Pot belly

Diet & Weight Loss

With a growing number of overweight people, you're likely to see at least one pot belly on your morning commute.

A pot belly, or beer belly, is excessive fat in the center of the abdomen which makes the belly round and protruding. While women can get a pot belly, they tend to be more prevalent in men. The biggest causes are overeating and a sedentary lifestyle.

The only way to lose a pot belly is to lose weight. You cannot spot train body parts, but crunches may help tone the stomach muscles. Additionally, you must burn more calories than you consume each day, which is easier if you follow a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet and include at least 30 to 60 minutes of vigorous exercise in your daily routine.

Even if you don't have an excessive amount of fat hanging over your jeans, but still want to slim your stomach, avoiding foods that contribute to bloating can help. Cut back on salt and eliminate gassy foods like broccoli, onions and cauliflower. Carbonated drinks (like soda), alcohol, fried foods and spicy meals can also lead to bloating.

If you don't have a pot belly, but want to tweak another body region try these tips from That's Fit:

Try some edamame, Italian style

Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements

edamame
My niece is an Environmental Science major in college right now. With all the new information she's learning, she recently decided to become a vegetarian because of the negative impact meat production has on the environment. Unfortunately, her new diet has consisted of pretty much nothing but pasta. She's subsequently feeling quite run down.

She recently came home for a weekend, and her mother and I put our heads together to come up with easy, healthful recipes that will better meet my niece's nutritional needs. My niece and sister spent most of the weekend in the kitchen, and my niece went back to school with freezer containers filled with healthful, balanced meals.

Several of the recipes they prepared contain edamame. Just a half cup of edamame has 10 grams of protein. Shape magazine has a recipe for Italian Edamame that sounds absolutely delicious. The edamame is paired with brown rice, herbs, and other veggies such as zucchini, red bell pepper, tomatoes, and onion. You've got to try it. And then check out Martha's post about other vegetarian sources of protein.

Egg-cellently healthy Frittata

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

frittataAn egg is an egg is an egg, right? That's what I thought until we started buying them from our CSA Farm: they are bigger, with huge yolks, and so full of flavor that it is hard to compare them to a store-bought egg. The farmer credits the grass in the chickens' diet, and if you've ever noticed the difference between grain-fed and grass-fed beef, you'll know this makes sense.

Because the eggs are so outrageously delicious -- not to mention a healthy source of protein -- we've been cooking with them more often, and we simply love this spinach frittata recipe.

So what makes this frittata so healthy?
  • goat cheese cuts down on the fat and improves digestibility
  • spinach -- the perfect leafy green, adding vitamins and minerals
  • onion fights cancer and boosts the immune system
  • sun-dried tomatoes provide lycopene and then some

Serve the frittata with a big, fresh, crisp and colorful salad of seasonal veggies and you've got one healthy dinner. Do you have a favorite frittata recipe?

Brush your coffee breath away

Nutrition & Supplements

Coffee breath isn't as bad as some breaths -- like onion and garlic breath, caused by odors that enter your lungs and bloodstream -- but it still can be bothersome to you and other folks too. Here's a simple fix, says the August 2008 Real Simple magazine: Brush your teeth and your tongue. Why this quick fix? Because this is where the odor-causing bacteria grow.

A breath mint is another coffee breath killer, but it will only work in the short-term. Consider it a hold-over until you can round up your toothbrush and paste. Can't get to a mint or the bathroom sink? In a pinch, you can fill your mouth with water and give it a good swish.

Hola! I just made some of my favorite party dip tonight for a get together tomorrow and thought I should share it with you. I make my Fat Free Mexican O-Layered Dip often and it's always a crowd pleaser. It only requires a few simple ingredients and is quick and easy to just throw together. Add some lean meat to it and you can enjoy it as a meal.

Have a looksy here at the recipe, give it a try and let me know what you think! I love great food, and have had great success substituting the fattening parts for equally tasty not so fattening parts. Adios!

Color me healthy: what hues you should have on your plate

Nutrition & Supplements

I would say that I'm much more into vibrant colours than I am drab shades of beige or gray. This goes not only for my home and clothes, by my meals too. I try to make sure to have lots of different colours of produce in my fridge and on my plate. Do you do the same?

Prevention Magazine notes these colours as some of the best to have on your plate:
  • Yellow/orange: Think mangoes and sweet potatoes, which can help prevent cancer
  • Green: Spinach and broccoli can help your vision
  • Purple: Blueberries and blackberries can help prevent the spread of tumors
  • Red: Tomatoes and watermelon contain lycopene, to prevent cancer and heart disease
  • White: Cauliflower, garlic and onions are all great for you.
So next time you're in the grocery store, look for some of these items.

Healthy Handful: five kitchen helpers I can't live without

Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements

As I was unpacking a toiletries bag from my third trip this past month, I had to smile when I found a bottle of cayenne pepper nestled between my facial cleanser and perfume. Since I never know what fare I'm going to find on the road (or in the skies), I'm a firm believer in traveling with some basic staples to help certain foods along. These are also the standard kitchen stand-by's that play a supporting, yet crucial, role in preparing the main stars of my kitchen, whether it's fruit or vegetable, fish or fowl, linguine or legumes. I was too hard-pressed to identify just five, so I've settled on five groupings -- partners that can quickly add pizzazz to any food palette needing some flair.
