Q. Hi Fitz. My doctor told me that that I have "hip instability" and I should work on it, but I have not idea what to do. What types of exercises will improve the strength in my hips? Leena

A. Hi Leena, Great question. I'm sorry your doctor didn't recommend a few visits with a physical therapist, though. That probably would have given you the perfect solution for your situation. Having said that, I work on this a lot with many of my clients, and there are some pretty simple exercises you can do to make your hips more stable.

Don't trust your cell phone

Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment

Remember all that talk about cell phones causing cancer, way back when mobile devices were the size of small bricks? We haven't heard too much on that subject lately, but that doesn't mean the supposed problem has gone away. In fact, a prominent cancer doctor has recently advised his staff to limit cell phone use because of the possible cancer risk. I'm no expert but I think that probably means we should be a bit concerned.

Dr. Ronald B. Herberman points out that while there's no definitive proof of a link between cell phones and cancer, it's better to play it safe than take a 'no news is good news' approach. "Really at the heart of my concern is that we shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Dr. Herberman told The Associated Press.

I'm not tossing mine just yet, but this definitely gives me the motivation to keep my calls short and sweet. What do you think?

Andy Camper

Nutrition & Supplements

Andy Camper
This weekend my son and I are going on a vacation. While we're staying in a cabin, we'll be spending most of our time outdoors -- at the beach, sand dunes, nature trails, and hiking paths. Both my son and I love to explore and check out what nature has to offer. A new web portal, Andy Camper, is all about outdoor adventures for kids.

The site offers dozens of how-to videos for kids; from geocaching to watching the stars. The site aims to get kids excited about the outdoors and to reconnect them with nature through fun, engaging ideas and activities.

My son is really into bugs right now (except spiders... they freak him out). Tonight, we're going to make this cool water viewer to help us look for bugs and other critters in the lake this weekend. Check it out! You're sure to find fun activities for you and your kids whether you're heading out on a special outdoor adventure, or just want to do some exploring in your own backyard.

Cellphones cause brain cancer and other common health myths

Diet & Weight Loss

I always worry a little bit after I've spent an hour or more chatting with a friend on my cellphone. I, like many others, have heard the rumor that excessive mobile use can eventually cause brain cancer. I love the convenience of my phone but obviously it's not worth it if I'm going to end up with a tumor.

According to this article that debunks 7 common health myths, I may not have to be so concerned. Apparently, the results of a study conducted by the University of Leeds, the University of Nottingham, the University of Manchester and the Institute of Cancer Research in London, showed that cellphone use isn't associated with and increased risk of developing gliomas, a common and deadly form of the disease.

Other myths that you can learn a bit more about in the piece include the truth about the 'freshman 15', whether soy prevents heart disease, if taking the pill causes you to put on pounds and whether you can use melatonin to cure jet lag.

Will chatting for hours on your cell cause hearing loss?

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products

A small study of 100 participants conducted by the chairman of the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India found long-term cell phone users who chatted on their mobile for an hour or more a day, were more likely to suffer from high-frequency hearing loss.

Users who had their phones for four years or more were most effected, while those who had only had their mobiles for two years were less likely to have problems. According to the article, those suffering from high-frequency hearing loss have trouble hearing consonants like s, f, t and z.

It's important to keep in mind though, that the study is small and the researcher who conducted it points out that a much larger study and more research needs to be done before any definitely links or conclusions can be drawn. So don't panic, but maybe try not to chat on your phone for hours on end either.

A reminder about cell phones and hospitals

Reviews & Products

I thought it was a known fact that cell phones were a no-no in hospitals, but everytime I go to one, I see a number of people chatting on their cell phones or texting like mad. What's the deal? Is it ok to use your cell phone in a hospital or not?

The answer is not, though there currently aren't any national guidelines concerning this issue. Wireless devices can negatively interfere with the machinery at hospitals and shouldn't be used. Devices that use Wifi, GPRS or some other method to get onto the Internet at the worst offenders, and while normal cell phones might be ok to use in some hospitals, callers should certainly avoid using them in ICU, operating or emergency units.

Mobile mammograms?

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products

One of the biggest challenges in the fight against breast cancer is getting women in the doctor's office for regular mammograms. Safeway is hoping to help out with this issue by creating an $800,000 digital mobile mammography unit (a van) that will make it easier for women to access screenings. The van can do up to 30 mammograms a day and will begin traveling around the Puget Sound area next month.

This digital "mammogram-obile" isn't the first of its kind -- they're growing more and more popular as a means of encouraging women to comply with one of the best known breast cancer treatment options we have: early detection.
