Seven Pounds Overweight? It's Enough to Harm Your Health

Diet & Weight Loss

When it comes to weight, it's typically assumed that five to 10 extra pounds is nothing to fret about. Not so. Being just seven pounds overweight can increase your chances of heart failure.

According to a team of prominent researchers in Boston, "even those who were only modestly overweight had a higher risk of suffering heart failure. Apparently, the more overweight the person is, the higher the risk." Additionally, "regardless of how much exercise a person does, those with a higher body mass index also have a higher risk of heart failure."

Wow -- how disconcerting for those of us who spend hours on the treadmill and can't seem to budge the numbers on the scale. Still, good reasons to watch those numbers, no?

Kelly Osbourne's five weight-loss tips

Celebs & Entertainment

Reality TV star and socialite Kelly Osbourne hasn't been in the spotlight much these days, but she's recently been spotted looking slim and trim at various star-studded events. According to Life and Style Magazine, here's how she lost weight and improved her health all at once:
  • She munches on Organic fruits and veggies throughout the day
  • She cut out her main vice food -- cookies
  • She quit eating late at night
  • She cut out beer
  • She kept her caloric intake between 1,200 and 1,500 a day.
I'm not a fan of calorie counting, but her other diet tips sound healthy and effective. What do you think?

Lose up to 7 lbs in your belly with these 5 tips

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

Paunch, Buddha belly, spare tire, food baby -- whatever you call it, you're sick of the excess belly bloat you're carrying around. Dieting is one way to get rid of it, but what if you need results fast? The experts over at Prevention magazine put together a four-day jumpstart plan for reducing belly bloat, and they claim that if you follow it, you could lose up to seven lbs!

Here are some tips to follow over the four days:

  • Avoid salt, meaning don't add any to your food and don't eat really salty foods either
  • Avoid excess carbs, especially white breads and pastas
  • Avoid gassy foods, like peppers, legumes, broccoli and citrus foods
  • Avoid gum. Strange but true -- instead of helping you lose weight, it causes bloating because you're swallowing air.
  • Cook your veggies. You get just as many nutrients in a smaller amount of cooked veggies than you do in a large amount of raw veggies, taking up less room in your GI tract.

What women want: Priorities of females according to Prevention

Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss

Prevention Magazine recently posted the results of a series of polls they did on women and their health. According to the results 67% of women rate 'Happiness' and the top aspect that affects their overall health, followed by stress levels, weight, energy levels and relationship with spouse. I don't know about you, but I would have thought that one's relationship with their spouse would rank higher in importance. Other surprising finds?
  • 86% of women who are dieting are going about it on their own, without help from a weight-loss program or dieting buddy
  • Yet on average, women say they lose 5 lbs more when they diet with a friend
  • 58% of women would rather be 10 lbs slimmer than look 10 years younger
  • 74% would rather be given a million dollars than be their ideal weight for the rest if their lives.
What do you think about these results? I think I would prefer to be a healthy weight no matter what I ate than a millionaire, but that's just me.

Adult success depends on your weight at birth

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

How much you weighed at birth may still be having an effect on your life, specifically in how successful and healthy you are as an adult. This information comes from a good sized study that looked at more than 12,000 people over a period of 35+ years. The findings show that people who weighed less than 5.5 lbs. at birth are one-third more likely to drop out of high school, make an average of 15 percent less income each year, and have the health of someone over 40 years old when they're only in their thirties.

There are all kinds of theories out there on why this is, the most popular one linking low-income parents and poor prenatal care to low birth-weight outcomes, which in turn means the child is at increased risk due to being raised in an underprivileged environment. What do you think? Is this true?

Losing 20 lbs. in a month, without exercise?

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements

Losing weight with no exercise and binging on junk food one day a week seems like a plan that's too good to be true. It's a fact that regular exercise has a number of benefits, but Tim Ferriss who is an adviser to more than 30 Olympic and professional world record holders has written a post about a diet which lost him 25 lbs. in 30 days. Of course no one is saying to throw away your jogging shoes, but if you already work out on a regular basis, try supplementing your regimen with this diet.

His first bit of advice says NO to "white" carbs. We've heard this one before, and many health-conscious people have already kicked this particular food. For everyone else, he classifies white carbohydrates as bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta, and fried food with breading. If you need bread, it's not hard to get hooked on the healthier wheat alternative.

Another rule he has is to avoid drinking your calories. This is sound advice, especially for someone like myself who can be a sucker for outrageous coffees. Water, unsweetened tea, and diet sodas are perfect for getting you through the day without sneaking in unneeded calories. Tim has more to offer from his diet plan, and it seems to work well for him. Remember to find out how your body vibes with these changes, or discover your own perfect diet!
