broken foot fitzQ. Hi Fitz. My wife and I had been doing a fantastic job of getting into shape, but then I sprained my foot and she got pregnant. Our daughter is nine months old now, and it's still really hard for us to find time to go the gym in the evenings. I've got a gut but and my wife thinks I'm smokin', so I'm not really concerned about weight loss. I do worry about my cardiovascular fitness, though. It's not unusual for my heart rate to top 100 BPM while I'm just sitting working at my desk, and that's pretty much all I do all day.

Because of my sprained foot (it's healed, but prone to re-injury), the treadmill is not recommended but the rowing machine is fine. I've recently started going to the gym on my lunch hour a couple of times a week, but I only end up getting about 20 minutes actually working out. If I plan well, I could probably stretch that to 30 minutes. What should I be doing to get maximum bang for my buck in terms of cardiovascular fitness? I want to have the endurance to keep up with my daughter as she grows up, and I want to be around a long time after that as well. Mike

A. Thanks for the super question, Mike! I broke my foot and tore soft tissues in a very bad way a couple of years ago, so I can completely identify with your situation. (Photo of me with my sexy cast on right.) I got stuck on a kayaking machine for months, which was mental torture for me, but like you, I was dedicated to my cardiovascular health. How often do you exercise? I used to train six days a week with one day of rest, but because of the tumor in my foot, I am limited to working out every other day.

What type of exercise do you do? Rollerblading, mountain biking and lifting weights. On a good day, I play beach volleyball.

What gets you to work out, even when you're feeling lazy? I just convince myself that no matter the pain or how I feel that the end results justify the means, Plus I know that after a workout i feel so much better all around.

Plantar Fasciitis - Do the Tips Work?

footA few weeks ago, I wrote about the problems I've been having with plantar fasciitis. I hadn't been to see a doctor yet, but based my the symptoms, I was quite certain plantar fasciitis is what I'm dealing with. My pain was typically worse in the mornings after I worked out -- to the point that walking was difficult until things loosened up for me.

Since I wrote my original post, I've tried out some tips. All in all, I think they're helping. I've been able to wake up the morning after working out and (aaah, aaah the angels sing), I can actually walk. There's still some pain, but it's not nearly as bad. Check out the gallery for details.

Plantar Fasciitis - How to Stay Active When Your Feet are Killing You

motion control shoesI overpronate, so my workout shoes wear out rather quickly. Recently, I made the cardinal sin of fitness buffs and tried to wear my shoes long after they needed to be replaced. Six months later, I'm paying the price. While I'm not 100 percent positive that I have plantar fasciitis, the symptoms certainly point to it. For example, the morning after a long workout, I feel like someone is jabbing knives up my feet. A new pair of shoes and a trip to the doctor are in my near future.

Plantar fasciitis is caused by straining the ligament that supports the arch of your foot. While it's painful, plantar fasciitis doesn't need to put you on the sidelines. Some tips:

  • Buy good shoes. Shoes are not something to skimp on. Look for shoes with good arch support or consider motion control shoes if you overpronate.
  • Stretch. Do calf stretches and towel stretches several times a day.
  • Avoid hard surfaces. If you're a runner or a walker, try moving your workout to an indoor track. Cement and other hard surfaces may aggravate your pain.
  • Try new exercises. Swimming won't aggravate plantar fasciitis and other activities -- such as biking -- may be easier for you.

Stinky Feet? See Ya!

It's inevitable. You go to the gym before work, shower, and put on your slip-on shoes. But then, halfway through the day, there's a distinct funk coming from beneath your desk -- you've got some stinky feet!

There are few feelings that can compare with walking barefoot through the grass on a warm, summer day. I don't know about you, but as a kid I shunned shoes as much as possible -- as a matter of fact, I'm still barefoot a good deal of the time.

While it's fun to go around barefoot, it can also be dangerous. The American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons has released a series of barefoot safety tips that any sandal shunner should take the time to read. Jumpstart Your Fitness: By having happier feet

Feet are, in my opinion at least, one of the single ugliest parts of the human body. That doesn't, however, mean they're not important. They're so important, in fact, that if they're not healthy and well taken care of, the whole rest of the body suffers.

How well do you treat your feet? If you're like most people, probably not so well. Most people stand on them too long while wearing shoes that are too tight and heels that are too high, all the while expecting their feet to go everywhere they want to go every day without giving them any care at all really -- until there's a problem of course. When I was about 35 pounds heavier, I used to think about my body all the time. I was constantly fretting over the parts I didn't like, wondering how I was going to change, stressing over food and agonizing over clothes. I was all-consumed. I spent so much time thinking about my body, that I kind of lost track of the more important things in life. I certainly must have been far less productive and thoughtful to others than I am now as well.

