Daily Fit Tip: Learn to be Sugar Savvy

We know that sugar is a dieter's number one enemy. So we diligently avoid cake, cookies and candy. We purge our kitchen of ice cream and soda. We stock up on artificial sweeteners. And yet we're still consuming sugar. But from where?

AOL Body recently revealed some surprising sources of sugar, including:

  • Deli Meats
  • Ketchup
  • Vanilla Soy Milk
  • Bagels
  • Spaghetti sauce
  • Canned peas
  • Salad dressings

Are these part of your 'healthy diet'? If so, make sure you're checking the labels -- if the sugar content is too high, skip it for the sake of your shrinking waistline.

Weight loss with sugar

Contrary to what diet experts have now been telling us for over a decade, researchers from Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh reportedly found that it's not necessary to cut simple sugar (sucrose) from our diets in order to lose weight. In fact, the researchers posit that diets are more strictly adhered to when the dieter consumes small amounts of sucrose on a regular basis.

Writing in a 2007 issue of International Journal of Food Science and Nutrition, the researchers stated that the results of their study showed the greatest reduction in body weight and BMI loss resulted in dieters who included sugar in their diet. The researchers further stated that their results "contribute to the growing body of evidence that an effective way to lose weight is by adhering to a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet and by being physically active." They also added "it also provides evidence that the exclusion of sucrose, as is normally advocated in a weight loss diet, is not necessary to achieve weight reduction."

Fruit and veggie juice better than just fruit juice

Are you a fruit juice fan? It's an easy way to get a dose of fresh fruit every day without juicing your own fruits. However, the brand and type of fruit juice you choose makes a world of difference on the health benefits you'll see.

Pasteurized juices and ones made from mostly refined sugar can be nutritionally worthless, even when they taste good. Finding juices that are gently or non-pasteurized (which is very difficult to do) are your best bet outside of juicing your own organic fruits.

How about those fruit and vegetable juices that combine those all-important veggies with fruits that can mask the taste? Kagome is a great choice if you've haven't tried it (the purple blend is delicious). There are other choices as well, from the V8 brand (owned by Campbell's Soup) and others. Choose one that is great for you with a great taste.

Your sweet tooth is bad for your health -- ways sugar harms you

In case weight gain, tooth decay and lack of energy weren't reason enough for you to give up the sweets, here's some more incentive: Sugar actually harms your health. I'm not sure if the article is intended as a scare tactic by savvy business-types, but apparently it can interfere with immune system functioning, lead to the development of diabetes, increase stress, slow down cognition in children and lead to a deficiency of other more important nutrients in your diet. Wowza! And if this still isn't enough to make you consider giving up dessert, it can make your skin sag! Scary, huh?

It's easier said than done -- trust me, I know -- better than most people. But it's worth a try, right? You don't have to give up dessert forever -- just try to limit it to, say, special occasions ... such as Saturday nights.
