Kids show dramatic mental improvement after taking Omega-3 supplements
Healthy Kids, Nutrition & Supplements
Are all those nutritional supplements really helping mental development? If a new study is correct, then the answer is "yes" in a huge way. Researchers reported just over the last part of last week that the brains of children underwent three years of actual physical development when given dietary supplements for just three months. The tests in the study involved kids from age 8 to 13 who were given two doses of fish oil supplements (Omega-3 oils with DHA and EPA, most likely). These kids were studies and results concluded that improvements in reading, concentration, memory and problem-solving skills all were verifiable results.
This is quite a study, and the scientists who participated in it were quite amazed by the results. One of the scientists said that "It was as if these were the brains of children three years older. It means you have more connections and greater density of nerve cells, in the same way that a tree grows more branches."
Mayo Clinic study busts myth on anti-aging DHEA products
Alternative & Green Health, Nutrition & Supplements
DHEA, a steroid hormone that has been billed for quite a while as a "fountain of youth" in many circles has yet another detractor. This time, the nemesis comes in the form of a new study from the Mayo Clinic, one of the most highly-respected medical establishments in the U.S. from many respects. The Mayo study determined that DHEA pills and skin patches did not deliver a shred of anti-aging *anything* when administered to older men and women, who are often the recipients of DHEA therapies designed to slow down the aging process and delay the onset of anything related to aging.
DHEA is a steroid made inside the human body that is a precursor to the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen. The rapid decline in DHEA production after age 25 makes the natural steroid wanted worldwide by people above age 40 for its perceived marketed benefits as rejuvenating agents. Sales of DHEA in the U.S. last year hit the $50 level.
