I love multitasking! Any opportunity I get to kill two or more birds with one stone gets me giddy. I'm a busy woman with far too much to do, and when things get done in an efficient and pleasing way...I feel elated. Where am I going with this, you ask? Women's Health recently published this Park Workout and I thought you may need to see it as well.

If you have kids, I'm guessing there is a 99.9% chance that they like to run around and play at the playground. If this is true, then I'm talking to you. Let your kids and their buddies have their fun while you get a workout. No use sitting on that park bench anymore....use it for a glute training! Utilize the swings, monkey bars, and more.

Workout at the playground

blue swingAs of tomorrow, my son will be 11-years-old. Ack! (Why does 11 sound so much older than 10?) In any case, he's old enough that when we visit the playground, he doesn't need my assistance. In fact, he'd much rather I sit quietly by -- there if he wants to show me some cool new stunt, but not in his way as he's making new friends.

Typically, I just bring a book and use playground time to unwind a bit. But maybe I'll use the time to be a bit more active now. Women's Health Magazine has four great exercises you can do at the playground:
  • Use the swings to work your glutes, hamstrings, and quads.
  • Monkey-ups work your biceps, core, and back.
  • The Bench Jump is a great cardio move that works your core, glutes, hamstrings, and quads.
  • A swing makes this modified push-up an effective shoulder, bicep, back, core, and chest workout.

Working in the Workouts: Playgrounds

It's spring and in my Northern Virginia neighborhood that means kids and parents are hitting the playgrounds again. Kids are flocking to swings and slides while parents, mostly moms, sit on benches and gossip, read or do some crafty thing with their hands. Well, here's a novel idea. Get up and get moving with your kids because it's a good chance to get some exercise.

My daughter often yells, "Your turn, Mommy!" after her spins on the slides. Climbing the steps and going down the slide over and over has got to be worth something. Then she runs over to the swings and I run after her. Then I push her hard because she wants to go "super high." At one of the bigger, more elaborate playgrounds there's a zip cord. And it's a big hit. My little one isn't quite big enough or strong enough to do it herself, so I prop her up on one arm and run back and forth with her holding on. Believe me, it's a workout.

So put away the phone, reading material and knitting and shut your trap and get moving next time you take a trip to the playground with your kids. You'll be the "cool mom" in your kids' eyes and your body will thank you.

Working in the Workouts: Not HIIT, but better?

owen and mommyEach week, Debbie will share her goals, challenges, successes and tips on how to fit in fitness when caring for a rambunctious toddler.

A while back, I had written that I was toying with the idea of HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) training, but was concerned I was not in good enough shape for it.

While I still don't think I have the stamina, a new study validates a rest period between workouts, showing that resting in-between actually burns more fat than a continuous workout.

OK, take a breath.

I gotta say, man, am I daft. Or sleep-deprived. Or both.

Here I am, not only trying to make exercise a priority, but trying to fit it in around Owen's schedule. And writing about it. So you'd think I would be using some sort of creativity to reach these goals.

You know one of my biggest complaints has been that Owen doesn't really sit still in the stroller long enough for me to get a good walk. So what did I do? I didn't walk with him.

This seriously cut down the amount of time I spent being active, since I spend most of my time with Owen. But since I couldn't make him miserable by insisting he sit in the stroller for a lengthy walk, what was I to do?
