Has nutrition gone to the dogs? Homemade dog food

I'm all about helping my family follow a healthy diet, and by family, I mean everyone, including my dogs. I make an effort to buy a high quality dog food, do the vet visits as needed, and keep them free from fleas and heartworms. I like to treat them as well, and I often bring home treats from the neighborhood doggy bakery, and have been known to bake up some doggy biscuits for special occasions.

However, when it comes to my dogs' daily meals, I think I have to draw the line at preparing it myself. I came across a section in All Recipes where they list a number of different recipes for homemade pet food, such as Doggy Meatloaf with Vegetables and Poochie Meat Cakes (both of which take longer to prepare and bake than many of the things I make for the humans in my family).

What do you think? Does homemade dog food cross the line, or is it a great option for pet owners who wish to have more input in their dogs nutrition?

(If you do opt to make a change in your pet's diet, please discuss it with your vet to ensure your furry friend will receive the proper nutrition!)

Fit pets: food that virtually eliminates dog poop

One of the major drawbacks to having a dog (especially a large dog) is undoubtedly the clean-up. There's nothing I hated more than roaming through my parents' yard, trying to find all the deposits -- it's one of the main reasons I'm currently not a dog owner.

But those days may be over. A Dutch company claims to have created pet food that leaves almost no waste -- as 90% of it is apparently absorbed into the dog's body. The remaining 10% still comes out the other end, but it's a smell-free dry pellet that you can pick up with a tissue. Plus, the new food makes it possible for dogs to eat only once or twice a day, according to the dog's individual need. And yes, apparently the dog will only need to -- you know -- once a day, too (based on regular consumption).

The food is called Energique, and the developers are making and selling it as fast as they can -- but is it safe? Could it possibly be giving your pet all the nutrition it needs to stay healthy?

Apparently the food is made entirely from meat -- unlike normal dog food which is only 15% meat (the rest is comprised of cereal crops and water). Because, if they weren't domesticated, dogs would only eat meat, and the makers of Energique claim that this is actually a more-natural alternative.

Would you give it to your dog?

Melamine from tainted pet food won't hurt humans

As if the recent pet food recalls one after another threatening the health of our pets wasn't stressful enough, those reports were quickly followed by news that the responsible contaminating ingredients had gotten into the human food supply through hogs and chickens. But finally some good news: although the chemical melamine has been found in the feed of some animals, none has been found in the meat supply intended for humans. And in addition, even if small amounts of melamine were consumed experts don't believe it would pose any real health threat to humans.

So, a tentative sigh of relief. For at least one angle of this horrible mess anyway.

Pet food recall expanding like crazy

After watching the recall of Menu Foods' pet products from several brands in the last month, the situation continues to deteriorate. More pet food products have been added to the recall list in recent weeks, some dry foods have been added and there is a growing sense of madness with pet owners across the U.S.

At the root of all this is imported components from China like wheat gluten and rice protein. The quality control outside of the U.S. has always been an area of concern when I've bought products that I eat or drink, and this latest example only amplifies that, does it not?

Solution? I've used Innova dog food and Bil-Jac as well, which are generally made with U.S.-only ingredients and have received high marks from vets and animal experts alike. The Pet Connection website is the best resource for updates on this current pet food mess, so if you're concerned, check it out here.
