You don't have to skip dessert

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

If you're looking to lose pounds, chances are the first thing you'll cut out is dessert. After all, eating a bunch of sugar after the biggest meal of the day is probably not the best diet choice, right? But if dessert is your favourite meal of the day, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to eat your sweets and lose weight too. FitSugar recently compiled a list of their favourite light desserts -- plus here are some of mine:

  • Fruit and Light Cool Whip. Three teaspoons of Light Cool Whip has only 35 calories. Pair that with a handful of fresh, healthy, antioxidant-rich berries and you've got a perfect sweet treat.
  • Jello or fat-free pudding. Both are very low-cal and very sweet. Opt for the sugar-free variety and you're consuming virtually no calories.
  • Warm milk with a touch of honey. This one not only satisfies a sweet tooth, it helps you get to sleep too.

What's your favourite healthy sweet treat?

Japanese Slim Tip: no-calorie jello

Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness

The Japanese are notorious for being slim and healthy. This is often credited to a diet rich in veggies and fish and low in sweets and fat. But as our sibling blog Gadling tells us, there's another key to the Japanese waistline: No-calorie Jello. Japanese women and girls who are looking to shed pounds will eat this jelly instead of a meal. And this jelly is easy to come by -- it's available in convenience stores throughout the country.

Jello can be a great thing to eat if you're trying to lose weight--it's a low-cal dessert that's great at satisfying a sweet tooth--but there's no way that eating it as a meal is healthy. Your body needs calories to keep going. Looks like whoever came up with this idea has found a way to make money off of eating disorders. Ick.

Haunted by Halloween treats

Healthy Kids, Nutrition & Supplements

Halloween is upon us. And I'm scared. Not because of ghosts, goblins, witches, and warlocks, though. It's the candy that does it for me -- the sheer excess of sugar that will fill my kids' treat buckets on the night of trick-or-treat. My boys, who will quickly become beggars, will know no limits and will haunt me for weeks with their sweet requests. I haven't yet decided how I'll manage to trash a good portion of the goo my guys will score on this spooky night. But I do know I'd love it if nutritious treats could somehow find a place in the Halloween tradition. Maybe I need to nix the whole door-to-door thing and host my own little healthy hang-out -- complete with these Halloween treats.
  • Organic apples, pears, and other fruits could be provided for easy munching. A little caramel dipping sauce could spice things up a bit.
  • A handful of salt-free pretzels, sesame seeds, whole grain cereal, dried cranberries, and other dried fruits would make a perfect crunchy mix.
  • Seedless grapes added to flavored sugar-free Jello could be the start of one favorite fruity indulgence.
There are many horribly healthy options out there. But will they -- can they -- ever replace what what kids have come to love so much about Halloween? It's the candy that keeps them coming back for more.

It's the candy that keeps me afraid of those knocks on the door.

What 'free' foods can you fill up on?

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

Here's my problem -- I usually eat healthy but when it's bedtime and it's 6 hours since my last meal, I feel hungry and it's awfully hard to sleep with my stomachs grumbling. But late-night eating will not only mess up your sleep, it's also a common time to over-indulge. So what 'free' (meaning calorie-free) foods can I use to quench my hunger?

eDiets recommends a bunch of stuff
like sugar-free gelatin, chewing gum, club soda with a twist of lemon and salad without dressing. They also recommend spacing out your meals so you don't end up ravenous when you go to bed. Of course, if you're not too concerned with calories, you can have something like fruit, frozen yogurt, graham wafers or even a glass of milk before bed. Just make sure you don't eat eat something light and you don't over-indulge.

Load up on these zero-calorie snacks

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

My e-mail inbox was full of promise when I received this article enticing me with calorie-free snacks! Are there even such things as calorie-free snacks? I mean, even chewing gum has calories. Turns out there are a few things that really are calorie-free -- namely, tea and water -- but can you really fill up on these? To a point, I suppose, but if you're having water or tea to replace a meal, you need help.

The other suggestions are not so much calorie-free as they are very low in calories and/or good for you. These items are:

  • Veggies
  • Berries
  • Sugar-free jello (though it does contain processed chemicals)
  • Egg whites
  • Citrus fruits

You could eat these things to your heart's content and not see any significant weight gain, so next time you reach for that bag of chips to fill the mid-afternoon rumblings, remember these items.

Calorie-free foods

Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements

Okay, so the title of this post is misleading. The 'calorie-free' foods listed in this article are not all truly calorie free, but their definitely low in Calories and good enough for you that they're worth consuming a few calories for. Anyway, here's the list of items that you should consume without consequence. Each as much of these as you want, eDiet's claims:

-Hot tea sweetened with splenda
-Berries
-Citrus fruits
-Sugar-free jello with sugar-free, fat free whipped topping
-Egg whites, prepared with calorie-free non-stick spray of course
-Veggies
-Water

I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners and fat-free whipped topping has too many chemicals for my taste, so I'll stick to the fruit, veggies and water. What about you? What guilt-free foods do you snack on?
