Top 7 fruits and veggies for juicing
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
A couple months ago, Martha was debating whether or not she should invest in a juicer. A valid question. After all, when you prepare your own juice you have complete control over the ingredients. You choose what fruits and veggies you include and you're guaranteed to have no preservatives, no artificial colors, and no sweeteners. When you juice fruits and vegetables you keep all of the vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants found in the fresh produce. You do, however, sacrifice much of the fiber. So while juicing is a healthy practice, it shouldn't take the place of all of your fruits and vegetable intake.
Natural Health lists the top 7 fruits and veggies for juicing. Check out the gallery for the complete list.
What's so great about a juicer?
Every now and then, when I can't sleep, I come across Jack Lalanne and his over-enthusiastic infomercial touting his 'fabulous' juicer, which he in part credits to his longevity. Due to my practical nature, I never buy anything I see on an infomercial (except for the first season of Bewitched!)
But sometimes I think: there are worse things I could spend $100 than a juicer. I'm a big smoothie drinker and sometimes the blender doesn't cut it. Plus, it's a great way to get a big, healthy serving of veggies when I don't particularly feel like scarfing down a big salad. Should I cave and buy a juicer? What do you think?

Jack LaLanne's secrets to longevity
Surely you've seen the infomercials with healthy living spokesperson Jack Lalanne, where he talks about good health and tries to get to buy his juicer. I tell ya, at 91, that guy's got a lot of energy and if the juicer is his secret, sign me up.
Okay, so the juicer isn't the only reason he's a healthy as he is. He also works out every day -- for 2 hours! A brush with a sugar-induced illness that incapacitated him in his teens lead him to the path of healthy eating. These days, he's a vegetarian who gets lots of fruits and veggies and healthy proteins. And of course, lots of exercise. And he can't help but wonder why most people in America treat their cars better than their bodies.
During his long career in the fitness industry, he's opened health clubs, lead us on the path of fitness via the TV and convinced us to get our veggies through the aforementioned infomercial. And he's still going, which at 91 is pretty amazing.
