Healthy Recipe: Apple turkey picadillo

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

picadillo cooking on stovetopA pica-who? I didn't know what a picadillo was either, but I was sure enamored with this delicious recipe.

This traditional Latin American dish usually consists of ground beef and seasonings, sometimes with veggies added. It can be used to stuff a taco or served with beans and rice.

So the apple turkey picadillo recipe I fell in love with is definitely a twist on tradition, but a clever and welcome -- and healthy! -- one, in my opinion. Imagine the sweet-tart of the apple combining with the cumin and Worcestershire sauce ... I can almost smell it sauteing on the stove.

Taco Bell gives free tacos to dieters

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

I know that every time that I make an effort to lose a few pounds, the first thing I think is usually not, "Hmmm, maybe Taco Bell for lunch." Fast food restaurants are often trying to change that unhealthy image, and Taco Bell is no exception. They have their "fresco" menu, nine items with nine grams of fat or less. And in Oklahoma City, they're giving away one free taco to residents as a reward for their weight loss efforts.

The restaurant teamed up with the local mayor in a city-wide weight loss challenge. When residents reached 100,000 pounds lost, Taco Bell decided to give everyone one free taco. I initially wanted to be critical of this partnership, since fast food is often loaded with fat, salt, and excessive calories. But I'm starting to think that Oklahoma City residents may have found that happy balance between eating right and enjoying a healthy indulgence now and then... even a free taco.

Eva Mendes likes junk food

Celebs & Entertainment

Few can deny that Eva Mendes is incredibly gorgeous and many would give their left arm to look like her. And unfortunately, she's one of those people, those stunning celebrities with perfect bodies who annoyingly insist that they eat junk food all the time -- and it's all down to good genes that keep them from getting fat. Here's what Eva has to say about her favourite indulgence:

Mmmmm, tacos and french fries and milkshakes. Sounds delicious ... and deadly to us normal people. Whether you believe that she actually eats that or not, it's frustrating for those of us who just have to look at a piece of cake to gain weight. But it must be nice to be her, right?

Healthy eating tip: Skip the tortilla when eating Mexican

Diet & Weight Loss

I love Mexican. Looooooooooooove it. But it's usually considered a diet no-no. I guess tortillas, re-fried beans, cheese and sour cream aren't the best for the waistline. But the key to healthy long-term changes is finding ways to enjoy the things you love without the guilt.

So if it's Mexican you love, here are some suggestions: Get your fix in salad form, without the tortilla or taco shell. Trade re-fried beans for regular beans (like black beans). Use low-fat cheese and sour cream in moderation, and choose lean protein sources, like chicken breast. I cook mine with Tex Mex spice and it's delicious.
