Jumpstart Your Fitness: By having happier joints

Filed under: Fitness, Healthy Habits, Jumpstart Your Fitness

Last week, the Jumpstart Your Fitness post was about how we all take advantage of our feet, using and abusing them and neglecting to take very good care of them until they start screaming out in pain or discomfort. Well unfortunately the same can be said for the way we treat our joints. Knees, hips, ankles ... they all do their jobs on a daily basis, usually quietly and without complaint, but also without a second thought or moment of consideration from the people to whom they belong. Men and women are quick to work on health routines for strengthening muscles and protecting skin, but what about strengthening and protecting your joints? Nothing slows (or halts altogether) a workout routine faster than knee pain, hip pain, shoulder pain, etc.

So follow these guidelines for having healthier joints, starting today:

Good sports are winners, even when they lose

I dare you to read this story without getting choked up.

Throughout their high school and college careers, student-athletes are told over and over again that sportsmanship is important. That's why, in many sports, the athletes and coaches shake hands before and after each game. However, what happened at a Central Washington University softball game is the greatest display of sportsmanship I've ever heard.

The game, versus Western Oregon, would decide whether Central would keep their Division II playoff hopes alive -- it was the second game of a double header, the first of which Western had already won. In the second inning, 5'2" senior right fielder Sara Tucholsky stepped up to bat with two runners on, and did something she'd never done before, not even in practice -- she hit a home run.

Elated, she sprinted to first base and rounded it, but as she did so, she realized she hadn't actually made contact with the bag. She turned to go back and felt an enormous pain as her knee gave out, and she collapsed right there on the base path.

Knees of steel

A few years ago I took a tumble down a flight of stairs. It was my third day at a new job and I was carrying a couple of boxes, not using the handrail, walking down a flight of unfamiliar steps, and wearing high heels. Smart? Nope. Graceful? Absolutely not. Humiliating? You betcha. I unfortunately messed up my knee pretty badly. The worst of the injury healed, but I've been left with a weak knee ever since and it does limit the activities I participate in.

This tool has some simple steps for stronger knees -- to help prevent injuries, regain function, and reduce pain. Exercises include the modified squat, step up, toe stand, knee extension, and hamstring curl. I'm going to give them a shot to see if I can get my gimpy knee back in shape. How about you?

Q. Hi Fitz, I'm trying to lose weight, but exercising is a problem for me since I am almost 300 pounds. I have a bad knee and my hip hurts, so I am looking for an exercise tape that is low impact but helps me burn as many calories as possible during the work out. Thank you, Paula

A. Hello Miss Paula, I'm glad to hear from you. I've trained many people who weigh between 300 and 500 pounds, and the pain you're feeling in your knees and hip is not unusual. The more weight we carry, the more strain our joints endure. You're wise to look for low impact exercises.

Q. Hi Fitz. I have a question in regards to squats and lunges for working out. I am 29 years old and last year I was told that I had arthritis under my knee caps, so I should no longer do squats and lunges as part of my work outs. Is there a way to modify these exercises or something else that I can do that is just as effective? Thanks, Mindy

A. Hello Miss Mindy. Great question. Arthritis can be very frustrating, and I'm sorry you're having to deal with it! Squats and lunges are specifically stressful to a fragile knee, because they require you to place about 100% of your body weight on them while performing each exercise. Not a good idea when the knee is already sore.

Treating knee pain

Posted: Dec 13th 2007 9:58PM by Martha Edwards
Filed under: General Health, Healthy Habits

Do you suffer from knee problems? I do, and it's kept me from being an avid runner, despite my best attempts to just 'get over it.' But knee pain doesn't have to be a way of life; here are some ways to treat it, according to Everyday Health:
  • Low-impact exercises can strengthen the knee muscles without pain. For instance? Try swimming, cycling or working out on the elliptical trainer.
  • Pain reducing and anti-inflammatory meds can be injected directly into the joint
  • If it's arthritis, anti-rheumatic drugs can make a difference.
If you're suffering from chronic knee pain, talk to your doctor about treatment options.

Need-to-know knee news

More than two-thirds of the half-million Americans who have knee replacement surgery every year are women, according to the November 1 issue of Ladies Home Journal. In the next 25 years, as baby boomers continue to age, that number is expected to increase by 673 percent. Ouch.

Check out these facts: Young female athletes are more likely than men to injure their knee-stabilizing anterior cruciate ligaments. Women with wider pelvises have the least stable knees. And more than two-thirds of people with osteoarthritis, which leads to knee pain, are women.

