Full House star tackles baby weight

First she tackled life as a child actor -- she played Stephanie Tanner on Full House, remember that? -- and then she tackled a crystal meth addiction. Now, Jodie Sweetin is on to another big undertaking: Losing weight.

It's baby weight the actress is trying to shed, and she's doing a pretty good job of whittling it away. It's only been two months since daughter Zoie was born and already Sweetin has just 10 pounds she wants to drop -- she's already lost 15. How is she doing it?

"I'm still working very hard and dressing strategically," says the new mom. "I'm doing NutriSystem, and they have been phenomenal." Sweetin also works out with a trainer at least twice a week.

Check her out now. A little hard work really does pay off.

Working in the Workouts: Being reasonable about weight

Filed under: Emotional Health, Diet and Weight Loss, Working In the Workouts

Last week I wrote about my goal to drop six sticky pounds. And a reader asked why, suggesting the scale is not the sole determinant of good health. This is certainly true. But my experience is this: Weight gain begets weight gain and pretty soon you can find yourself heavier than your heart valves, vanity and wardrobe are comfortable with. And I believe vanity, within reason, is an important part of our emotional health. Maybe not as important as clear arteries or wellness in general, but important nonetheless.

Here's some perspective: I'm essentially near the top of what's considered a healthy weight for my stature. That means I have no leeway for vacations or Thanksgiving or GNO. I like leeway. And I like nipping things in the bud before they're a problem. Or before I can't squeeze into my bathing suit to join my daughter in swim class. That's my strategy, and it's worked for me so far.

I think it can work for any parent struggling to keep tabs on their health and find time to exercise. It's all about staying on top of things as much as possible because none of us has room for big problems in our lives. It's about being reasonable. Losing six pounds is a whole lot easier than losing 60. Sixty pounds is a lot. Trust me. I just pushed that amount around in a double stroller yesterday as a way of getting a workout in while babysitting my daughter's best friend before my in-laws arrived in town.

Actress Kristen Johnston drops 60 pounds

I last saw actress Kristen Johnston on ER -- she played the tough nurse manager Eve Peyton for a few episodes -- and I remember realizing what a large woman she is. She's six feet tall, after all. That's just plain big. But she looked a bit overweight too. Apparently, she was.

Johnston has reportedly shed 60 pounds in the past year and a half. You may say the 40-year-old Johnston looks a bit too skinny -- check out this photo and see what you think -- but here's what she has to say about it: "When actresses lose weight, people think they are anorexic. It is important to me to say that this is not the case here."

Guess how many pounds of bugs you eat each year!

Oh man. This is one of those statistics that makes you either swear off eating all together or throw your hands up in the air in disgust. I mean seriously. Who is the guy with the weird job which allows him to research these odd little details? I'd hate to be his wife, as he comes home each night with all the yucky tidbits in life that I really never want to know.

I learned about my bug consumption while flipping through the June 2008 edition of Women's Health magazine. Seems more the type of scoop you'd find in Maxim, but no ... it was my beloved Women's Health that broke the news.

Q. Hi Fitz, I am a person with T-12 incomplete Paraplegia. I'm interested in learning about some decent ab workouts (including obliques) that I could do at the gym or at home. Just to provide you with a little more information, my T-12 vertebrae are connected by rods. I'd really appreciate some guidance. Thanks! Jon

A. Hello Jon, What a wonderful question! I really feel there's a gaping hole in the fitness industry which needs to address fitness training for people dealing with injuries and/or disabilities. You are the perfect example of that. A guy who's had a spinal injury, but still strives for better fitness beyond rehab facilities. I love it. I also love the spinal cord, and appreciate the sensitivity of it. Long ago, while I was earning my Master's Degree in Exercise and Sports Sciences at the University of Florida, I took a magnificent course on the spine from a brilliant woman, Dr. Christine Stopka, Professor of Adapted Physical Activity & Medical Terminology. She taught me to respect the spine first, and then went on from there. A major aspect of the course focused on educating her students about the things people with disabilities could do. She spent far more time on the could dos than the can't dos. That's one of the most important things I took away with me. I thought your question deserved the most expert advice, so I passed it on to her.

Take if off with trainer Jillian Michaels

BIggest Loser trainer Jillian Micheals, once a chubby girl who transformed her body and her life, has just the plan for shedding a few pounds prior to that perfect party, wedding, or class reunion.

Cut the carbs, says Michaels. Not permanently -- just two days before the big event. Ditch the grains, rice, pasta, cereal, sugar (even fruit sugar) and you'll look stunning and feel fabulous.

An idea for more long-term weight loss: Make a list of reasons why you want to lose weight and get into shape. Be realistic -- don't plan to run a marathon right off the bat -- and use your list to guide your efforts. Take responsibility, says Michaels. Choose your actions wisely. And your actions will influence your results.

Now get to work -- Jillian continues to pave the way right here, at AOL's AmericaTakes It Off location.

Lisa Marie Presley wins big fat apology

Posted: May 3rd 2008 8:00AM by Jacki Donaldson

Is an apology really an apology when it's mandated? I don't think so, given the fact that it's not really rooted in sincerity. Maybe it's better than nothing, though.

