Flip flops may foil summer safety
Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment
Not only are Victoria's Secret FitFlops not likely to pump up your fitness level, they're actually prone to throwing you off your stride, causing pain in your lower legs and feet. This, according to a study released last week and presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Sports Medicine in Indianapolis, comes after experts observed 39 college-age men and women walking on a special platform wearing flip-flops and then walking across the same platform wearing athletic shoes. The platform measured stride length and vertical force. The bottom line: Flip-flops, unlike sneakers, cause shorter strides and require heels to hit the ground with less vertical force. This altered gait explains some lower leg and foot problems in people who often sport flip-flops, like college students.
If you're worried about pain in your own legs or feet, take this common-sense advice: Limit the use of flip-flops. Replace them every three to four months too, just like you'd do with athletic shoes. And perhaps rethink your trip to Victoria's Secret for those Fit, and albeit very cute, Flops.
Toned legs just a flip flop away
Get longer, leaner-looking legs just by walking around, say the folks at Victoria's Secret. Just buy their FitFlops and you'll burn calories and tone legs with every step. Engineered to engage muscles, lessen joint impact, and absorb shock, these flipper floppers can apparently accomplish the following fitness feats.
- Strengthen and tone muscles in the feet, legs, buttocks, stomach, and back
- Absorb shock on the feet, knees, and back
- Tone and trim the thighs, calves, and glutes
- Recreate the gait of barefoot walking with a built-in micro-wobbleboard workout-enhancing effect
- Improve balance and posture

Q. I feel like a 'treat-aholic'. How do I cut out junk food forever? Mary-Kate
A. Hey Mary-Kate. Thanks for the question. Treats are tasty, but they take their toll. Don't they? I'm not an extreme kind of trainer. I normally recommend keeping the not-so-good for you snacks to under ten percent of your daily consumption. Can you do that? Would you be able to ensure that throughout the day you choose plenty of fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and non-caloric beverages? If so...just pick one favorite treat per day and enjoy the heck out of it.
If though, having one treat sends you on a binger...you may want to gradually cut them out almost completely. I imagine you have a specific list of 'treats' you prefer each day. Make a detailed list of them and then set your goal to delete one each week. For example. Your treats may tend to be: muffin in the morning, chips at lunch, 100 calorie snack pack of cookies in the afternoon, and frozen yogurt after dinner.
Start by ditching the morning muffin. Replace it with Light Wheat toast and sugar free preserves to let you start the day with something sweet yet healthy. Do the same for the rest of your treats weekly, and you'll slowly wean yourself away. And just FYI, I believe in having cake on your birthday. Cutting anything out 100% often leads to insanity. Don't do that to yourself. My best to you, Fitz.

Bouncy house keeps kids off the couch

Today I'm so excited and feeling a tad genius because of the spectacular new gift I bought for my daughter's fourth birthday and son's second. A bounce house. My kids have always loved to bounce, jump and flip. They've both grown up in my gym and have spent countless hours on BOSUs and mini-trampolines. They've also spent hours each week playing at the local gymnastics school, so purchasing this bounce house seemed like a great idea. It only cost $200 to own, and the one day rental on the huge bouncers was $150.
Here's my genius move though. I made my husband blow it up inside our home! Sadly enough, we don't actually own official dining room furniture yet. It's only been four years since we built this house, and all of our money has been poured into these two little people since. Fancy dinner furniture has not yet made its way. Nonetheless! The 9 X 12 X 6 foot bounce house fit perfectly! They love it, and they use it all day. The benefits are endless. They leave me alone for a while. They get plenty of exercise. They leave me alone. They don't fight over toys. They leave me alone. They screech and laugh a ton. They leave me alone. They conk out for naps and night time easily and sleep like logs. And did I mention they leave me alone? Kids adore these things, and they make much better babysitters than any DVD. :) For more ideas on keeping kids fit visit KidsHealth.Org.
