7 ways to avoid a fall

Fitness

Did you know that falls are the top cause of injury and death for the elderly in the United States? According to the American Geriatric Society, that is, in fact, the case. What might surprise you even more is that most of these falls occur in the home.

Fortunately, there are many steps you can take to protect yourself or a loved one from taking a dangerous spill. Because every home is different, it's a good idea to take a walk through the home in question with the specific purpose of checking for possible dangers.

Click through the gallery to see the seven tips given by the American Geriatric Society, and feel free to leave a comment if you have other suggestions!

Forbes' best shoes for your sport

Best Shoes for Your Sport(click thumbnails to view gallery)

Forbes published some tips for choosing the best sneakers for your sport, and to be honest, I found it a bit lacking. They covered a lot of running and outdoor sports, but some of the sports for which shoes are really important (like volleyball and basketball) were totally left off.

I did a little research and added what sounded like the best shoes for those sports. However, it's important to remember your sport-specific needs when shopping for a shoe. If you will be making quick, side-to-side movements, you'll need different support than you would for running a marathon. If you really don't know what you need, try to find a store that specializes in your sport and ask for help. The right shoes might not make you a better athlete, but they will make your sport more enjoyable.

Shoe shopping 101

Fashion and Beauty, Reviews & Products

Some of you probably think you know it all when it comes to shoe shopping. Well, Forbes recently gave out some tips on the best ways to shop for sneakers, and I think you'll be surprised at some of their suggestions.

  • Find a good retailer. If you're a runner, check out a running store -- they will likely be better able to diagnose your shoe needs than a college kid working at Champs.

  • Know your foot (or find someone who does). If you're flatfooted, you'll be likely to overpronate, whereas if you have high arches, you'll probably underpronate. Again, this is where a knowledgeable salesperson will be most helpful.

America's sexiest cities

Diet & Weight Loss

What makes a city sexy? The first things that pop into my mind are things like lots of sun, sand, and buff physiques dressed in skimpy swimwear. But that's not really what this list is about -- instead we're looking at the American cities that don't necessarily look the sexiest, but feel the sexiest instead. Or, as Forbes (who compiled the list) says, feel the most "lustful." (Yeah, I should have called this post "America's Horniest Cities!")

Anyway, who do you think came out on top of the list? Forbes took into account things like contraceptive and condom sales in the nation's 50 biggest cities to determine who is having the most sex -- do you think a buff-beach-body town landed as #1? Think again -- good 'ol Denver CO is in first place, followed by San Antonio, TX and Portland, OR tied for 2nd. Surprised? I am, actually! See the rest of the top lustful cities (and let us know if you're lucky enough to live in one!):
