Apple Cider - how many calories?

Now that the leaves have turned (and somehow all wound up in my yard), there are few things more appealing to me than having a warm drink and a meal with friends in a cozy pub or coffee shop with a fire place. Normally, I'd consider spending my weekends by the water or out in the fresh mountain air, but that's not really an option in November when you live in Canada -- unless you're the super outdoorsy type (I'm not).

So, for those of us who don't like cold weather, the outdoors is out this time of year, except in small doses. I'll take a fireplace any day. Let the wind howl away, we're warm and happy and having fun inside.
After a day of raking leaves or shopping or wandering around the autumn streets, a cup of steaming hot apple cider really hits the spot, don't you think? But surely apple cider is better for you than some of the other winter offerings, most of which are made primarily of cream and sugar. What do you think?
How Many Calories ... in a Pint of Beer?
One of my favourite summer indulgences is a pint of cold beer on the patio on a hot summer's day. See, it's so refreshing, and when enjoyed with friends, it's a fun way to get together. Problem is, when you're having so much fun, one pint can turn into two, three or even more (provided you're not driving, of course!)
Calorie-wise, I know that beer is a better choice than, say, a margarita. And I know that a bottle of beer usually isn't too high in calories, depending on the beer you choose. But what about pints? Are they a good drink choice or a calorie disaster? What do you think?

After a workout, beer is best, not water
Heading over to happy hour at your local pub after a good workout seems counterproductive, but it just might be the key to re-hydrating you after a good sweat session. That's right, researchers out of Spain have found that a pint of beer after a workout does a better job of re-hydrating your body than a glass of water could.
Do you find these results surprising? I do -- I always thought that beer was de-hydrating, not re-hydrating. Still, as long as you follow a healthy diet, I'm sure it couldn't hurt to grab a cold one after a workout. What do you think?
