Ralph Lauren Fires Size 4 Model for Being Too Fat
Dimitrios Kambouris, WireImage/HuffingtonPost
Filippa Hamilton, the 23-year-old stunner in the ad, was let go "as a result of her inability to meet the obligations under her contract," with Ralph Lauren or -- as her agency was told -- because she was a bit too large to fit into the clothing. Interestingly, they had recently issued a statement on the issue claiming she was "beautiful and healthy" -- is this to suggest that they'd prefer to have skeletal and gaunt models representing their brand over beautiful and healthy ones?
It's hard to have sympathy for a company that perpetuates such an unhealthy body image, and they definitely won't get any from Hamilton. "I think they owe American women an apology, a big apology," she said in the NY Daily News. "I'm very proud of what I look like, and I think a role model should look healthy." Amen, sister.

Sadly, many women are not happy in their skin. Katherine Heigl says she'd rather have Nicole Richie's body.

She even went on to pose, at that same weight (161 pounds, which is about 30 pounds more than she weighed in her modeling heyday), in a bathing suit on the cover of People magazine next to a headline saying "You Call This Fat?"
Now, the 35-year-old, 5-foot-10-inch stunner has slimmed back down, dropping a reported four dress sizes, according to the Daily Mail. And she feels "great."

By working out a few days a week and making diet changes to get in shape for the March 17 release of her new album, Clarkson reportedly lost 20 pounds, according to OK! Magazine. However, noticeable weight gain from a March 11 American Idol performance, coupled with recent concert photos show that Clarkson may have fallen off the wagon.

Sandra Bullock has admitted that obsessing over junk food drove her to overeat and then compensate for it with crash diets when she was younger. After Bullock wed husband Jesse James in July 2006, she gained again, leading to speculation that she was pregnant. Tired of combating baby-bump rumors, Bullock vowed to escape the frustrating cycle of weight gain and dieting. One thing that helped her was changing her meal staples from pizza and Diet Coke to lean meats and veggies.

Known for his "Gladiator" physique, Russell Crowe is not your average yo-yo dieter. Despite his reputation, Crowe packed on 63 pounds for his upcoming role in Body of Lies, according to "People." Crowe may be accustomed to looking a bit more toned than the flabby CIA veteran he morphs into for the role, but that isn't to say he didn't enjoy earning his paunch. We hear from PopEater that he joked, ""I'll have that cheeseburger for breakfast, thank you!" No word on how Crowe plans on thinning out yet, but if he plans on redeeming his sex-symbol status, he'll need to cut the burgers and pump some iron.

Early in her career, Jennifer Love Hewitt was known for her curves and slim waist. More recently, however, she filled out due to a lapse in healthy eating and steady exercise, according to iFitandHealthy.com. Overwhelmed with "photographers taking invasive pictures from bad angles," according to ABC News, Hewitt responded to criticism, claiming that she was comfortable in her skin. Soon after, however, ABC News points out that Hewitt dropped almost 20 pounds to "boost her energy." We hear from iFitandHealthy.com that Hewitt adhered to the calorie shifting diet, where you "confuse your metabolism by up-shifting and/or down-shifting into different calorie ranges, which may help your body burn more calories."

Although she vehemently denied having an eating disorder, Nicole Richie's weight has fluctuated between thin and absolutely gaunt in recent years. She dropped to 90 pounds in fall 2006, which according to "People," was due to an inability to gain weight. When Richie became pregnant, she apparently focused on gaining weight for her baby, while also maintaining a light gym routine, but her quick transition back into her pre-baby body after she gave birth reportedly left fans worried. In the past Richie has blamed her dramatic weight loss on stress, so maybe that's the reason she lost so easily this time, too.

Best known for his role as Chandler on "Friends," Matthew Perry's weight has ballooned and deflated in relation to his reported numerous addictions, including painkillers and alcohol. According to "People," after Season 6 of "Friends" Perry dropped down to 145 pounds during a particularly rough period due to pancreatitis induced by "hard living and drinking hard and eating poorly." This resulted in a rehab stint at L.A.'s Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Since his brief stay, his weight continued to fluctuate. Some of his weight gain can be attributed to recovery from addiction, while his periods of athleticism occurred when the former junior tennis champion "returned to the court and hired a personal trainer," according to "People."
When Britney Spears shimmied onto the music scene with her scandalous schoolgirl outfit at age 16, her stomach was flat as a washboard, and the rest of her body was youthfully fit. But after two babies, some said Britney wasn't looking too hot. To undo the toxic effects of hard living, we hear that she enlisted a personal trainer and got back on the dance floor. According to "OK!" Britney was so serious about getting into shape that she even cut back on her beloved Starbucks Frappuccinos!

