Growing up, one of my favorite comfort foods was none other than macaroni and cheese. However, it usually comes with the burden of 20 grams of fat per serving. I eliminated the guilt, but not the flavor, by using low-fat milk, reduced fat cheese and a fiber-rich pasta, cutting the fat to four times less than your usual bowl. Once you try this healthier alternative, you'll never go back -- and neither will your kids!

Ingredients:

1 cup low-fat milk

1 cup low-fat cottage cheese

1 1/2 cups shredded reduced-fat cheddar cheese

1/4 tsp salt

1/8 tsp pepper

1 pound Barilla Plus multigrain elbow pasta

3 Tbs breadcrumbs

Chinese cuisine: The 5 best choices

Recently I told you about the five worst things you can order at a Chinese restaurant. But if you love a good Chinese feast, don't despair. I come bearing hope. There are healthy (well, healthier) options. According to eDiets, these are the five best things you can order at a Chinese restaurant:

  • Soup. Hot and sour, egg drop ... most Chinese soups are (relatively) low-cal and high in protein. But avoid the soups with noodles.
  • Veggies. Order any of the veggie dishes -- steamed veggies in particular are low in calories and are very filling.
  • Dim Sum, Steamed dumplings are a great choice, especially veggie or tofu dumplings.
  • Steamed anything. Steamed fish, chicken, tofu ... are you seeing a pattern here? Steamed is best.
  • Stir-fry. Order a stir-fry loaded with veggies and lean meats or tofu, and ask the chef to go easy on the oil.

Another tip: Order healthy green tea with your meal instead of soda or alcohol.

Eva Mendes eats crap, still looks good

She may be committed to fitness, but overall, she doesn't have the healthiest habits. Eva Mendes recently revealed that despite her svelte figure, she's not adamant about watching what she eats. Says the gorgeous starlet: "I'd shock you at how much I could eat. Any kind of dessert is fantastic. It's gross, but I also love cup noodles. I'll eat two at a time because the salt really does it for me. They're so cheap so they can't be that good for you, but they're yummy!"

Mendes, 34, adds that the only time she is careful about eating well and exercising is when she is filming: "f I have a shoot I'll work out more and watch what I eat, but if I don't I'll let myself go. I'm addicted to bread. I want it constantly so, right now, I'm letting myself have more of it but when I start my next movie I'll cut down."

Why does she rely on junk food? Mendes also admitted that she is a terrible cook -- so bad, in fact, that she's given up trying to prepare meals.

When my family heads our for Chinese food, one of the things we always end up ordering is a plate of noodles. It's mostly my influence -- they're my favourite. Being a flexitarian, I don't eat a lot of meat, so carbs are my go-to meal. Plus Chinese-style noodles are just plain tasty

Noodles with veggies and sauce is a typical dish for me. But I'm not blind to the fact that noodles are high in calories -- particularly when they're covered in a sweet sauce. But still, I'm wondering ... how bad can they be? What do you think?

When I went on a three-month trek around Thailand a few years ago, I assumed I would lose weight effortlessly because I wouldn't be filling up on my regular diet of carbs and convenience food. I'm not alone -- when it comes to food, we tend to assume that Asian cuisine is healthier than North American fare. After all, while our food tends to be high in fat, refined carbs and sugar and other processed ingredients, Asian food tends to be low in fat and high in veggies.

But how accurate are our assumptions about Asian cuisine? I'll tell you one thing -- I didn't lose weight on a diet of green curry with rice, pad thai and tom kha gai soup. In fact, I gained a couple. So I wonder ...

Get beautiful skin by...taking a bath in Ramen noodles?

We all want good skin, and we've all heard of countless different ways to go about getting it, but sitting in an enormous bowl of Ramen noodle soup? That's a new one.

A Japanese spa is offering just that: the opportunity to dip yourself in noodles to get a healthier glow. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending how you look at it!) it's not real noodles (just noodle-shaped spa treatments) but it is real broth. The pork-based broth contains collagen, hence the skin-enhancing benefits.

The treatment costs about $29 -- would you do it? I think I'll pass, and save my Ramen noodles for meals only.

Americanized Chinese is full of unhealthy stuff

Go to any town in North America and you're sure to find a Chinese restaurant with the same offerings: Stir-frys, fried rice, fried noodles, spring rolls ... the list goes on and on, and pretty much everything is battered, deep fried and loaded with salt. This is a far cry from traditional Chinese food, which is full of healthy stuff like veggies and tofu, but the unhealthy stuff is still wildly popular in the States and beyond.

Chinese food had been getting a lot of bad press as of late, and I think it's great to bring people's attention to the fact that a single dish usually has twice your daily recommended serving of sodium and fat.

So what can you do if you find yourself out at your local Chinese joint? According to this, order veggie and shrimp dishes, opt for things that are steamed, and choose stir-fried over deep-fried.
