800,000 eggs consumed at Athletic Village

Not only will the combined competitors, coaches, and staff at the Summer Games be consuming 800,000 eggs, they'll also be throwing down more than one million apples, 936,000 bananas, 312,000 oranges, and 684,000 carrots. Courtesy of the Olympic food provider Aramark, here's what else the group dining at the Beijing Athletic Village will be ingesting.


  • 93,000 pounds of seafood
  • 260,000 pounds of meat
  • 38,000 pounds of pasta (dry)
  • 134,000 pounds of rice (dry)
  • 70,000 gallons of milk
  • 400,000 boxes of cereal

In total, 28,000 Olympic folks will eat 3.5 million meals. Now, that's a lot of food. Fortunately, most of the crew will be burning their fair share of calories.

Regis and Kelly feature staff slim down

Three years ago, seven staffers from the Live with Regis and Kelly show faced off in a fitness and weight loss challenge. Partnering with SELF magazine's exercise and nutrition experts, these challengers lost loads of weight and body fat. Fast forward to now and many have gained back both the pounds and the fat. Some put on a little weight -- one contestant gained one pound -- and some are carrying upwards of 20 extra pounds. So they're back at it -- the same seven, another 12-week challenge, again with SELF magazine, and this time the stakes are higher: Everyone involved wants the results to stick.

It's not always people who fail at weight loss, remarked one SELF editor on Tuesday's Regis and Kelly weigh-in show. In fact, 85 percent of those who lose weight gain it back. It's often the diets that fail. Find the right diet, the right exercise, the right commitment and change should be permanent -- right? Only time will tell for this crew.

Money motivates employees to slim down

The contestants on NBC's The Biggest Loser compete in the ultimate of weight loss challenges hopefully for the sake of overall health and fitness but first and foremost for money. Lots of money. The one who comes out "the biggest loser" at the end of the show takes home $250,000. That's quite a chunk of change. And quite a motivator too.

Money motivates. And employers are starting to capitalize on this fact by paying staff members to slim down. It beats paying medical and absenteeism costs for overweight employees. And it seems to work.

Studies show overweight employees who were compensated for their weight loss efforts lost more weight than those who received no monetary reward. Now it's not clear whether or not participants will keep the weight off or if this strategy will be profitable for companies in the long-term, but financial incentives are surely worth a try.
