Q. Fitz - I've seen you offer advice for women with "love handles" before, but do you have any for a man? My whole midsection is flabby and I'd like to reign it in. Thanks, Lars
A. Hi Lars, Thanks for your question. You're right, I have answered this question before (to see that feature, click here for "Love Handles and Man Boobs." Love Handles, Man Handles, Damn Handles ... call them what you want, but my answer will always be the same. Those pockets of fat sitting above your hips are just that. Pockets of fat! All the silly side bends in the world won't make them go away unless you do one thing.
Guys - Get Your Own Body-Shaping Underwear
Don't feel left out by the Spanx revolution, guys. Female celebs like Isla Fisher and Eva Longoria have admitted to wearing body-shaping undergarments. But there are options for men, too.A BBC Newsbeat report recently put the men's body shapers to the test -- from underwear that's supposed to prevent muffin tops and lift the butt, to undershirts that are supposed to lift, tighten and shape. So there you go, guys. While you're working out and trying to get your body healthy and fit, you can get a little help from some underwear.
We know Isla and Eva love their Spanx. But I wonder what guy celebs have some serious shape-wear underneath their designer duds.
Isla Fisher Hides the Damage with Spanx
After giving birth to daughter Olive almost a year and a half ago, it was up to Isla Fisher to lose the 60 pounds of pregnancy weight before filming the much-anticipated (by me, anyway ...) upcoming Confessions of a Shopaholic movie. But she says she's lucky because "I was blessed with good genes because I had a really bad attitude towards exercise - like stopping when it hurt or got boring and having a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Apparently you are not supposed to do that in Hollywood."Thank goodness, then, for Spanx, those miracle undergarments that tone and trim in all the right places. Of the popular product she told reporters: "I swear my waist now is skinnier than it was when I was pregnant -- how do they do that?" She's not alone -- mega celebs like Oprah and Eva Longoria-Parker owe allegiance to Spanx too. And I'm with them.
So, ladies, us common folk aren't the only ones who've made Spanx a regular part of out wardrobe. Nice to know, isn't it?
Eva Longoria-Parker Relies on Control-Top Panties Too
Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria-Parker made headlines a couple of months ago when she gained weight for her role on the TV show and famously admitted she was 'not pregnant, just fat.' These days, the weight's gone, but Longoria-Parker recently fessed up about her slimmer figure by revealing that she relies on those magic weapons that all modern women have in their closets -- Spanx. The revelation came after the actress was spotted looking fab at a party hosted by Allure magazine.
I, for one, feel better knowing that even tiny, gorgeous women like Eva don the Spanx to trim their tummies. What about you?
Why control-top panties are bad for your back ... and your health
Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products
Spanx and other control-top panties are considered by many to be a godsend -- they pull in the paunch and instantly slim without have to do all that pesky dieting and exercising.
But according to some health experts in the UK, control-top panties aren't quite as miraculous as we'd like to believe. Here's why: Flabby midsections are often a sign of weak ab muscles--which are harmful to the back -- and unhealthy eating habits that could lead to diabetes, cancer and heart disease. So while slimming underpants will help you look good for that big event, they're just helping you ignore an uncomfortable and potentially deadly problem -- your weight.
Hmm. A good point. Still, I think donning a pair for that high school reunion isn't the end of the world. Your thoughts?
Fit Beauty: Lose those last 10 pounds with your clothes
Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products
Is there anything more frustrating than making a real effort to lose a certain amount of weight before a big event, like a wedding or class reunion, only to come up short when the big day rolls around? But you're out of time -- what can you do? Let me tell you -- the right clothes can make all the difference. You've probably heard of Spanx and Assets, which are great. Hey, if it's good enough for celebrities on the red carpet, it's good enough for me. However, a new line of clothing has come out, and it has what you need built right in -- ShapeFX.
ShapeFX has all kinds of slimming items designed to "make the body you have look like the body you want." They offer shaper pieces to wear underneath (they even have Shaper Shorts with a Butt Lifter!), but they also have dresses, pants, tops ... pretty much anything you would ever want to wear. And every piece has uses at least one of three approaches to slimming you down and hiding flaws: control, fabrication, and design.
Spanx for the slim down
I'm off to a wedding today and haven't yet decided if I'll wear my Spanx or not. I'm tempted to hold my not-so-perfect tummy in place with these body-shaping girdle-like undies that claim to comfortably hold every speck of skin in its proper place -- while cutting me down a size or two and erasing all pantylines -- but I might just go familiar and wear my trusty Hanes. I'm just not sure if I want to yank on these form-fitting underwear or slip easily into my usual wear and call it a day.Think you and Spanx might be a good fit? Check out these revolutionary undergarments -- hosiery, tights, body shapers, bras, panties, and other slimming apparel -- created by Sara Blakely after she cut the feet out of her pantyhose one night so she could wear white pants and open-toed shoes. Presto! Her idea was born. Pantyhose without feet inspired her whole collection and landed this former salesgirl into entrepreneurial stardom. Seven years after her invention made it big, Blakely is raking in $150 million in retail sales and has 55 employees, 100 different styles of Spanx, four patents, and ASSETS -- a new brand at Target.

How to slim down instantly for holiday parties
But if that fails, you might want to consider investing in a pair of slimming panties like Spanx. According to this article from the Daily Mail, they can slim you down up to two dress sizes, which will make fitting into that dress easy as pie. And you won't need to worry so much about sucking in that stomach if or when the hot guy from your office glances your way. Celebrities around the world have already discovered this secret -- Sienna Miller, Valerie Bertinelli and Katie Holmes have each been spotted using them.
What do you think? Are they an easy way to slim down? Are they horrendously uncomfortable?
How much weight has Valerie really lost?
US Magazine thinks they're on to her secret -- Spanx, those body-shaping spandex things that you wear under your outfits. I think I know another secret to why she looks awful in the bathing suit photo -- it's taken at a really unflattering angle with unflattering light. Remember the Tyra Banks affair? Maybe it's time we stop being so quick to label someone as fat and realize that we are all horribly unphotogenic at times. Don't you think?

Q. Hi Fitz. I am a 23-year-old female and I struggle with my legs. My issue is the upper area: thighs, hamstrings and glutes. I have a desk job and sit most of the day, but I go to the gym every evening right after work. I read tons about fitness and have tried everything. It just seems as though my glutes and thighs never tone. I do cardio (run & elliptical) three days a week and I weight train two days a week alternating muscles groups: upper body with lower body. I eat well, five small healthy meals a day. Please help. Jasmine
A. Hey Jasmine. Sorry you're struggling. Sounds like you're on the right track, but we can change things up a bit to get you closer to where you'd like to be physically. First of all, I'd like to change the type of cardio you're doing. I absolutely love running and the elliptical trainer, but those activities don't really make the best use of the power in your glutes and thighs. Start engaging in activities that take your legs through a large range of motion and utilize their power. Kickboxing, climbing stadium bleachers, and mountain biking are great choices. These activities require you to lift your legs, extend/flex at the hips and knees and create both endurance and strength in the areas your eager to enhance. Make sense? This way you'll be burning major calories and creating strong hard thigh muscles simultaneously.
Continue a well rounded strength training routine, but add some extra moves to target those glutes and thighs. Walking lunges and squat jumps (squat real low, jump real high) are my favorites. Make these changes, Jasmine, and you'll start seeing the results you've been dreaming about. Keep me posted!