Far from his fit disco days in Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta's weight has swung up and down in recent years as a result of diverse movie roles and personal habits. According to the BBC, in 2001 Travolta upped his exercise routine to lose 25 pounds for Swordfish. The intense workouts, which included yoga and boxing according to AskMen.com, must not have lasted, as Travolta looked pleasantly plump during a shirtless romp in his 2007 film Wild Hogs. According to reports from the Daily Mail, Travolta claimed that "Life is too short to diet constantly" and declared an intense love of food -- both of which go far in explaining his yo-yoing.

Christian Bale worked out like a maniac while doing both intensive cardio and weight-training sessions for his brutal role in 2000's American Psycho. Four years later, he dropped a reported 63 pounds, by eating only an apple and a can of tuna every day, to play a skeletal drug addict in The Machinist.

Anna Rawson Talks Golf, Sex and Dishes Advice for Beginners
Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Motivation

That's Fit: Throughout your years playing golf -- both as an amateur and as a professional athlete -- have you felt like you're playing a game that is still largely a "man's" game?
Anna Rawson: I believe golf is becoming much more popular among young people and especially women. Many women are becoming intrigued by a game that monopolizes so much of their boyfriends' or husbands' time. They tell me every day that they are curious why golf has this power over people, and they seem anxious to get involved. Tiger Woods revolutionized the sport, making it much more popular among people of all ages and socioeconomic classes. I do think that Tiger inspired many men and has helped inspire golf through a tremendous growth period. The way I see the game is that it has reached a steady growth rate now. I think men's golf is getting close to its saturation point. This creates an incredible opportunity for women golfers. The women's golf market is waiting to explode. Women's golf is waiting for someone to revolutionize it like Tiger did in men's golf, except a woman would have to do it quite differently. The woman would not only have to be good at her sport but also relate to women as a personality or even a role model. I am not sure that golf really needs to change. Old school attitudes, strict dress code and respect for the sport keep golf classy. I think it is up to the people who play the game to mold it a bit differently.
Cindy Crawford's Hot Body Defies Age
Forty-three is by no means old -- not even close -- but you have to admit that keeping fit doesn't get any easier as we age. Cindy Crawford, however, seems to have put the aging process on hold. She recently stripped down -- completely down -- for the anti-aging section of the latest issue of "Allure" magazine (on newsstands now). And I'll tell you what -- she looked just as good, if not better, than any woman half her age could hope to look.So what's her secret? Well, she follows a strict skin care routine including "a day cream with antioxidants, a sunscreen, a night cream, and an eye cream," and makes use of microdermabrasion to keep her skin looking flawless.
As far as her fabulous figure, she's said before that she doesn't find time to exercise; she makes time. And, reportedly, she sips on vinegar to keep her appetite at bay. Additionally, she told "Michigan Avenue Magazine" last fall, "I exercise and eat pretty well, and I'm not a big drinker. I want my kids to see their mom eating normally. If we go for ice cream, I might get the tiny size, but I'll eat it. I don't want my daughter to think she can't eat ice cream."
Whitney Port Comes to Aid of Skinny Model
Whitney's former fashion-industry boss Kelly Cutrone thinks so and stirred things up by confronting the model -- like, OMG, a hundred times, with "Are you OK?" and, "You seem a little skinny." Check out the video above as Allie's defenses flare and Whitney and co-star Erin attempt to smooth her ruffled feathers.
So, what do you think? Is Allie too skinny? Is everything OK as long as she feels healthy and happy? And what about the fact that it's a model's job to be thin -- how does this sit with you?

Victoria Silvestedt Says High Heels Make Her Slim
Swedish blonde bombshell Victoria Silvstedt has a figure most would die for -- both women and men. But staying slim is all in the job for the 34-year-old supermodel and Playboy pin-up -- she credits her tiny waist to wearing heels all day. "How I stay in shape? 12 hours a day in heels," she recently told reporters, adding, "I'm, literally moving all day long in heels. When I'm not working I do go to the gym and do my cardio but nothing beats the high-heel workout!"
Really? That's all it takes? I should have traded my flats for stillettos years ago. Except heels apparently ruin your back. Um, maybe comfy shoes and a regular cardio workout don't sound so bad after all.

As a three-time Sports Illustrated cover model and world famous supermodel, Cheryl Tiegs knows quite a bit about being beautiful. I suppose this makes her a perfect fit for her role as judge on ABC's new reality show True Beauty, which debuts this Monday, January 5 at 10 PM. Instead of really judging the unsuspecting contestants on their physical beauty, though, Cheryl and her cohorts will be removing folks who act really ugly. That should be fun to watch.

