Kilts - Guys, Do You Have The Calves To Sport a Skirt?
Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment
Kilts aren't exactly a mainstream clothing choice nowadays. But, Twilight's Cam Gigandet was recently spotted wearing a kilt and, frankly, I think he looks pretty hot. I'm not alone in thinking that, either. Most of the comments People readers left at this site are positive, too. But to sport a kilt, a guy has got to have some pretty rocking calf muscles ... not to mention guts. Designer Marc Jacobs says that wearing kilts makes him happy and that he "just can't stop wearing them." And just think of the movie, Braveheart -- if anyone can look hot in a kilt, it's Mel Gibson.
Men's Fitness has some great exercises to help get your calf muscles in great shape:
- The Siff Squat
- Calf Raises
- The Justice Routine (American Gladiator, Winston Justice's routine which includes several calf exercises.)
Dutch soccer players chose skirts over shorts
In the Netherlands, women's soccer just got a bit more glamorous. An Amateur team has received approval to ditch traditional shorts from their uniform and instead play in skirts, according to this article. It's not the first time such a request has been made by regulating officials, but it's the first time it's been approved. Of the decision to switch to skirts, team captain Rinske Temming says, "We think they are far more elegant than the traditional shorts and furthermore they are more comfortable because the shorts are made for men."
There's one catch though -- shorts must be worn underneath the skirts, but 'hot pants' (I'm guessing these are really tight stretchy shorts) are acceptable.
I've mentioned before that I personally didn't like the idea of running in skirts, but what do you think?
Your Turn: Ladies, would you work out in a skirt?
I have a closet full of fitness gear, but I don't waver much from my favrouite core pieces: A pair of lululemon capris or full-length pants (depending on the weather), a form-fitting sports bra, a comfy-but-not-baggy tank and some cushioning sports socks. What I wear to the gym certainly isn't cutting-edge fashion, but it's always comfortable and practical.
So it always kind of surprises me when I see fitness outfits with skirts. A few people at my gym wear them, and I see them all the time in fitness magazines. Personally, I would never wear a skirt to work out, unless I was playing tennis (and even then, I would be afraid of giving the whole world a show when I bent over to pick up my ball ... ) Don't get me wrong -- I think running skirts are cute, but I feel more comfortable in pants. Especially running -- I'd be worried about chafed thighs in a skirt.

Don't be a fashion victim: 5 sins everyone should avoid
When it comes to fashion, not every trend or style is for everyone. Part of being fashionable is knowing what looks good on you, being willing to wear the correct size and working what you've got with confidence. Having said that, there are some looks that really don't look good on anyone.
One fashion don't that I really can't stand is the "muffin top", which Martha Edwards recently talked about banishing forever. I think what bugs me so much about it is that most of the people I see rocking the muffin top do so needlessly. It's more about clothing size than weight, as even a tiny size 2 runs the risk of developing Dunlap Syndrome if they insist on squeezing into size 0 jeans and wearing a too-short t-shirt to finish off their ensemble.
Five other major don'ts include:
- Jean on Jean: Lovingly and hilariously referred to as the "Canadian Tuxedo" in my homeland, this fashion sin is especially terrible when the demin colors don't match.
- Sunglasses Indoors: It's unnecessary and makes you come across as either shady or pretentious. Or both.
- Sneakers with skirts: As the article points out, the only acceptable reason for this is if you're walking to work and are going to change when you get to the office. Otherwise, there are lots of more appropriate yet comfy options.
- Blatant Cleavage: There is a difference between sexy and sleazy and a time and place for everything (but in this case, never at work if at all possible). Every woman needs to figure out for herself how much boob is too much, although if your shirt is so low that you're running the risk of a nipple slip, you've probably gone too far.
- Panty Lines: Almost every woman has been guilty of this fashion sin. To avoid panty lines, wear clothes that fit (too-tight pants mean your undies will show through), try a thong or seamless underwear or, if you're comfortable with it, go commando.
Are there any fashion don'ts that you absolutely can't stand?