Throughout my fitness journey, which truly began when I started teaching group fitness classes at 15 years old....I have had many great and not-so-great moments with my body. I even enjoyed a few great years in my teens as a bulimic. Whoopee! (That was really the low point.) Having said that. Along the way, I've learned to enjoy a variety of challenging exercises and balance my fitness. I also learned to appreciate and enjoy produce more than Cheetos. I got a grip on eating right and now I never fret at all over what I put in my mouth. I simply make great choices most of the time.

Aside from being ugly, are calluses a problem?

Spring is approaching, and I hope your first thought is, "Yahoo! I can't wait to get outside and bust my butt doing all kinds of active, outdoorsy things!" However, some of you might also be thinking, "Oh, jeez. There's no way I can wear sandals right now -- my feet are all callused up from the miles I've put in on the treadmill this winter."

The fact is that many active men and women find themselves with serious calluses on their feet. And, while they're a sign that we've worked really hard, they're also unsightly. There are a couple schools of thought about calluses, one being that calluses are a natural shock absorber for your foot. Therefore, some athletes want to keep their calluses.

Are cold showers good for your health, or bad?

I love hot showers -- probably a little hotter than is good for me actually. I don't know that I have taken an actual cold shower ever, although often in the summer months I'll take what I'd call "cool" ones. But aside from all the jokes that guys make about 'needing a cold shower,' have you ever thought of taking one for your health? Or how about instead of a cold shower a cold foot soak? This interesting article over at Natural Health suggests that alternating cold and warm foot soaks is like a mini strength-training session for your insides. The cold water (around 70º) constricts and tightens vessels, while the warm water (around 100º) loosens and expands them. Asking them to adjust quickly makes them stronger.

I'm guessing alternating cool and warm showers would do the same thing, but obviously that's not so easy. So are you buying this? The science seems sound enough to me, but then it also strikes me as more than a little unnatural.

What's your arch type?

Do you know what kind of arch you have? Want to find out? Just dip your foot in water and step on a paper bag. Then look closely at your footprint.

If you're flat-footed or have a low arch, you'll see your entire footprint. If you have a high arch, you'll see a thin line between the ball and heel print. If you have a neutral or normal arch, your print will look like a half moon.

So what's your type? Whatever it is, make sure you use this information next time you go shopping for the perfect workout shoe. Different shoes support different arches -- so be sure to find the shoe that's just right for you.

After the workout, check those feet

Here's a habit you might want to incorporate into your workout routine -- checking your feet. Sound a little odd?

Once your workout is complete and you strip off those shoes and socks, make sure you look at every nook and cranny on those stinky pinkies. This practice might just help you identify suspicious moles that may lead to skin cancer.

Melanoma of the foot is the deadliest type of skin cancer because it's rarely caught early. So look at the top, the bottom, and the sides of your feet. Check your toes, your nail beds -- take off that toenail polish, ladies, and really look -- and then take a peek at your legs.

Taking a closer look at common foot myths

Think you can't walk on a broken foot? How about trying to relieve ingrown toenail pain by cutting into your toenail? Those and other myths are being dispelled in a new report from foot experts.

Are bunions caused by those new shoes (or old ones)? Not according to foot surgeons, who blame those painful foot issues with the genetics that cause faulty foot structures in the first place.

It's interesting to see that 19 out of the 26 bones in your feet are in the toes themselves, and specialized surgeons are sometimes the only ones who can help correct foot deformities (as slight as they may be) and other issues that you may be blaming on other factors.

Q. I feel like a 'treat-aholic'. How do I cut out junk food forever? Mary-Kate

A. Hey Mary-Kate. Thanks for the question. Treats are tasty, but they take their toll. Don't they? I'm not an extreme kind of trainer. I normally recommend keeping the not-so-good for you snacks to under ten percent of your daily consumption. Can you do that? Would you be able to ensure that throughout the day you choose plenty of fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and non-caloric beverages? If so...just pick one favorite treat per day and enjoy the heck out of it.

If though, having one treat sends you on a binger...you may want to gradually cut them out almost completely. I imagine you have a specific list of 'treats' you prefer each day. Make a detailed list of them and then set your goal to delete one each week. For example. Your treats may tend to be: muffin in the morning, chips at lunch, 100 calorie snack pack of cookies in the afternoon, and frozen yogurt after dinner.

Start by ditching the morning muffin. Replace it with Light Wheat toast and sugar free preserves to let you start the day with something sweet yet healthy. Do the same for the rest of your treats weekly, and you'll slowly wean yourself away. And just FYI, I believe in having cake on your birthday. Cutting anything out 100% often leads to insanity. Don't do that to yourself. My best to you, Fitz.
