Health Conscious People - Do They Eat Foods They Hate?

Nutrition & Supplements

When you hear about people who are health nuts, you might imagine them choking down bitter-tasting leaves and weird juicer concoctions they can barely stomach. And this image might be actually true.

Recent surveys out of Britain show that most health-conscious people regularly eat foods they hate because they're good for them. In fact, one-third eat at least one thing they hate each week.

People, it doesn't have to be this way. There are literally thousands of foods out there that are good for you. Life is too short to to be gulping down what you can't stand, so do yourself a favour and find something equally nutritious that you actually like.

I'm curious to know ...

Do you eat foods you hate just because they're good for you?

Exercise - You Know You Love It

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

woman stretching
As much as we fitness writers want to make exercise out to be awesome (!) and fun (!) and other exclamation-point inducing adjectives, that's not always the honest truth. For many people, exercise is nothing but a pain in the rear. Even if you know all the benefits of exercise and how necessary it is for good health, there are times that you'd much rather plop on the couch and watch TV.

I'll admit that I used to feel that way. Then, several years ago I started trying to lose weight. I forced myself to exercise every day and, other than the gratifying sense of accomplishment I felt when it was done, I hated every minute of it. A couple of months later, I had a really stressful day at work. When I got home, I wanted to exercise. Somehow, amidst all my "hating" exercise, I had learned to use my workout to relieve stress. Totally weird, because usually I turned to chocolate when I was stressed out. That's when I began loving exercise -- I finally realized that as I was working out, the physical activity was working for me.

If you're exercising while hating it like I was, keep at it and try some positive self talk while waiting for your workout epiphany. Ashley Tisdale admits that she hated going to the gym. Now she says: "Before I work out, I think, 'I love exercise' -- and it works." Take a tip from the High School Musical actress and fake it until you make it. And remember to find activities you can enjoy ... it really makes a difference.

Debra Messing hates to exercise

Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment

Actress Debra Messing complains beginning the second she arrives for her workouts. Her trainer tells her he's never met anyone in his entire career who hates exercise more than she does.

Anyone share this former Will & Grace star's hatred? If so, you might want to do what she does -- turn on some tunes. Music soothes Messing's grumbles. It does the job for non-celebrity Sophia Dembling too. Check out her story over at Health.com.

5 workout tips for people who hate to exercise

Fitness, Motivation

Hate to exercise? It happens to the best of us! Just because it's something everybody should be doing doesn't mean it's something everybody likes doing. But hating exercise makes it pretty tough to live a healthy lifestyle, so if you or someone you know is struggling with this issue try these 5 tips for exercise haters:
  • Use technology to get yourself motivated. Either put on music that you love to get you in the mood, or try an audio training program -- they're available now for everything from cardio and calisthenics to pilates and yoga.
  • Try bellydancing! Or any other interesting "outside of the box" class you may find that sparks your interest.
  • Instead of trying to walk or jog for 30 minutes at once try doing 15 before work and the other 15 at lunch or right after work. The smaller timeframe may make it seem like less of a chore.
  • Try Leslie Sanson's Walk Away the Pounds video program -- it's converted many an exercise hater.
  • Find a fitness class that has a mind/body fitness approach. There are traditional options like yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi, plus more modern ideas like yoga/Pilates combination classes.
These ideas from eDiets sound pretty good, but it seems finding a way around "hating to exercise" is more complicated than any 5 tips can solve. What do you do to make exercising fun, interesting, or at least tolerable?

Q. Fitz, I've been so busy and so tired lately. I'm eating well, but haven't broken a sweat in over a month! As a result I've gained six pounds. Help! Josh.

A. Hey Josh. As I write this....I've just completed the most excruciating workout of my life. Not that it was the most physically tough. I jogged three miles; which is not usually a tough run for me. I promise I have never done anything more miserable though. I didn't want to get off of my lazy butt, and do anything. Especially work out! I had planned to work out though, and all I could think about was all of the wonderful people I've come across which I have told, "Suck it up, and do it anyway". So...I did.

First obstacle was getting dressed. Hated that. Next obstacle was getting out the door. Somehow that happened too. Then! I get on the treadmill. Ugh! I wanted to break it instead of use it. My feet felt like bricks in my shoes for the first half mile, and the thought of quitting crossed my mind at least a million times. But I didn't!

Workplace Fitness: Job burnout vs. your health

Motivation

If you love going to work everyday that's awesome, but unfortunately you are a minority. More people than not are doing the "work to live" thing, and feel stressed out and unhappy about their job pretty regularly. Whether you're not getting paid enough, you've got a pile of stressful projects coming due, or you just picked the completely wrong field for yourself, burning out on the job is a serious problem -- for both your career and your health.

Realizing you have a problem...Hate to use a cheesy cliché, but the first thing you have to do is acknowledge that you're burning out at work. It's a vicious downward spiral, and you can't climb out unless you make a conscious effort towards change. So what signs should you be watching for?