Model Miranda Kerr Loves Fried Chicken
When your job is to parade around in your underwear in front of thousands of people, you gotta look good. That's why Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr recently slimmed down for a lingerie show. But she admits that trimming down is never easy, especially because she has a fondness for high calorie fried foods -- or at least one such food in particular. "My favourite snack is fried chicken," says the gorgeous Kerr, adding "I make it myself!"
Wait, she snacks on fried chicken and looks that good? When I eat it, I'm relegated to my fat pants for at least a week. How fair is that?
And guess what? She's not the only one, as Female First reports. 50 Cent, Rihanna, Michael Jackson and Jennifer Lopez have all admitted to having a fondness for the Colonel's recipe by indulging in a little KFC.
Cindy Crawford - Make Time to Exercise
Cindy Crawford always looks stunning, whether she's toting around her kids, going out with her superstar friends or glamming it up on the red carpet with her husband. What's her secret? She recently spoke to Time Online about her healthy habits and how she manages to look so darn good all the time. "There is no secret, not like finding the perfect jeans," she says. "It's genetics - I was born with a good envelope - and lifestyle ... when I was 20, I was not super-skinny, so I got into exercise and it has become part of my life. You do not find time to exercise, you make time, otherwise you will find millions of other things to do."
And boy does she exercise. Crawford admits that before her kids, her workouts were so exhausting she had to rest afterwards, adding, "I found after I had my first kid I could not come home after my workouts and have a nap, so I had to adapt them to make them softer - so they would energize me, rather than wear me out."

Carol Alt poses for Playboy (at 47!) to promote raw food diet
Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Alternative & Green Health
Carol Alt might be a world-famous model, but she insists she's never been comfortable with her body. She says she was a heavy kid -- in fact, her sister is a plus-size model -- and even at 20 years old, she was tremendously uncomfortable with posing in a bathing suit. Now, at 47 years old, she's decided to pose for Playboy -- kind of a big change, right?. So what's changed? Mainly, her diet. Alt is a raw food devotee, and says that it's the reason she looks (and feels) as great as she does. She's even written a book about eating raw.
"In reality, at my age, to know that I have come to such a point, where I am comfortable enough with my own body after 12 years of eating raw ... is an amazing miracle in itself," said Alt. "I want to enlighten other people to the fact that as they age, they don't have to start feeling worse about themselves -- getting tired, getting moody, getting fat and becoming ill," adding that her purpose in posing nude is to get people talking about her message, which is "eat healthy, look healthy, and be healthy." Well, this certainly is getting people talking!
It's a start: Fewer too-thin models at New York Fashion week this year
Over the past few years, the fashion industry has received a fair amount of criticism for using too many skeleton-thin models. And it seems they're paying attention and trying to 'beef-up' -- well, if the recent New York Fashion week is any indication anyway. Nian Fish, the chair of fashion designers health initiative is insisting that all models used in the various shows were size 2 or 4 -- not 0 or 00, as was the previous standard. "I think there's progress," says Fish, "The girls are still slim. We didn't want them not to be slim. We wanted a projection of health"
Still, the fashion industry is a long way from embracing curves. "Thin is going to be the ruling look -- until someone says, 'I want voluptuous,'" said Fish. "I don't know if that ever is going to come back." And in London, plans to make models pass a health examination were dropped because of not enough international support.

Brooke Shields still fits into teenage jeans!
We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements
In 1980, when Brooke Shields was just a teenager, she did a few Calvin Klein jeans ads with the famous tagline, "You want to know what comes between me and my Calvins? Nothing." It appears the same has held true nearly 30 years later -- she showed up at a party for the designer's 40th anniversary wearing the same jeans. And yep, those are it in the picture.
Aside from the Calvins, Brooke obviously has pretty good genes of her own. But, genetics alone doesn't allow a 43-year-old woman and mother to fit into jeans she wore when she was 14 or 15, and Brooke shared a couple of her slim-down secrets, including cutting down on carbs.
She said, "If I stay away from too much carbohydrates, I'm usually better off," but that doesn't mean she deprives herself, adding, "I don't want to go through life not enjoying." In addition to watching her diet, she keeps her body buff by spinning and practicing yoga. Keep doing whatever you're doing, Brooke -- it's working!
Sweet, tasty and tart in one place
Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

I care more about the latter than the former, but I was enticed enough. A quick surf session brought me a collage of the weird faces people make when they dance, a piece from a model on how to take a decent pic and, my favorite, how to handle a Facebook request from someone who really isn't a friend.
I made sure to take note of the 1,600-calorie desserts, too, so I can avoid them!
MTV 'Model Maker' promises aspiring models weight loss of up to 80 pounds
Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment, Motivation
As if young women aren't already blasted with images and messages about whether or not they're thin enough, MTV is sending the message to its young viewers that, in order to be beautiful, you need to lose weight with their new reality show Model Maker. The show is holding auditions around the country now for women who "appear" to be between 18 and 25 and are willing to make their dreams a reality by dropping serious amounts of weight -- at least 30 pounds, and up to 80, within just 12 weeks. Basically, a pound a day.
Weight-loss shows are certainly successful, and it's not that I'm against a show that helps young women get down to a healthy weight, whether it's because they want to model or simply because they want to be healthier. However, the tone of this show (which still hasn't been given the green light for production -- they're waiting to see how the auditions go) seems to tell girls, "You're pretty now, but you could be beautiful if you lost a lot of weight -- fast."
Does this upset you as well? Or do you think it's just another reality show?
