Healthy recipe: Black bean and tomato quinoa

Diet & Weight Loss, Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements

quinoa and tomato side dishAre you all getting that I love quinoa yet? Well, why wouldn't I, when it is such a healthy source of protein, is versatile and very easy to prepare.

My latest quinoa recipe find is Black Bean and Tomato Quinoa, touted as a side dish on Epicurious, but to me, a perfect vegetarian entree when served with a green salad and some whole grain bread.

This flavorful dish sports quinoa and black beans as hearty and nutritious sources of protein, zesty lime, the powerhouse tomato and scallions and fresh cilantro.

Fitzness Food: Field Greens Salad with Grilled Salmon

Besides the different things we do and wear from season to season, the foods we eat vary dramatically as well. The snow keeps hearty stews on the stove and hot drinks in our hands. The summer however, propels us to brew ice cold tea and lighten up a little at mealtime. I found a recipe I like a lot from the book Delicious Disney, The Disney Chefs with Pam Brandon.

The Field Greens Salad with Grilled Salmon just feels right this time of year. It's a delicious dish you can gobble up tonight and not pay the price in your swimsuit tomorrow. I've placed it on page 38 of my recipe book on Fitzness.com. Enjoy!

Q. Hey Fitz. I'm heading out for a week's vacation on a cruise ship next month, and worried that once again I'll gain almost ten pounds while gone. That's what I've done the last few times I've gone on a cruise. How can I get around it? There is awesome food everywhere! Susan.

A. Susan, Susan, Susan. I'm shaking my head. The deal with vacations, cruises especially, is that they're a time for you to relax, get away from the daily grind and have some fun. Pigging out and gorging are simply not what you should be focusing on...wherever you are! Yes, there is a lot of tasty food on cruise ships. There is also a lot of yummy things available at your local grocery store every single day! That doesn't' mean you should run through the aisles like a lunatic shoving everything you can get your hands on into your mouth. Just because food is THERE, just because food is FREE, doesn't mean you have to eat it.

The best cities for foodies

Nutrition & Supplements

While I'm just as comfortable eating Mac n' Cheese as I am Filet Mignon, I would call myself a 'foodie' because I have a definite appreciation for fine food and drink. I credit my parents, who exposed me to fine foods at an early age. There's even a much-loved family picture of me at age 4 eating caviar.

Food is one of the best things about travelling, and though the large Canadian city I call home has a great selection of restaurants, there's definitely a better choice of eateries in some more cultured cities. Reuters has come up with this list of the top 10 cities for foodies:
  1. NYC, USA
  2. Las Vegas, USA
  3. Los Angeles, USA
  4. Paris, France
  5. Bologna, Italy
  6. Singapore
  7. Palermo, Sicily
  8. Barcelona, Spain
  9. London, England
  10. Sydney, Australia
I've been to most of these cities, and would agree -- mostly (food in Barcelona was hit or miss, but I suppose good food could be found if you knew where to look.) What do you think?
