Fit Links: Beach fitness

As fabulous as we at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

If you've ever trudged across yards of hot sand carrying gear for a day at the beach, then you know that walking on dry sand is considerably harder than walking on a flat surface. That's what makes the beach a perfect place to build your summer fitness. By walking or running on the beach, you're not only burning about 1.6% more calories than normal, you'll also build additional strength in your leg muscles.

Workout Mommy shares her personal beach workout with us. Be Hollywood has some tips for a safe beach workout. Finally, in the video below, Derek Duke Noble will show you how to do a complete leg workout on the beach.

Don't forget that besides running and walking in the sand, there are other ways to get fit at the beach, including swimming, biking, volleyball, and rollerblading. Keep in mind that beach workouts are significantly harder than conventional workouts, so plan to do less than usual and listen to your body so you don't get overheated.

How to keep your kid active this summer

Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

The freedom of unscheduled summer months away from school, phys ed class, and extra-curricular activities could result in a sedentary child. To keep your child active, try these tips during summer break.

Avoid snacking and screen time. No matter what they're up to -- whether it's TV, video games or the computer -- studies show that kids who spend the most time sitting in front of a screen are the most-likely to end up obese. That, coupled with snacking, could make for a very unhealthy vacation.

Work for a consistent bed time. It's hard -- especially because, without school, there's technically no "reason" for kids to be in bed early. However, a well-rested child will be much more active.

Avoid summer skin issues. There's a number of summer skin problems that can keep a kid cooped up indoors. Learn what they are and how to avoid them to make sure your child isn't forced to take time out from outdoor activities.

Above all, fitness for kids is the same as adults. If they're eating healthy, and getting enough exercise, they'll be just fine.
