Go Hard with Fast and Aggresive Music
I was recently interviewed for the website GoHealthyGoFit about my favorite training music. I'm the type of sport who loves to go all out when I train. Hitting the wall elates me, and music plays a vital role in helping get that far.
You can find my list here along with a few others. (The article follows the photo of me shown here on the right.)The music I list is both fast and aggressive, which is really perfect for the things I love to do. Kickboxing, running, weight training, and more.
"Scarred" is by far my favorite, because I always loved to listen to it before a fight. "Go Away," is awesome for tough training but also makes me giggle. The article includes links, so you can have a listen to each song on my list. "Go Away" will probably make you giggle too.

Love Your Body Day -- I love my abs
Today is the big day. The day when I can officially shout from the rooftops, or at least from my laptop: "I love my abs!" I'm in the midst of writing my new cookbook, The Everything Flat Abs Cookbook, and I had to prepare for a photo shoot of, yes, my abs. I worked my tail off, ate with great discipline, and now I have proof of my efforts.
I know I'm the fitness expert chic, and I'm "supposed" to have great abs. But honestly, that gift didn't come with my degree. It certainly wasn't a guarantee after having two babies either. So now I have proof. I've taken part in many photo shoots but have never singled out this section of my body. Not only do I think they look pretty decent, but I imagine they'll give people more incentive to believe my advice as well.
Proof is in the pudding, and today my abs are my dessert.
Step up workouts with sand and surf
For a 150-pound woman, Health Magazine experts report that two to three times more energy is required to walk on the beach than on a hard surface. Women, you'll burn 82 more calories per hour by hoofing it on the sand compared to pounding the pavement. And if you're like me, you'll cover more ground at the beach as you ambitiously trek in one direction, only to realize the return trip is just as long.
Oh, and that frozen daiquiri you dream of sipping when your sandy excursion is complete: 112 calories.

How magazines make us fat
Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Celebs & Entertainment, Nutrition & Supplements
In the same magazine, there's a recipe for chocolate cupcakes topped with chocolate frosting and a lollipop too. There's more -- macaroni & cheese; sweet, salty, and crunchy granola bars; waffles; Rice Krispies Treats; and creamy salad dressings. Then, readers learn how to lose a quick five pounds. Hey, I have an idea -- how about not eating anything splashed all over the ads?
Maybe it's how magazines stay in business -- by fattening up the audience and then enticing them into setting hard-to-reach diet and exercise goals. And so readers never make progress and keep coming back for more, sure one day to find the magic fix for looking and feeling good. The funny thing is, there is a fix. It's just not magical. Eat less than you burn. Or burn more than you eat. Either way, it's simple. So I say, enjoy your women's magazines. Just ignore the food ads and heed most of the diet and fitness advice. Then, you'll be on the right track.
Getting over a break-up isn't impossible, it's just really, really hard
I've always found goodbyes very sad and really difficult, and parting with a boyfriend has always been the most difficult kind of goodbye. Whether you're the breaker or the breakee -- or even if the break up is totally mutual, ending a relationship is painful. Recently Brian White wrote a post regarding a study with results that showed breaking up isn't actually that hard to do. It makes me wonder who was participating in the study -- robots perhaps that weren't programed to have feelings?
I know everyone has different experiences and I suppose that for some people, breaking up isn't that big of a deal but for everyone I know it pretty much just sucks. I agree with the author of this piece who discusses how the worst part of breaking up is all of the analysis that goes on in your head in the weeks and even months after you've ended things with your partner. Questions like "Did I do the right thing?", "What if I'd done a, b or c differently?" and "If things were so great at first, what happened to change everything?" can be torturous to someone suffering from post-break up blues.
I think the only saving grace is keeping in mind that pretty much everyone you know has been where you are and made it through, and likely you've been there before too. It may be difficult in the here and now, but try to remember that in time you'll look back and wonder why you were so upset in the first place.
Ten foods that are hard to digest
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
Knowing your favorite foods rank high on a list of tough edibles can be a bit hard to digest sometimes (pun intended). But seriously, did they have to tell us that chocolate, ice cream AND mashed potatoes sit among the top ten foods that are hard to digest? You may be wondering how in the world mashed potatoes got there, but in fact this comfort food is loaded with milk. That means lactose intolerant people won't find them very easy to absorb. What about citrus juices? Believe it or not these juices can also throw a wrench in the digestive process. Irritating the esophagus, causing a stomach ache or inducing diarrhea could be the result of having citrus at the wrong time.
Don't worry though, this isn't meant to deter anyone from consuming broccoli or sugar-free gum (yes, both of these are also on the list!). Some people may just find it interesting if they experience these symptoms after eating, so check out the rest of the information to learn more.
Are you working out hard enough? Try using the Talk Test,
Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Nutrition & Supplements, Men's Health
A common challenge of exercise is figuring out how hard you should work. There are a few options to calibrate the ideal effort you should be putting forth, but most require too much math to make them great mid-workout options. I like the Keep It Simple Stupid version called the Talk Test.
For the average healthy individual who is trying to improve overall fitness, including cardiovascular and lung capacity, these are the rules.
- If you can have a full blown conversation during an aerobic workout you should be working harder.
- If you can't talk at all, even to scream "help!", you are working too hard.
- If you are huffing and puffing, but still have enough wind to tell your partner or trainer, "I can't wait to get this over with"...your pace is juuuuuust right.
Daily Fit Tip: The more you stink, the better you'll be
Healthy Aging, Healthy Habits, Womens Health, Daily Fit Tip, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Men's Health
If you're trying to lose weight or significantly improve your fitness level, I have one simple rule for you. The stinkier you end up......the better! I see too many folks strolling along on the treadmill or coasting lamely on bikes. They look comfortable and comfort does not lead to improvement. You don't have to be a jock to do work hard, you just have to your personal best.
Next time you go for a workout, see how gross you can get. Challenge yourself! In order to improve you must look red-faced, nasty haired, flaunt all sorts of icky wet patches on your clothing and carry an odor nobody would care to be subjected to. If you've accomplished these things, you've probably done a lot of huffing and puffing and burned a zillion calories. Mmmmm. I love the stench of success!
