Women with chronic headaches are more prone to depression

Millions of women suffer from chronic headaches, with 90 percent of them experiencing migraines. As if that isn't difficult enough to deal with, a study showed that women with chronic headache were four times likelier to report symptoms of major depression than were those with episodic headache.

The women who reported the symptoms of major depression were three times more likely to have symptoms related to the headache, like low energy, trouble sleeping, nausea and other pains and problems. These painful physical symptoms could cause or provoke major depression, and depression can heighten pain perception.

While the cause of the link between headache and depression isn't entirely known, it is certain that one is related to the other, making the research and treatment of both all the more important.

Obese fathers might be the cause of liver disease in kids

If your dad was obese when he was young, are you at a higher risk of liver disease? A recent study indicates you are.

The U.S. study, including over 1700 participants with an average age of 42, found that "people whose fathers were clinically obese at an early age were more likely to have increased liver enzyme levels, an indicator of liver disease." These findings held ground regardless of the subject's BMI, indicating that the father's weight truly is a factor.

Red meat linked to cancer (again), this time lung

Red meat has been taking a bad rap, because apparently headlines want you to think it's cancer on a grill. One of the first hits it took was being linked to breast cancer in women. Now researchers are saying red meat is linked to lung cancer. Will the flogging ever end?

This research was serious about doing business. Half a million people took part in it, ages ranging from 50 to 71. Eight years later, they counted the number of cancer cases diagnosed. It was over 50,000. The results say that those with the highest elevated risk were among the people consuming the most red meat. By the way, red meat was considered anything beef, pork or lamb, which includes bacon, sausage, cold cuts, ham and hot dogs. Just shoot me now.

I'm still going to stand by the golden rule of moderation. A steak every now and then probably won't kill you. Of course, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that all this processed stuff isn't 100% healthy in the long-run. Okay, I'm taking off the tinfoil hat now to use my cell phone while eating a burger.

Marie Osmond passes out after Live Dancing with the Stars routine

Moments ago, after her very athletic Dancing with the Stars routine on Live television, Marie Osmond passed out and fell back on stage. Tom Bergeron, while shocked, kept it together enough to call for a commercial break. Now that the break is over, Marie confessed it happens sometimes "when she's working really hard and forgets to breath". Makes us trainers seem less silly for coaching our clients to breath regularly, huh? First words out of Marie's mouth when she came to were "Oh crap!"

Coronary disease and colon cancer linked

Coronary artery disease sufferers possessed nearly double the amount of colorectal tumors and cancers compared to those without the artery ailment, according to a new study out of Hong Kong.

It's interesting here to see how cancer of the colon relates to heart disease. Researchers on the study indicated that both conditions were probably related to chronic inflammation more than any specific link between artery disease and cancer tumors.

Still, the risk factors for both diseases are very similar, according to the researchers. The list sounds like a broken record to many of us: high-fat diet, a high-protein diet, a sedentary lifestyle. Although a high-protein diet may sound odd to some, it's right up there. This is why you'll see the word 'balanced' in front of diet in many cases. Too little or too much both can be problems in striving to maintain a state of good health.

Most teens happy with themselves if happy with their looks

I know a lot of things have changed in the 15 years since I attended Jr. High (fashion included, I don't think I ever see young teenagers wearing oversized plaid shirts anymore). Apparently though, one thing that hasn't changed is the link between looks and self-esteem.

When I was 13 I hated how I looked and, as a result, I felt pretty bad about myself in general. It didn't matter that I excelled in school and had lots of friends; the only thing that I cared about was that I wasn't cute or pretty. I know I can't speak for everyone, but I'm willing to bet I wasn't alone.

According a study conducted with seventh-and eighth-graders, kids today feel very much the same way. Those who liked how they looked were overwhelmingly more likely to admit to feeling good about themselves as well. The only group for whom there was not a link between looks and self-esteem was males of African decent (and the article gives possible reasons for this). Am I the only one that finds it sad that for whatever reason, these young adults don't seem to equate anything other than how they look -- intelligence, musical skill or sports ability, for example -- with how they feel about themselves? Why do you think this is?
