Snap goes Olympian Misty's achilles on Dancing With The Stars

Celebs & Entertainment

Practicing the Lindy Hop brought sand volleyball gold medal Olympian Misty May-Treanor to her knees last week on Dancing With The Stars. The diagnosis is a ruptured left achilles tendon -- ouch. This injury is very painful -- I ruptured my right achilles a year ago while coaching girls softball. I swear, all I did was jump skywards cheering our first grade catcher's miracle forceout at home. Riiippp.

Check out the video and witness May-Treanor's injury in real time. Beyond the fact it's disturbing to see this elite athlete sustain such a serious injury, you're probably wondering how she could have ruptured this critical tendon on a simple dance move and not on the volleyball court. While a rupture is most likely to occur in middle-age athletes who have not been training -- hardly May-Treanor -- it happens. I know a woman who ruptured hers running up the stairs. Whatever the reason, strengthening your achilles is a good act to follow. Check out Everything About Achilles Tendons for exercises, stretches and injury prevention tips.

May-Treanor underwent surgery this past Tuesday to repair the tendon and is planning a full comeback. I have no doubt she can return to top form but from personal experience, I know she'll likely need to make accommodations. That's Fit wishes May-Treanor a spectacular recovery and loads of sympathy from her husband.

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs: Misty May-Treanor joins DWTS cast

See you later, Kerri Walsh -- it looks like beach volleyball superstar Misty May-Treanor will be trying out a new partner ... at least for this season's Dancing With the Stars. She's not only content to be the winningest beach volleyball female of all time, or to have two beach volleyball gold medals -- she wants to be the best dancer, too!

I'm a little biased, since I'm a huge fan of Misty to begin with, but I have to say this is the most excited I've been for DWTS. While I enjoy seeing celebrities out there dancing, I like watching the athletes on the show even more. Seeing people with quick feet on the court or field translate that talent to dancing footwork is fascinating, and is a big reminder that athleticism comes in many forms.

Misty will be joined by fellow gold medal winner Maurice Greene, a sprinter, and retired football player Warren Sapp, along with Brooke Burke, Kim Kardashian, Susan Lucci, and others. Will you be tuning in?

Train like an Olympian: Kerri Walsh, beach volleyball

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Kerri Walsh, along with her partner Misty May-Treanor, has dominated the sport of beach volleyball for several years now. They won gold in Athens in 2004, and they're back for this year's games in Beijing, ready to repeat.

Kerri has some specific exercises that she feels are must-dos for her sport. She's a big believer in Pilates, as core strength is incredibly important in volleyball, and does "fast twitch training with her trainer Tommy Knox," which helps her to have greater boosts of strength and speed. Additionally, Kerri makes sure she does squats, shoulder exercises, cleans, and lunges. For cardio, she incorporates intervals to improve her performance.

Like anyone who trains as hard as she does, Kerri does experience the occasional injury. She recovers by drinking lots of water and using ice and heat. She also uses massage to get her body ready to compete.
