No carbs are best for a healthy prostate

Men's Health

Carbs are generally regarded as bad when you're trying to lose weight but ok the rest of the time. But new studies are showing that a diet free of or low in carbs may be best for putting the brakes on the spread of prostate cancer. In a study using mice, it was found that mice who had a high-fat, carb-free diet lived longer than those on a traditional western diet that is high in both fat and carbs.

However, it should be noted that high-fat diets have been said to lead to prostate cancer, even though these findings show that it might help speed up treatment. So, in the meantime, I think moderation is key -- don't cut out healthy carbs like whole grains, and don't load up on unhealthy fats either.

Living with kids increases the fat in your diet

Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements

A new study shows that having children in your home could be hurting your diet, if you're not careful. I think everyone would agree that most "kid friendly" kitchens are stocked with things like hot dogs, mac and cheese, and Oreo cookies. Having these things around makes it easier for the adults in the house to eat them also, not to mention families with young children make more visits to fast food restaurants. One researcher was quoted as saying "Adults pick up foods the kids want, so the kids end up driving the nutrition habits of the household instead of parents." According to the study adults living with children eat an average of 5 more grams of fat per day than someone who doesn't have kids around. That's equal to an extra personal-size pizza each week!

Counter-top ovens - are they worthwhile?

Healthy Products and Reviews, Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Motivation, Nutrition & Supplements

Must have been 1993 or so.

Oh, it was late at night. I was watching television because I couldn't sleep. This chubby guy in a chef's hat comes on the screen - late night infomercial. He is using this magical device called a "Jet Stream Oven." A counter-top oven that will virtually replace your conventional oven.

Oh brother.

To make a long story short - I bought it. Was it just another TV shopping piece of junk? Hardly. I still use one to this day - 13 years later. Can't do without it.
