Autism and diet looked at in Canada

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products

Is there a link between autism and a specific diet? In many cases, parents seem to attach a reduced rate of autism symptoms with a gluten-free and dairy-reduced diet.

Although the vaccine preservative Thimerosal has been recently shunned as a possible cause of autism, other environmental factors are now going to be studied extensively.

This is a good thing -- the amount of chemicals in modern foods as well as the amount of genetic manipulation in many foods needs to be studied as a possible cause of many ailments. Autism could be right up there.

The coffee versus tea debate can divide people just like politics, and it doesn't help that there are constantly new headlines about which one is healthy and which one does more harm than good. No matter which side you're on, you should stay up to date with this week's Fit Links:

The Tea Blog by the teavangelist (cute name) covers all things tea, especially tea making health headlines.

Morning Coffee and Afternoon Tea has an amazingly good recipe suggestion for Jasmine Orange Iced Tea.

For serious runners, choosing the right running shoe can make the difference between success, failure, and permanent injury. But the best choice isn't always obvious. What's comfortable in the store may not be comfortable after a twenty mile run, and what looks pretty on your foot might not be comfortable at all.

This week I'm passing along some fitness blogs that offer advice on choosing the right running shoe:

FitFAQ.com, Not Your Average Fitness Blog, and the final blog, Trying Fitness I'm throwing in mostly because I like their tag line. Trying Fitness: Because you've tried everything else.

Do you know this feeling? You can feel that you're in a bad mood, and you don't want to be, but you're also not sure how to get out? I hate that feeling. Here's some of my favorite links with quick fixes for a bad mood:

US News: Health has a list of seven instant, classic mood boosters including exercise and meditation.

Good Housekeeping also has a list of mood boosters, with a few surprising ones, like scents. Who knew the scent of Play-Doh could have the power change your outlook on life?

Redbook has also compiled a list of suggestions for fixing a bad mood fast. Their list includes a bit of everything, from physical (specific pilates moves) to ironing your favorite shirt. Hey... whatever works!

Note: If your bad mood isn't just temporary and a quick fix is definitely not enough, talk to your doctor about depression.

Today just happens to be National Don't Step on a Bee Day. (Don't worry, I had never heard of it before now either.) Really, every day is a good day not to step on a bee, and also a good day not to get bit by a mosquito or tick. Fight back against bugs with these informative blogs:

Did you know Vicks Vaporub can help relieve the itching caused by mosquito bites? Skinverse.com can tell you why.

Dr. Green can help you differentiate between a normal reaction to a bee sting in your child and an allergic reaction which requires immediate medical attention.

The great family camping vacation: think hiking and fresh air and sitting around a campfire... it sounds wonderful! Camping can be a healthy, fun family vacation, but there's also plenty of dangers involved and some are more obvious than others. Workouts get stale. We get bored with the same old moves mentally, and lose our motivation to get to the gym. Our muscles are no longer challenged after too long in the same workout rut, and we stop seeing results. Both your body and your mind want you to get some new moves every now and then, and here are a few good places to shop around for new ways to spice up your workouts.

Men's Health has The Firefighter Workout, which in addition to being a great workout is something cool-sounding to tell your friends when they ask how you're getting visible results so fast.

Women's Health has a fun build-your-own workout tool, and their Ultimate Fitness Blog always has great tips too.

Better Body Journal has a full body workout you can do at home with no gym required, so if you just canceled your gym membership that's no longer an excuse!

Fit Links: Nutrition information about your favorite restaurant meals

As fabulous as we at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

If you eat out often and are concerned about your health and diet, you've probably gotten in the habit of scanning menus for their healthiest options. But sometimes looks can be deceiving, and unless you're the chef actually preparing the meal it can be confusing which choices are the good ones and which ones are hidden diet disasters. This week, I'm sharing a few of my favorite websites for finding nutritional information about restaurant foods:

It's not just about calories, either. These sites also offer full nutritional information including fat and saturated fat content as well as the "positive" nutritional content, like vitamins and fiber. I hope that your favorite restaurant is on at least one of these lists, and I also hope that your favorite dish turn out to be surprisingly healthy!

Your hair is one of the first things people notice about your appearance. When it's healthy, your hair can be a reflection of your personal style and help you look your best. But what about things like hair loss, split ends, and frizziness? Here's some of my favorite blogs to help keep you in-the-know about having healthy hair.

Hairstyle.com has suggestions for diet solutions to fight graying, thinning, or greasy hair.

Hairparlor.com is an all-around haircare website with news and tips from experts about getting and styling healthy hair.

Procrastinators, it's okay! It's still not too late to get in beach-body shape in time to enjoy all those fun summer activities that require you to wear a swimsuit. Below are three workouts specifically designed to give you fast toning in the places you need it most.

So, choose the workout that sounds the most enjoyable to you, get that body in shape, and enjoy summer. When you're showing off your fit new body, just don't forget to wear sunscreen!

Shape.com's bikini body bootcamp has some fresh moves and routines that mimic real-life boot camp. Give this workout a try if you're looking for something different from your usual gym routine.

Bella Online's workout has animated diagrams, which are really helpful if you're not sure you're performing the movements correctly.

Prevention.com's beach body workout even involves a move called the "beach ball squeeze." Any fitness routine that requires a beach ball is a winner in my book.

Fit Links: Healthy grilling

As fabulous as we at That's Fit think this blog is, the truth is there are hundreds of wonderful blogs on healthy living to be seen all over the blogosphere. So in this feature, Fit Links, we'll introduce you to some that have caught our eye.

Memorial Day weekend is right around the corner, and for lots of families, that means the beginning of barbecue season! I just love the smell and taste of food cooked on a backyard grill. But depending on how you choose and prepare your food, grilled meals can either be healthy and full of nutrition, or dangerously full of fat and carcinogens. If you're a fan of grilling, get informed on the latest health-related grilling news with these blogs:

Purple Medical Blog features a great article on unsafe chemicals produced by barbecuing meats.

The Green Guide is a production of National Geographic that offers advice on green grilling. No, green grilling isn't just grilling things that are green. It's about making an effort to put the environment first, from using recyclable grilling equipment to environmentally conscious grill cleaning products.

The Livin' the Vida Low-Carb Blog is a great resource for everyone doing the low-carb thing. For starters, check out their recipe for healthy, low-carb grilled shrimp.
