Q. Hi Fitz, We're half way through December and I've already gained four pounds. How do I stop this? Colin
A. Happy Holidays, Colin! Thanks for writing. I've got some pretty clear advice for you, which is the same advice I'd give if you showed up for a personal training session with me. Get a grip! Put a moratorium on the indulgences and focus on fighting that new fat.
The Big Four might be all you need
Joey was quick with his response: "Push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups, and jumping rope."
No need for a fancy gym, says Coach, when you've got your own body and a few essentials, like a pull-up bar and a jump rope. He's right, you know. We've got the tools to work our bodies right at our disposal. We just need to get working.

Carrots for breakfast
Healthy Kids, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Motivation, Nutrition & Supplements
This morning rocked. Not because I got to sleep in late, cause I didn't. This morning rocked because my four year old daughter climbed into bed with me, and asked if she could have some baby carrots for breakfast. Ahhh! That's what makes this fitness trainer Mommy giddy with glee.
I recently lectured at her preschool and spent time directing parents to make great choices for their children, because of both the short term and long term benefits. I preached that if we consistently offer the truly 'good stuff' to our kids, they will eventually choose it for themselves. Both of my children regularly request fruits and veggies, but carrots in the morning gets the gold prize.
Will chatting for hours on your cell cause hearing loss?
Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products
A small study of 100 participants conducted by the chairman of the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, India found long-term cell phone users who chatted on their mobile for an hour or more a day, were more likely to suffer from high-frequency hearing loss.
Users who had their phones for four years or more were most effected, while those who had only had their mobiles for two years were less likely to have problems. According to the article, those suffering from high-frequency hearing loss have trouble hearing consonants like s, f, t and z.
It's important to keep in mind though, that the study is small and the researcher who conducted it points out that a much larger study and more research needs to be done before any definitely links or conclusions can be drawn. So don't panic, but maybe try not to chat on your phone for hours on end either.
Dieting 4 days at a time
Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products
It's about motivation, and the fact that it's really hard to get (or stay) excited about something when you don't have tangible results for your efforts. Martha Beck,PhD seems to think that 4 days is the magic amount of time needed to start successfully on a weight loss plan. She says it's not so long (like a week) that it's too hard to stick to it, but it's just long enough to start seeing the results of your labors -- which will in turn inspire the motivation needed to continue.I haven't read her book on this subject, The Four Day Win, but in reading what she has to say about the basic principles it makes perfect sense. Some of it is based on setting realistic and specific goals, planning out rewards, and even writing out and signing a contract. These are all things I've heard of before, and throwing in a "baby steps" idea sounds like a good plan to me.
My Florida Gators win second straight NCAA basketball title and teach life lesson

Last night I watched and cheered as my Alma mater's basketball team won the Big Dance. Again! It was a spectacular feat which was well earned. I've had the luxury to sit court-side at many games this year, and as wonderful as they look on television, they're even more impressive in person. I have tons of respect for this team.
The Gators are composed of incredible athletes who play selflessly every second of every game. Each Gator works hard in the gym and on the court more for the guy next to him than for himself. They are quick, agile, strong and smart. Each player is a coach's dream. Since they play for one another, they never made excuses or trained half way.
If you're looking for fitness role models, the Gators are it. If you're a parent, child, or spouse choose your precious family members as your "team". Pursue fitness as desperately as this magical team pursued two national titles in a row. You have the ability to live a champion's life of longevity and health if you put your mind to it. Live to truly enjoy your golden years with the special people in your life, and allow them to enjoy you.
