I didn't even realize I was tired, but this warm, sunny weather has given me such a jolt of energy, I can see now that I was really dragging those last few weeks of winter. In our busy lives, energy can be a limited resource. Between jobs, families, obligations and stress, poor eating and exercise habits, and not enough sleep, it's easy to find yourself run down before your day has run out.

CNN has 10 fresh, new, and interesting ways to boost your energy. If you're finding yourself falling into that 3 P.M. slump or just wish that you had more get-up-and-go, these are some simple tips to try. They include:

  • Expose yourself to more natural light sources to reset your natural circadian rhythms.
  • Eat more protein.
  • Do a good deed.
  • Try white tea.
  • Try acupuncture or Reiki.
  • Turn off your technology.
  • Focus on cleaning up your sleep habits.

When a slump comes on

I wouldn't yet call it a slump, but my motivation for exercise is waning a bit. I think it's connected to the early- morning rising I've been doing for a few months. I've been hopping out of bed at 5:30 AM each week day to run and such before all the people in my house are awake. I really like the jump I get on the day. But I think it's wearing on me. I know this because I'm sleeping later and later and cutting down on the time I have to accomplish my workouts. Maybe I need to ditch the morning thing for a while. Maybe I just need a kick-start. Something like what follows.

  • Maybe I need to train for something, like a 5K or a 15K, something to keep me focused and goal-oriented.

  • Maybe I need to keep records and chart my daily accomplishments. This way, I can challenge myself to do more, to do better, or to just keep plugging away.

  • Maybe I need to create a personal "reasons list." You know, a list of why I exercise: Too stay healthy, to fit into my clothes, to show my kids I'm dedicated to physical fitness. This might keep my head in the game.

  • Maybe I need new running shoes. I love shoes.

  • Maybe I need to switch up my tunes. Music drives me. I've been listening to the same songs on my MP3 player for a long time now. Perhaps it's time for a change.

  • Maybe I need a reward. If I get that tummy tuck I keep mentioning, I'll have all the reward I'll need. If I don't get it, maybe a pedicure will do.

  • Maybe I need a break. If I get that tummy tuck I keep mentioning, I'll have a nice long break. If I don't get it, maybe taking a day off here and there will recharge my batteries.

What do you do to keep your slumps at bay?

Daily Fit Tip: Eat the right lunch

Although fruit is healthy it may not always be the best thing for you when it comes to snacking and your lunch at work. Eating a meal or snack of mostly carbs will give you a hefty boost of energy right away, but it will also fade quickly and leave you feeling fatigued and drained. Eating protein and a little fat at meals along with a few carbs will slow down the digestion and even out the energy boost for a more productive and better feeling afternoon. Good choices include veggies and fish (or chicken) for lunch, and maybe an apple with cheese for a snack.

A fool-proof plan to fight fatigue

Who isn't tired these days? I must read something about fatigue and energy on an almost daily basis, and although I have been better lately about getting enough sleep there are still those days where it just doesn't seem like it was enough.

But I found this article that touts itself as "a fool-proof plan" to fight fatigue and have more energy. Much of it is good sound advice that we've all heard before, like getting up at the same time each day and limiting carb intake. But a few things did surprise me, one of which was the advice to skip the coffee first thing in the morning, and instead have it later in the day -- like in the afternoon, when you really need it. Apparently caffiene works by blocking a sleep inducing chemical called adenosine that builds up as the day goes on, and by the time you hit your afternoon slump whatever java you had that morning has completely worn off.

So, thinking about this I don't think I can skip the morning cup, no way. But I can always add in an afternoon one!

The keys to getting energy, and keeping it!

It's so easy, and so common, to feel run down and fatigued midway through the day. But instead of chugging coffee and Red Bull all afternoon, try some of these simple tips to stay energized:
  • Know your own energy cycle. And then, of course, plan accordingly by doing challenging tasks when you feel the brightest, and routine ones when you're more mellow.
  • Take care of yourself, and know what you need. Give yourself what you need, whether it's an early lunch or a walk around the block mid-afternoon. Do whatever you can to make it happen.
  • Get enough sleep!
  • Avoid stress when possible, and when it isn't do what you can to minimize it. Stress is one of the fastest ways to drain all of your energy.
  • Get regular exercise
  • Eat breakfast.
  • Eat something every three hours.
  • Include some protein at every meal.
  • Limit sugar, caffeine, and alcohol.
And if no matter what you try you're still having problems then it may be time to consult with your doctor. Some physical conditions such as sleep apnea, hypoglycemia, heart problems, etc, can be very serious and cause feelings of low energy and fatigue.
