I think most people would agree that kids need to eat more healthfully. School lunches need to improve, and parents need to make better choices about the items they put in their kids lunch bags.

I wrote a post a while ago about how my son's teacher has banned candy from her classroom, except for special occasions. I thought that was a great rule -- she still allows treats on birthdays and holidays, but on a day-to-day basis, she only wants the kids to bring healthful snacks. A Wisconsin school district, however, has taken the ban even further.

The Neenah School District is requiring that kids bring in fruit, vegetables, or other healthy snacks when they bring in treats for the class. It seems a bit strict to me, and I'd imagine that the kids would be disappointed at first. But, with a little creativity, healthful snacks can be fun, too.

Sabrina Bryan, one-third of The Cheetah Girls recording act, really sets a positive, healthy role example for young girls. She's fit, toned, and at an appropriate weight. What's more, she clearly enjoys staying fit -- especially through one of her first loves ... dancing.

Bryan previously released a fitness DVD titled BYou. She shared a video of her top five fit tips with People Magazine:
  • Do cardio. Bryan loves to dance, but any form of cardio you enjoy will do.
  • Hit the dance floor. Even if it isn't your first choice of cardio, hit the dance floor and try different styles of dance, like Bryan did while on Dancing With the Stars.
  • Try Pilates. Bryan does Pilates for strength and toning.
  • Start swimming. Bryan recommends finding a pool or beach where you can swim outside in the sun.
  • Eat healthy snacks. Her favorites include string cheese, apples, and almonds.

carrots and almond butterYep, big business is all over this one, as usual. Now the the major food companies are packaging 100 calorie snacks in ready-to-go packaging, we may be forgetting that there is usually not much nutrition contained in those 100 calories.

Even though they are convenient, they still may not be a good choice, and they definitely are not the best choice.