What's a woman to do? If your pain has already begun, look into physical therapy and prescription and over-the-counter medications to alleviate discomfort. For prevention, you can identify fitness activities that support the knees. To get you started, here are some sample good-for-the-knees exercises.

Sprains and Strains: What's the difference?

Posted: Oct 26th 2007 2:31PM by Martha Edwards
Filed under: Fitness, General Health

The terms sprain and strain sometimes seem to be used interchangeably when talking about an injury, but despite being separated by only one letter, the two are actually very different. Want to know what the difference is? Here's the answer according to the Mayo Clinic:

A sprain is the tearing or stretching of ligaments in your body -- these are the tough bands that connect your bones, so sprains happen at your joints, in particular your knees and ankles.

A strain is the stretching or tearing of your muscle or tendon, so a strain is commonly referred to as a pulled muscle. Since it affects muscles, it could happen all over your body but it commonly occurs in your hamstrings of your back.

Knee pain? It could mean something worse than you think

According to new research smokers need to be especially conscious of knee pain, as it could be an early indicator of lung cancer. In a small study looking at patients with both knee inflammation and pain, a small percentage (only 2%) were also found to have non-small cell lung cancer. Now that may sound like an extremely small number, but consider this: of that 2% that had both knee pain and cancer all of them were smokers.

Non-small cell lung cancer is very difficult to treat unless it's caught in the early stages, so getting this clue that knee pain could be an indicator could really help save lives.

Glocosamine or cayenne pepper

I was buying glucosamine tablets for my dog to cut down on arthritis inflammation. Then saw some in the drug store for people and thought I would give them a try for the pain in my joints from arthritis. I did not notice much change for either of us. Then I read an article today that glucosamine trials show little benefit against arthritis. The results of 15 trials of over the counter glucosamine vary so widely that industry bias may be a factor influencing the more positive outcomes, concludes a team writing in the July issue of Arthritis & Rheumatism.

Click here to read the MSN health news article and you be the judge.

Native Americans have used cayenne pepper as both food and medicine for at least 9,000 years. It has also been used as a topical remedy for arthritis and muscle pain. So I think I will pull one of my favorite spices out of the cabinet and give it a try to remedy the knee joint pain the natural way. The University of Maryland Medical Center has an article on the healing powers of cayenne pepper. Click here to read their report.

Do you have referred pain?

Quite often patients schedule visits with their doctor due to knee pain only to find out that the problem actually lies in their hips. Called "referred pain," it's a fairly common phenomenon based in very complex causes related to the nervous system and how the body is internally "wired."

Only a doctor can help you find out if pain is truly coming from the source or is referred from some other body part. Keeping track of the symptoms of your pain and talking openly with your doctor about them, as well as asking about different treatment options, is really the best thing you can do.

Preventing knee injuries: 4 safe exercises to try

Posted: May 14th 2007 3:01PM by Rigel Gregg
Filed under: Fitness

When it comes to our joints, knees are strangely strong and weak at the same time, but they are absolutely vital to our mobility and general fitness. Without healthy knees physical activity becomes a next to impossible challenge.

So protecting the knee joints and preventing injury is a top priority, especially if you're just getting started with new fitness goals. There's nothing worse than getting hurt and having to stop right when you're starting to get the hang of things and are developing new healthy habits -- we all know how hard it is to get that energy and motivation back again!

There are two components, according to this article, when it comes to protecting your knees against injury: losing weight (to decrease their workload) and building strength in the muscles that surround and support the knee joint. The losing weight part is more complicated (but you're on the right track by visiting That's Fit!) than strengthening the joint, which is as simple as doing some regular exercises. Try these 4 knee-safe moves: knee squat, lying double leg curl, lying leg adduction, and standing calf raise.

Jumpstart Your Fitness: Get fit faster by avoiding injuries

Nothing will slow up your fitness progress like getting hurt. Depending on the injury, you might have to pass on your workout for just one day, or possibly for several months. Then, if you're anything like me, it's so hard to get motivated again -- it feels like you're back to starting from square one. So the best thing is to do whatever you can to avoid that horrible fitness trap altogether by paying attention to your body and taking steps to avoid workout related injuries.

Exercises that are easy on the knees

I know from experience that the knee is one of the more vulnerable joints on the body -- especially for active people who spend lots of time running and walking. So it's important that we learn to look after our knees, and take measures to not only treat injury but to prevent it as well. eDiets has come up with a series of easy knee-friendly exercises that can help build muscle in the joint without straining it.

If you already have trouble with your knees like I do, I find it's a good idea to find exercises that don't put too much pressure on them. Using the elliptical trainer and swimming are two of my favourites.

What do you do for you knees?
