making these turns, you increase your speed, so you can work really hard and go as fast as 18 mph, or take it easy and creep along at a much slower pace. If that's not making much sense, check out the Trikke website, where they have pictures and video to explain it better.

There are several models available, with kids' versions running $79.99 and the most elaborate version, the T12 Roadster, coming in at $599.99. The T78, which looks like the basic adult version, sells on Trikke's website for $249.99. There's also a Skki version for snow, ringing up at $899.99. Refurbished versions of some of the models are also available at a reduced price.

Fit Gadgets: ElliptiGO Glide Bike

Fitness

Have you ever been at the gym, kicking butt on the elliptical, only to look outside and see a perfect, gorgeous day that you're missing because you're in a gym? Or, do you like the idea of biking for fun, fitness, or transportation, but have less love for some of the things that come with biking (seat pain, hunched over position, catching on chain, etc.)? If so, you might want to get on the wait list for the elliptiGO Glide Bike.

The elliptiGO is a cross between a bike and an elliptical trainer, "combining the best aspects of running and cycling to create a fun and effective means of exercising outdoors." Since you're in a standing position while riding it, you have increased visibility and a distinct lack of pain in the genitals (because, be honest -- how many of you have opted out of a long bike ride because you knew how bad your privates would hurt afterward? I'm always amazed that true cyclists can ever have sex!).

It's easily modifiable, so you can go at your own pace using your own stride. There are eight gears, allowing you to work really hard and go as fast as 25 mph, or cruise along at closer to 6mph.

The safest SUVs: Bigger isn't better

Reviews & Products

There's always been a general consensus when it comes to safe vehicles that bigger is safer, but that's really not the case. Not only is bigger not safer, in some cases it's actually more dangerous to drive a larger vehicle. The Ford Excursion, for example, had 3 times the death rate of the smaller Excursion and twice that of the mid-sized Explorer (it's now a discontinued model). To help us all figure this out Forbes has compiled all the data from crash test ratings, available electronic stability control, and accident avoidance statistics to come up with a list of the 15 safest SUVs, and here are the top 5:

Bike-Shares: Creating a green, fit community.

Alternative & Green Health

As the world takes steps to become greener, finding environmentally-friendly, cost effective, convenient transportation is one of the top issues on people's minds. Here's an idea that I just saw on Fitsugar: Bike Shares! Basically, the program allows you to ride a bike to your destination, whether you own it or not. You can get a bike by swiping a card, ride it to your destination and then drop it off at the nearest bike share rack for someone else to use. Not only it is good for the environment, it's good for your health too.

I think it's a super idea and one that I would use. And since I just went bike shopping and saw how much those things are, it's an inexpensive way for people to get fit and get where they're going.

Ambulance equipped for obese emergency patients only

Diet & Weight Loss

The paramedics team and potential patients in Calgary, Alberta Canada have a new tool at their disposal to make emergency responses and treatment even better: a specialized ambulance for extremely obese patients. Designed to make it safer for both the patients and the paramedics, the "bariatric response team" will be reserved for patients weighing between 400 and 1000 pounds. Equipped with special gear like a hydraulic lift and fancy air mattress to make positioning large patients easier, this new ambulance will mean some patients who used to be unable to transport in an emergency vehicle at all can now do so safely and with dignity.

Go green stylishly with one of Schwinn's new electric bikes

Alternative & Green Health

Want to do your part for the environment by biking it, but need a little extra oomph getting up the hills? Well then, good news for you: electric bikes are looking less "mad scientist contraption" all the time. Electric bikes are becoming everything we love about scooters without being, well... a scooter. Check out the latest models from Schwinn - the concealed batteries and motor make them barely discernible from a regular old-school Schwinn, but after a 4 hour charge they've got enough power to give you 40 miles of pedal-free drive time, and they only weigh about 40 pounds.
