Help your kids excel at sports
Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements
My son loves playing sports. There was a lull between baseball and soccer season this year. By the time soccer season rolled around, he was practically bouncing with excitement. He had really missed the fun and camaraderie of weekly practices and games. But not all kids love team sports as much as my son ... and that's OK. Any activity that they enjoy is beneficial for their health and good for their social skills. I'm not a believer in pushing kids into activities they don't want to participate in. But making the sport more fun and encouraging your child can be a great thing ... for both of you.
My son and I have a habit of practicing the soccer drills he learns in practice in our backyard. We also go down to a local soccer field and I blast kicks at him so he can work on his goalie skills, then he takes a turn aiming for different areas of the net to improve his ability. (Admittedly, I don't present much of a challenge as a goalie.)
Sure, you're fit, but how's your agility?
I recently came across this agility workout at Women's Health, which got me thinking about the role agility plays in everyday life. If you have kids or dogs and run around with them, you know how beneficial it is to be able to stop on a dime and switch direction. And, it goes without saying that if you compete in sports, agility is a must. But what about the rest of the time?Agility comes in handy in a million daily situations. You're walking through the office and see that open drawer at the last second -- with good agility, you'll avoid it without knocking yourself over. Or at home, in the kitchen, you pull something hot out of the oven, turn around, and ... there's your cat, right under your feet. If you're agile, you can avoid hurting Fluffy and still get dinner to the table.
Check out the exercises Women's Health suggests for agility -- they can all be done in your home. Additionally, consider jumping rope. If that's easy for you, do some fancy footwork between jumps. You'll be super-graceful (and in great shape) in no time!

I recently had the opportunity to spend time with Shane "Scooter" Christensen of the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters. Now, when handed the opportunity to pick the brain of a Globetrotter....I had to learn some skills! Cause quite frankly, when it comes to basketball....I have none. Well, I had none until I met Scooter. Now I know how to dunk.
