Skullcandy

Fitness, Reviews & Products

Skullcandy is a brand-name in music listening devices, including headphones, earbuds, MP3 players, hands-free devices and more. Founded in 2003, the highly-successful Skullcandy company was founded on the principle of creating portable audio equipment suited to an active, athletic lifestyle, with a particular emphasis on sports like snowboarding and skateboarding.

Skullcandy's products are aimed at action sport enthusiasts but have reached a much wider demographic -- appealing to sporty and non-sporty types alike.

Sold in over 40 countries worldwide, Skullcandy products are known for their unique, hip hop-inspired design and their versatility throughout a variety of activities.

Skullcandy headphones and ear buds are particularly popular, having been dubbed the "world's coolest ear bud" by CNN Money. Those who would like to purchase Skullcandy headphones have three options -- in ear, on ear and over ear to accommodate the listener's needs.

Matthew McConaughey Land Paddles, Would You?

Nearly any activity looks like fun when mostly-shirtless Matthew McConaughey is doing it. Land paddling is no exception. It is essentially stand up paddle surfing on (you guessed it) land, using a longboard and a big stick that looks like you could knock people out of the way if you were so inclined. But the stick isn't meant for assaulting pedestrians, it's to propel you along waves of asphalt. Like skateboarding, it can be used to simply get around, or to cross train, as Matthew has been seen doing around the streets of Los Angeles. It engages your core muscles and arms to keep you stable, and supposedly burns about 400 calories an hour. I've yet to see one on the streets of New York City, but in Hawaii they're even used in some exercise classes. With a price tag of nearly $250 for board and stick from Kahuna Creations, it's tough to say if this sport will migrate much beyond Malibu and beach towns.

Have you seen people land paddling? Are you into it?

Freeline Skates - A Fun Way to Get Fit

Fitness

Surfing and snowboarding are fantastic workouts, but they have some specific requirements -- namely, waves and snow. And sure, you can always skateboard, but what if you're ready for a new challenge? You just might want to look into Freeline Skates.

freeline skatesThe creators of Freeline Skates are serious about sports like these -- sports that get them "charged up." The website says, "Freeline Skates are a testament to the awesome potential of each of us." Not only are they a fun way to get your adrenaline pumping, but they also do a fantastic job of working your inner thighs and ankles.

What's cool is that these skates have lots of possibilities, as shown on the site's video page. Even though they incorporate many of the moves you'd use in the sports mentioned above, they're definitely unique.

Tony Hawk - More Skateboarders Than Little Leaguers

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Tony HawkRisk of injury aside, I would be thrilled if my kids end up skateboarders. A pack of kids spending hours on their skateboards means physical fitness, developing balance, feeling a sense of accomplishment at new tricks. It's the polar opposite of sitting on the couch digging into a bag of Funyuns.

Another reason is professional skateboarding legend Tony Hawk. He's in his 40s now but still improving his moves as he deepens worldwide respect for the sport. Hawk is the real deal, Forbes named him the third most-influential athlete in America. Third ... after Tiger and Lance. The not-for-profit Tony Hawk Foundation builds skate parks in low-income communities -- a true need if you consider there's 13 million skaters and fewer than 3,000 skate parks. Support for the sport is looking up -- adults who spent plenty of time on a skateboard are entering community and corporate positions of power.

Consider this fact: In a 27east interview this past summer, Hawk pointed out there are more kid skateboarders than Little Leaguers. Kids find skating especially appealing because there's an immediacy to participation, plenty of adrenaline and constant action. No yawning in right field waiting for a fly ball. It's an individual sport requiring no formal practices/games. You rely on yourself. A few more reasons why there's a skateboard in our garage and plenty of wood to set up jumps.
