Top 5 Reasons to Always be Fit

The Passion Principle, Motivation

Every Monday, That's Fit's very own "charged up" wellness guru Laura Lewis presents The Passion Principle, a weekly guide that will help you achieve your greatest potential through words of inspiration, cutting-edge ideas and action tips you can use in your every day life!

Being fit can improve your sex life, your outlook on life and, oh, about a million other areas of your life! Sometimes we get so focused on making our waists thinner, our butts smaller and our arms more toned that we lose sight of the benefits we get by throwing on our tennis shoes, hitting the gym and eating right!

For some extra motivation to work out and eat healthfully check out these five reasons to always be fit.

  • Improves Sex Drive. No doubt about it -- both men and women who lift weights on a regular basis experience elevated levels of testosterone. When the big "T" hormone goes up, so does your desire to have sex. An added bonus for men who exercise is improved erections. Do I have you thinking it might be a good idea to hit the gym?
  • Boosts the Love-Yourself Factor. People who work out on a regular basis experience heightened self-esteem! Research has shown over and over again that by simply getting a move on via walking, running and generally being active several days per week, you can really feel better about yourself. Those with the lowest self esteem usually have the greatest gain in the love-yourself arena.

Yep, it's the jobs of celebs to look good on the red carpet, and they definitely excel at it. Well, most of them. Of course, the ones who are the most fit get our seal of approval.

And, as we wind down 2008, we wanted to know who your favourite fit celeb of the past year was. Here are your top three picks:

  • Kelly Ripa, who admitted to working out every day this year, got 18 percent of the votes.
  • Jennifer Lopez, who ran a triathlon after giving birth to twins, scored 15 percent.
  • And Hugh Jackman, who was too blindingly gorgeous for us to even care what his workout was, also had 15 percent of the votes.

All excellent choices. Thanks for your input!

Kelly Ripa Works Out Every. Single. Day.

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs, Celebs & Entertainment

I try to get some sort of exercise every day, but in reality, it's more like five times a week -- when it's not -20 out. So I'm pretty impressed with Kelly Ripa's recent admission that she never misses a workout. In a recent issue of OK magazine, Kelly told reporters, "I work out every day. I try never to take a day off. For me, one day leads to two days off, leads to five days off. I'm an all-or-nothing person."

As for finding time to work out? She says it's easier now that all her kids are in are in school but adds, "If you want something bad enough, you have to get up early and do it or wait until the kids go to bed. I go during lunch break."

Good for Kelly but if you're just starting a fitness regime for the first time come 2009, I would recommend giving yourself a day or two off. You can read more on Kelly's workout tips here, here and here.

Motivation - Whose Body Would You Tape to Your Gym Bag?

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Kelly RipaIt doesn't need to be your gym bag. It can be your fridge, the door of your snack-filled pantry, your treadmill -- you name the place. But answer me this: Whose hot body would you plaster (in photo form, not the real thing) on your location of choice to keep you motivated? Kristen says in a recent post that she might tape a photo of hot momma Jessica Alba on her gym bag. She got me thinking that this isn't such a bad idea. So I want to know who motivates you.

Me? That tummy that belongs to Fitz is pretty inspirational. I'm a fan of Madonna's built bod too. I like Kelly Ripa's thin but toned physique. And The Biggest Loser trainer Jillian Michaels -- I love her look. Maybe I need a whole gallery of shots to keep me pumped.

What about you? Give me your pick -- celebrity or otherwise -- and I'll report back on what I learn.

Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heidi Klum, Kelly Ripa
Are you still thinking about that Thanksgiving feast you enjoyed on Thursday? One of these celebrities isn't, because she thinks Turkey Day is about more than just yummy food.

Which celebrity thinks you should forget about the decadent dishes and make sure "you take a moment to think about how much you do have (health, love, friendship, passion, perspective, appreciation, intellect, reason, kindness) and reflect on how you can share more of it with others."

Take your pick: Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, Heidi Klum, or Kelly Ripa?

Kelly Ripa gets ripped with these 6 moves

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Kelly Ripa Kelly Ripa looks pretty darn great. Kelly's fit frame has graced the cover of not one, but two fitness magazines. (Though I don't understand why Shape magazine air-brushed Kelly's cute outie belly-button and made it an innie.)

Now, you can try these six moves that help keep Kelly in shape:

  • Triceps can-can. Like Kelly, this move is a little quirky and a lot of fun. But it definitely works your triceps, quads, and abs, too.
  • Leg raise. You'll need a counter or tall chair for balance with this move, which works your butt and outer thighs.
  • Thigh dancing. Definitely unusual, Kelly swears this move works her quads, butt, and abs. We've even got her on video doing this move.
  • Pretzel. You'll need some balance and flexibility to do this move, which works your butt, thighs, and abs.
  • Squat with ball squeeze. If, like Kelly Ripa, you're a parent, you probably have more than your fair share of sports balls around the house. Put one of them to use with this move that works your legs, butt, and inner thighs.
  • Rolling crunch. Put a new twist on the standard crunch with this move.

