Roasted asparagusToday is my very first Mother's Day as a mom and it's been wonderful. My son (adopted at age 10) made me a card at school and he picked flowers for me yesterday. Today, he's granting my Mother's Day wish by entertaining himself while I work and not begging me to take him to the skate park or the arcade or any of the other places he likes to haunt.

Later, we'll be getting together with my whole family. I have three sisters so, together with our mom, we're a whole house full of moms. As typical with my family, we're going to be celebrating with a potluck. I know one sister is making a lemon pie for dessert and another is making this delicious homemade bread, so I'm determined to bring some healthy dishes to pass.

For starters, I'm going to bring my sesame asparagus. Once upon a time, I'm sure there was an official recipe for it, but I've made it so often I've long stopped measuring and just make it from memory. Here's a similar recipe, though. Did you know you have the power to nurture your kids in a manner that might change their nature? You can also boost your little ones' IQs, conquer their stress, and ensure they get sick less often? You are a force to be reckoned with. Scientifically speaking anyway.

It's the strong mom-and-baby bond science is linking to smarter, healthier, happier children. Consider this: Nurturing mommy mice can actually change their pups' genes for the better with a whole lot of nurturing. Chances are human moms can do the same thing. Dads play a part too, but it's mom who generally has a more lifelong effect on kids, Mice studies also tell us that nurtured babies outsmart babes who are neglected by their moms, and pups who are snuggled by momma grow into less anxious, more self-assured adults.

Studies of moms and babies conclude that kids of very attentive mothers make friends more easily and get sick much less often.

I often ask moms of happy, well-behaved teenagers for advice. I figure if I stock up on strategies for the next few years, by the time my boys tumble in teen-hood, I'll know just what to do. Most moms feed me the same line: They love their kids unconditionally, they say, and they spend as much time with them as possible. Seems like a solid plan to me. I'm glad science agrees.

Overweight parents more likely to have overweight kids

This Mother's Day, be sure to thank your mom for everything she has given you. All the love, all the affection, all the attention one person could ever ask for. But, there may be one thing your mom has given you that, if you had a say in the matter, you may have respectfully declined: her overweight genes.

Well, mom isn't completely to blame for this; dad's weight factors in equally. An article in Muscle & Body magazine points to a British study suggesting that you have a 75 percent chance of being overweight if both of your parents are. Specifically, it seems that the accumulation of body fat and waist circumference are very hereditary, whereas environmental factors played a far more limited role.

Does this mean you're doomed to be heavy if your parents are? I wouldn't say doomed. Not at all, actually. Predisposed? Perhaps. But that doesn't mean that you can't do anything to change what would appear to be your fitness fate. Regular exercise and eating a healthy diet will work just as well for you to stay fit as it will for someone whose parents are quite lean, so don't even think about counting yourself out before the race even starts.

How about making this Sunday's Mother's Day an active one? If you like to run or walk, snag a last minute spot on one of the many Mother's Day races around the country.

Active.com has a great Mother's Day race locator -- just pop in your zip code, find a race and see if you can still enroll. If online registration is over, give a call to race officials to confirm you'll be able to register right on race day. Just think of it, a stellar early morning workout on Mother's Day with a t-shirt and racer goody bag to boot. Don't forget to invite your family to run or walk by your side or cheer you on at the finish.

Then be sure to return home to those flowers and a healthy Mother's Day brunch!

Moms need "me" time, Mother's Day and every day

A few weeks ago, I went to a movie by myself for the first time ever. I was feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, exhausted. I needed a few minutes of not being needed, and there was no babysitter in sight for a date night. So my husband took over and I took off. Thirty minutes into the film -- 27 Dresses at the $2 theater, if you're curious -- I realized that I was really enjoying myself.

As moms, we make time with our kids a priority, as we should. We also carve out couple time for our partners -- again, important. But far too often, there's little left over for ourselves ... and that's just not good for anyone.

CNN reminds us this Mother's Day that taking time for yourself is just as important as taking time for every other member in your family. When you don't have time to relax and unwind, you create stress on your emotional and physical health. So don't let this Mother's Day be the only day this year that you take time to rest and relax -- make it a regular occurrence. I'm already planning my next solo trip to the movies, but even a bubble bath or an hour alone to read a book in peace may be enough to help you refuel.

Give mom a whopper on Mother's Day

I'm already thinking about it: Mother's Day. Are you? The big day -- Sunday, May 11 -- arrives in less than one week. Which means you've got not quite seven whole days to think up a whopper of a gift for your mom -- or anyone who serves as mom to you. By "whopper," I mean not something big, expensive, or extravagant -- and not something that hails from your neighborhood McDonald's. I mean this: Thoughtful. Something that tells mom you know her, love her, and appreciate her.

For me, a candle fits the bill. I love candles. And my little boys know this. Every time we pass the Yankee candle shop in the mall, they ask me if I want to stop in for a visit. When we stroll the scented store together, they love finding fragrances and running them over to me. They also know I like quiet time. Once as they were backing out of the driveway in route to a guy's weekend getaway, they spotted me shedding a few tears as I waved them goodbye. "Enjoy the quiet, mom!" Joey shouted from his open window. He knows me well.

What do you know about your mom? Does she love the outdoors? Enjoy a home-cooked meal? Seek thrill and adventure? Give it some thought. And try to translate it into a whopper of a gift -- like a home-made gift certificate for an afternoon hike -- with you. Or a feast made by your own two hands with only the healthiest of ingredients. Or a zip-line excursion at a local ropes course location.

It really is the thought that counts. So start thinking now. And make your gift one that really matters.

Fitness time for Mother's Day

My absolute favorite gift for Mother's Day is time -- time alone for fitness. My kids hang with me all day long. If I'm not running them around town, I'm running to the grocery store in anticipation of cooking dinner. Yes, I am a stay-at-home mom and one element seriously lacking in my life is a sizable chunk of alone time so I can read the paper, paint my toenails, head to the gym, seriously stretch and take a luxurious hot shower without having to squeeze it in between preschool runs, blogging, graduate school and a part-time evening job.

If your mom digs the gym, purchasing a fitness-themed gift for Mother's Day is certainly a good idea. Maybe she needs an at-home barbell set or how about a cool new yoga shirt? I bet she'd be delighted with a fitness and diet book off the NY Times Bestseller list. Just make sure to include a block of Mom Alone Time, too. Solo time so she can actually crack open that new fitness book, slip on the yoga shirt for a Mountain Pose or simply stick her toenails on top of those new barbells for two coats of shiny red polish.
