Q. Miss Fitz, I've been trying to lose about 25 pounds for a very long time and wanted to run something past you. I'm of the opinion that vegetarians are pretty trim. Should I go that route to lose weight? Nathan
A. Hi Nathan. Interesting question. I'm feeling both the urge to say yes and no, so I'll talk about the subject and let you choose. Vegetarianism has great benefits, and one of them can be weight loss -- if you do it right. There can be drawbacks as well, so hopefully I can help you make a decision that's right for you.

Food Technology - Can it Help You Lose?
Jonny's Take, Nutrition & Supplements
We hear a ton of stuff -- pro and con -- about genetically-modified food (GMO for genetically modified organisms), but truth be told, we've been dickering with the food supply for a very long time, and not always with bad results. Many of my colleagues in the "whole foods" movement don't share my view, but all tinkering with food isn't a bad thing. By adding iodine to salt, we've probably eliminated mental retardation caused by iodine deficiency. We already have flaxseed oil, designed to have higher levels of cancer-fighting lignans, and I can certainly envision, for example, a tomato with higher levels of vitamin A.
So should food technology be used to engineer lower-calorie food?

Peel away pounds with this breakfast food
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
The eggs have it. What exactly do they have? The power to peel away pounds, that's what.Poached, scrambled, or sunny-side up, eggs are a do-good diet food. We know this because people in one study on a low-calorie weight loss plan who ate two scrambled eggs with unbuttered toast -- jelly was permitted -- for breakfast lost 65 percent more weight than dieters who ate a bagel with cream cheese.
Here's the point: Eggs are filling, which keeps us satisfied longer, which keeps us from snacking later in the day. Here's the caution: This study featured a low-calorie diet, and this means eating eggs for breakfast works ony if you're watching what and how much you eat for the rest of the day.
Low-calorie diets are safe for bones, but surgery? Not so much.
Losing weight fast is widely regarded as really unhealthy. But researchers in Louisiana are questioning this notion, according to this article on Calorie Lab. In recent studies, diet very low in calories (we're talking 890 calories a day here) were shown to be and effective and fast way to lose weight without leading to dangerous loss of bone density.
I don't know about you but I'm still not convinced. There's no way eating less than 1000 calories a day can be good for you.
However, in related news, the same article points out that weight loss surgery like gastric bypass surgery, can lead to extensive bone loss. Researchers say that taking higher doses of supplements may help.

What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of chicken Caesar salads? OK, we know they are delicious, so how about the second thing? Yep, I think fattening, too. Daily Fit Tip: Love your liquids
You see, sometimes when we think we're hungry, we're mostly just thirsty, and having a tall glass of water can curb your hunger and keep you from binging on junk food. So try this: Next time you feel hungry and find yourself craving something unhealthy, either chug a low-calorie drink or have a small bowl of soup. Wait 20 minutes, and if you're still hungry, have something nutritious to eat.

Can you fight aging with a pill?
Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products
It's long been thought that a sustained low-calorie diet can fight aging, and according to this article, researchers are looking into how these positive effects can be put into pill form. It's thought that such a pill can also prevent a number of diseases all at once, which means it truly will be that miracle pill so many people are looking for.
Still, I think it will be a while before we can count on seeing such a product in the drug store. What do you think?
3 healthier cookie recipes
I don't know what it is that makes some people crave one kind of food and others another but it seems like the most common craving culprits are anything salty or anything sweet. I know lots of people who will ruin their diet for potato chip, popcorn and cheezies, while I've always had to battle my love for all things sugary including the two main groups -- foods with frosting and foods with chocolate.
Cookies are one of the hardest sweet treats for me to avoid so I've been searching out some healthier recipes and found a site with an entire page dedicated to healthy cookies recipes. The three that I'm looking forward to trying are the Sugarless Heart Cookies, which look good for anyone on a low-sugar diet, the Low Fat Peanut Butter Cookies because they sound tasty with the added benefit of protein and, perhaps the most delicious-looking find, the recipe for Low Fat Triple Chocolate Cake Bars.
Have you got a sweet tooth but are on a diet? Have you got any low-fat, low-calorie or sugar-free recipes to share?
Whey Low: Whey cool, or whey out there?
Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements
The University of Maryland is currently testing the product to see if it holds up to the manufacturer's claims. If, as claimed, an interaction between the three ingredients causes the sucrose and lactose to pass unabsorbed into the large intestine, Whey Low could be a healthier addition to your grocery store shelves.