Get fit: Hit the barre!

Fitness

Looking to incorporate a new kind of workout into your routine? Head to the barre -- the ballet-barre, that is! Celebs like Kelly Ripa go to ballet-barre classes, which include thigh-toning, ballet-inspired exercises along with ab work like you'd do in Pilates.

Unfortunately, not all gyms offer ballet-barre classes, but that doesn't mean you're out of luck. Try these exercises from Health.com to sculpt strong, lean, beautiful legs. You just might find some muscles you didn't even know you had!

If the idea of dance as fitness really appeals to you, do some searching around your town. Dance studios sometimes have adult-beginner classes, or will do private/small group lessons. And don't count out your local YMCA -- there are always new dance programs popping up there, so go ahead and raise the barre!

Thigh dancing with Kelly Ripa

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

I have to admit that I got a halfway decent workout from watching this Kelly Ripa video (via Fitsugar). Not from trying the moves myself ... from laughing out loud. She leads a group of people, including CNN's Anderson Cooper through a series of quite ridiculous exercises. Anderson Cooper's response is hilarious. There's no way he's going to let himself be caught on video doing the thigh dancing "lasso" move.

Though I'm sure some of the moves were just for laugh value more than anything, quite a few of these exercises could have impact. I might give them a try (when I'm home alone, with the blinds firmly closed). Because, crazy looking as it might be, Kelly Ripa is doing something right -- the girl looks great!

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs Weekly Roundup: April 11, 2008

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs Weekly Roundup, Celebs & Entertainment

Salma Hayak is human -- she gained a lot of weight while pregnant due to gestational diabetes and hasn't lost it all just yet, but she's not too concerned. As for the weight gain, she said, "This is just what it takes for me to have this baby, and I really want it!" She might not be quite back to the nearly-impossibly hourglass figure she had before becoming pregnant, but she looks healthy and happy.

OK! Magazine did a cover story on how Britney Spears lost 15 pounds -- find out how! Oh, wait ... she didn't. They just used a picture from five years ago to make it look that way. Now, honestly, if she loses weight or not isn't really the issue for Brit right now -- the girl seems to be making some progress mentally and emotionally, and it seems to me like that's where her focus should stay. Keep it up, girl!

Kelly Ripa on how she looks so good

Celebs & Entertainment

Kelly Ripa, co-hostess extraordinaire and hot mama to three little ones, is on the cover of the new Fitness Magazine and if you look in between the covers, she shares her secrets to looking good. Here are some of the things she has to say:
  • On starting fitness later in the game: "I was the same way about exercise. I didn't do it in my 20s and I was like, it's too late to start now. I figured, I work in an industry where there's a stylist and a makeup artist -- they'll make me look fine. But I began feeling tired -- just playing in the park with my kids wore me down. I thought, 'Geez, I'm kind of young to be feeling this way.' So I started walking on a treadmill. Then I started jogging on a treadmill. Then I began jogging outside. Now I'm running outside, three to five miles, and taking toning classes."

We love to gawk at fit celebs weekly roundup: How do they do it?

We Love To Gawk At Fit Celebs Weekly Roundup

One of the reasons I adore Jamie Lee Curtis forever and ever is that she let herself be photographed pre-makeup. That kind of honesty about what goes into maintaining a celebrity look is very rare. So for this week's roundup, let's look at how the celebs manage to look the way they do.

Kelly Ripa is on the cover of Fitness, and the publicity email claims the photos feature her "un-airbrushed bellybutton". Just the bellybutton, then? Well, she was happy to share her secret to a perky booty: "I buy jeans that are tight in the rear end. I'm not kidding. I treat my cheeks like breasts in a push-up bra. I just reach down in there, lift them up and push them together. And they'll stay put if the jeans are tight enough in the seat." Bra jeans. We feel you, Kelly.

Speaking of bras, Jane Seymour reveals what goes into star-boobs: implants. She confessed she had a boob job--with implants so small the surgeon had to special-order them. 'Kay. Good for her at least for being open about it.

So how do celebrities and Hollywood power players stay svelte? Freaky eating habits. Thank goodness we don't live in L.A.

Perhaps skewed visions of diet are behind Geri Halliwell's claim that she never diets herself. She also says she doesn't exercise, except for a little walking and yoga. Mmm hmm. Oh, but she drinks loads of water. Well, that explains it. Listen, either Ginger is lying, or she's in Julia Robert's camp. Which is...

Having the good fortune to be blessed with great genes, and Julia is straight-up about it. She's also in the minority most likely. Check this quote that makes me wanna smooch her: "I have been working out, but listen, it is 97 percent genetics. Don't let anybody tell you any crap about anything else, because that's what it is: 97 percent genetics and 3 percent just get your ass moving. Because I've never met a cookie I didn't like." I guess when it comes down to it, you'd either be very lucky, follow some completely ridiculous food plan, or just decide not to have a celebrity body and get healthy instead. S'up to you.
