Jumpstart Your Fitness: By avoiding these 25 weight loss mistakes

Diet & Weight Loss

I don't think this needs much of an introduction -- it's a list of 25 common weight loss mistakes (some of which we make on almost a daily basis!). So read through it and see what small changes you can make to jumpstart your fitness and weight loss goals!
  • Having a defeatist attitude from the start. Ever heard about the law of attraction? If you think about failing you'll attract failure. You'll sabotage yourself before you even get started. On the flip side go around believing you're going to succeed? You will!
  • Starting something you can't see yourself sticking with forever. If you can't imagine doing it for the rest of your life, like a grapefruit diet or Atkins for example, then don't bother. It's about lifestyle choices, not quick fixes.
  • Starting something you hate from the start. You may be telling yourself "beauty is pain" and forcing yourself to push onward, but how long is that going to last? Find something you can really get behind and stick with for the long haul.
  • Weighing yourself too much. By getting on that scale everyday (or heaven forbid more than once a day) you're letting it rule your mood and control your day. That's just plain messed up. It's just a scale.
  • Not drinking enough water. Back to basics is usually a good rule, and this is one of those cases. Drinking enough water can do everything from give your more energy to help you shed puffiness, and it's free, has no calories, and is always available!

New ink makes tattoos less permanent

Diet & Weight Loss

Until somewhat recently getting a tattoo was like a rite of passage for those trying to affiliate themselves with certain subcultures. Lately though, getting inked has become a big part of mainstream pop culture with more and more people going under the needle. Tattoos have become so popular in fact, that there are even TV shows devoted entirely to the subject.

I imagine that in the past, when only real aficionados of the art were getting tattooed, the ease of removal probably wasn't high on the list of things to consider before heading to the local parlor. But things are different now that everyone and their grandmother are adorning their bodies with colorful names and symbols. Permanence isn't necessarily a good thing for those of us who rush out in a blaze of youthful exuberance and get inked just because it's cool.

I'm not saying that everyone gets tattoos just because they're "in" but there are definitely people like that out there who regret the enormous butterfly on their lower back, the barbed-wire armband that encircles their bicep or the pledge of eternal love to the person they're no longer dating. For these people, the fact that a new, easy-to-erase ink has been developed will be good news. While true enthusiasts will likely pass on the new ink, I imagine it could be popular with those who just want to try a tattoo on for size before committing for life.

Have you ever gotten a tattoo you regret? And for the tattoo fans out there, would you try the new, easy-to-remove ink?

The big event is over, but don't fall off the weight loss wagon!

Fitness

So you used a big event to motivate yourself to lose those last stubborn pounds, and whether it was a sleeveless dress for your friend's wedding or a vacation involving beaches and a swimsuit the whole deal has now come and gone and you're ready to relax.

What?! No!

Well relaxing is fine, as long as you don't relax yourself right out of that wonderful diet and fitness lifestyle that got you into this beautiful shape in the first place. If you're not careful you'll balloon right back to where you were, miserable and unhappy with yourself, giving up everything you've worked so hard for and perhaps worst of all finding yourself back at square one.

So stick to your guns, and remember that healthiness is a lifestyle choice, not a temporary fix. If you need some ideas on how to stay on track our friends at FitSugar have some good ones to get you started.

Permanent makeup is risky business

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health

Cosmetic medical procedures are becoming more and more commonplace everyday as technology advances, but there are still serious risks associated with even the simplest of procedures. Permanent makeup, which is basically just tattoos, is one that can easily have serious and devastating side effects. Studies have shown that certain shades of the tattoo ink used for permanent makeup cause allergic reactions in a significant number of patients, with redness, swelling, and even permanent bumps in the skin called granulomas resulting. The especially scary part is that it's possible to develop an allergy to the pigment at any time -- even in a tattoo you've had for years!

I for one would never want something permanent like this on my face, with or without the chance for nasty side effects, but for those who like the idea -- is it worth the risk?

Breaking bad habits

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Motivation

A huge part of losing weight, getting fit, and staying that way is learning to break your old bad habits. We may all know what we're supposed to be doing for a healthy lifestyle, but most of aren't following through -- not really anyway.

So start by sitting down with a notebook and jotting down some of the things that you know get in the way sometimes. When do you feel guilty? That's probably one. Next, analyze yourself and think of what might help you get past it next time it crops up: make a battle plan.

And last, hand pick some new good habits you're going to work on. Whether it's stuff you're already doing that you want to be better at, like eating breakfast every day, or something you haven't done yet at all but should, like starting a walking program, write it down and really work at doing it regularly. If you stick with it through the starting "rough patch" it will eventually become habit, and second nature.