Britain's Daily Mail newspaper was made to apologize to the daughter of Elvis after printing last month that Presley, like her late father, was packing on the pounds with a poor diet. But Presley wasn't "growing just like her dad," as the paper claimed. She was growing because of the baby in her belly. So Presley sued for libel. And the paper published an apology. It went like this:

On March 4 we published a photograph of Lisa Marie Presley while she was dining with friends. We suggested she might have an unhealthy appetite similar to her late father. We now accept that the suggestion is untrue and apologize to Ms. Presley for any distress caused.

Presley, 40, is expecting her third child this Fall.

Weight Loss Quick Tip: Change 5 meals a week

An easy way to lose weight is to include more fruits and vegetables in your diet. Produce is famous for jamming massive amounts of vitamins, nutrients and fiber into very few calories. With most produce, you can consume lots of food for a very low caloric price. More bang for your buck that is!

I ask my personal training clients to try to include at least five meals per week consisting of pure produce. No meat. No grains. Most folks eat at least 21 meals per week, so this five meal plan doesn't deter anyone from getting enough protein. What it does do though, is get them to try new fruits and learn new ways to turn veggies into a meal.

Another benefit to this effort is that by keeping a few meals to just produce, you will more than likely be cutting quite a bit of calories out of the day. Over time, the more you rely on fruits and vegetables for snacks and meals, the more likely you'll be to achieve and maintain your ideal weight.

Q. Hey Fitz. I'm heading out for a week's vacation on a cruise ship next month, and worried that once again I'll gain almost ten pounds while gone. That's what I've done the last few times I've gone on a cruise. How can I get around it? There is awesome food everywhere! Susan.

A. Susan, Susan, Susan. I'm shaking my head. The deal with vacations, cruises especially, is that they're a time for you to relax, get away from the daily grind and have some fun. Pigging out and gorging are simply not what you should be focusing on...wherever you are! Yes, there is a lot of tasty food on cruise ships. There is also a lot of yummy things available at your local grocery store every single day! That doesn't' mean you should run through the aisles like a lunatic shoving everything you can get your hands on into your mouth. Just because food is THERE, just because food is FREE, doesn't mean you have to eat it.

Daily Fit Tip: Don't chuck the fat photo -- yet

Posted: Apr 22nd 2008 5:34AM by Martha Edwards
Filed under: Daily Fit Tip

Any of us who've carried a few extra pounds have inevitably had that ah-ha moment. You know, the one where you look at a photo from your past vacation or family event and think to yourself, omigod, is that me? Is that what I look like? I look so ... fat ... ! The thing is, we see each other every day in the mirror, and so we sometimes don't notice an extra few pounds here and there. Until, that is, we see ourselves from far away, from another point of view.

Truth be told, these moments of realization are hard. But they're also necessary -- we need to face the facts to make changes in our lives. So next time you find a fat photo, don't burn it, bury it in the garden or hide it away. Keep in it plain view--perhaps even on your fridge?--as a reminder to make better decisions.

And trust me--with enough dedication, it won't be long before you can chuck the fat photo and replace it with a fit photo, one that you can truly be proud of.

This time, Biggest Loser is a woman

A woman had never been crowned The Biggest Loser before last night when Ali Vincent won the $250,000 grand prize for shedding a whopping 112 pounds, the most ever for a female contestant in Biggest Loser history.

Vincent, a 32-year-old hair stylist from Mesa, Arizona who nows weighs 122 pounds, first arrived on the Biggest Loser: Couples ranch with her mom Bette-Sue Burkland -- mom was voted off the show a while back but still lost 86 pounds -- and impressed both her competitors and TV viewers with her dramatic transformation.

Why did she take a leave of absence from her every-day life to work her butt off in front of a national audience? "I want to be strong and healthy and I want to look good and I want to set a good example," she says.

Vincent's inspiring story will be featured in PEOPLE magazine, available on Friday.

How much protein do you need?

We've all accepted the fact that we need protein. But do you know specifically how much protein you need to be getting as part of a nutritious diet? If you're anything like me, you might not be getting enough. I'll be honest here--I'm not a protein person. I prefer carbs, veggies and fruits to anything else out there, and seeing as I'm not much of a meat eater, it's sometimes a struggle to get my fair share. But I do ok--or at least I though so.

I recently paid attention to what the recommended daily intake of protein is for people depending on their weight. Here's a quick breakdown (to find out your own, just multiply your weight in lbs by .36:)
  • If you weigh 100 lbs, you need 36g
  • If you weigh 120 lbs, you need 43.2g
  • If you weigh 140 lbs, you need 50.4g
  • If you weigh 160 lbs, you need 57.6g
  • If you weigh 180 lbs, you need 64.8g
That seems like an awful lot, doesn't it? But there's good news--protein isn't only in meat. You can find it in a variety of dairy products, not to mention nuts, beans, lentils and vegetables.

How do you get your protein?

Keeping pounds off for good

There's really no big secret to losing weight and keeping it off. Burn more calories than you consume and you'll see what I mean. Eating a healthy diet, exercising well, minimizing stress, and getting enough sleep will help your cause. So will another factor, according to this LA Times article.

The Internet may help you lose weight -- you're using the Internet right now, after all, and look at the wealth of diet and weight loss information That's Fit has to offer. But communicating with real people is just as important.

According to a 30-month multi-center study conducted at Duke University Medical Center and three other research institutions, participants in a personal-contact support group gained back 8.8 pounds of the 18.7 they lost. Those in an Internet support group and control group regained 11.4 and 12.1 pounds.

These maintenance results might be modest. But the research supports what has been previously established -- that continued support from people who help with the weight loss process is associated with keeping weight off.
