How to Change Trainers
At the start of the new year, you were super excited to get in a workout groove. You set some goals and hired a trainer to help you meet them. And, while your trainer is definitely holding you accountable, maybe something is missing -- it's not quite the relationship you signed up for. What do you do?According to Fitness magazine, your best bet is to dump him or her, face to face. Jodyne Speyer, the author of Dump 'Em, suggests you tell them their style isn't what you're looking for and you'd like to give another trainer a try, adding, "This is a professional relationship, and you don't owe more of an explanation." In other words, don't get all sappy, and don't pull any lame lines or turn on the waterworks.
If you can't quite bring yourself to do that, a small lie isn't so bad -- you could say your schedule has changed, or that you'd rather have a trainer of the opposite sex. Just make sure you follow through -- don't say that, and then meet up with another female trainer at the same time at the same gym! As a last resort, you could talk to the gym manager, but unless you've had an actual problem with your trainer, you need to make sure you're not placing blame. No need to get any one in trouble, right?

Overweight Women Face Unexpected Risks
Women who are overweight face many health risks, such as heart disease and type II diabetes. And Martha recently told us how overweight women tend to be more impulsive. But overweight women face some risks you might not expect: - Being fired. Could it be because people who are overweight have a higher rate of absenteeism? Or is it because of a prejudice? It's hard to pinpoint the reasons why, but medical research shows that overweight women run a higher risk of losing their jobs.
- Being the victim of a crime. Overweight women run a greater risk of being victims of crimes. They're also more likely to become criminals.
- Financial woes. Overweight women are more likely to find themselves broke.
It's a chicken and the egg situation, really. Is a woman's weight causing these negative life events or are the negative events causing stress that leads to overeating and obesity?

Firefighters face higher risk of bladder cancer
Firefighters are known for their bravery. Their job description includes risking their own safety for the sake of others. But it turns out that forging into raging fires isn't the only danger firefighters face. Frequent exposure to smoke and chemical fumes puts them at higher risk of certain diseases, including bladder cancer. A research team tested over 1,000 active and retired firefighters. Ninety-nine of the firefighters exhibited warning signs of bladder cancer, and two were diagnosed with the disease. The overall incidence rate of bladder cancer for firefighters was 36 of 100,000 -- which is higher than the general population.

Living Well: Healthy Tip #5
Healthy Habits, Healthy Home, Diet & Weight Loss
For several days now, I've been writing an ongoing series of diet and fitness posts titled "Why the Pounds Are Sticking Around," which are a collection of tips sourced from the health magazine Self. Since the response has been so positive, I decided to forge ahead with an idea I had for a series of healthy living posts. Since exercise and training are more my forte, I sought out information from an outside source -- Men's Health magazine. To that end, I found ten great health and wellness tips that I thought would be perfect for pieces on healthy living.
So, just as I have been doing with the diet and fitness posts, I will also be posting one healthy living tip per day as part of a series I think I'm going to call "Living Well." I think you'll find these tips to be as interesting and as helpful as I did.
Healthy Tip #5 - Don't let lint become flint
For the most part, this is something directed more at the guys than the girls. Even though us fellas like to think we could handle any crisis situation, sometimes our lack of at-home know-how is what gets us in trouble in the first place. Case in point: Dryer lint.
Honestly, I didn't even know this stuff was flammable until about three years ago. Fortunately, my lesson wasn't learned after a fire broke out; rather, it was after reading about such an incident in a magazine I perused while in my dentist's waiting area. According to that article, as well as one that appears in the current edition of Men's Health, there are close to 315 dryer-fire deaths each year, all of which are directly related to an excess of lint stored in the trap.
How often should you change your dryer lint trap? Since I of course had no idea, I just looked it up. Based on what I read on About.com, it should be cleaned before every use. Not only will it lessen the chance of starting a bonfire, but it will also save you money.
California employers can fire over medical marijuana
Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss
The highest court in the state of California has ruled in favor of companies who fire employees using marijuana. Even if that drug is being prescribed in a medicinal nature, employers can still let their workers go. Ragingwire Inc. fired one of their own for using the substance to treat back pain. This is sure to cause some controversy, but a 5-2 ruling supports the justices' decision. The company argues that pot is still illegal from a federal standpoint, and California laws don't change that. They have a good point, because if a national corporation were to employ a drug-using individual, they could possibly lose federal contracts.
Besides, would you feel safe working with someone under that influence? What if they were regularly using Valium and operating machinery? Since the employee was recommended this use by a doctor, he shouldn't have been at work and rather taken off time to recover like any other injury. California has seen its fair share of discrimination complaints about this issue, so its obvious the problem won't go away any time soon.
Surgery fires: They happen more often than you think!
The American Society of Anesthesiologists is getting ready to do something this fall that it has never done before: issue guidelines aimed at preventing surgery fires. Who knew that there are 50 to 100 surgery fires each year, and of those fires 20% of the patients are severely burned and disfigured while 1 or 2 unfortunate souls die as a result? Of all the things that come to mind when thinking "things that can go wrong during surgery" having the surgical area and patient burst into flames isn't one of them. But it happens, and it happens often enough that there are going to be standards to help reduce the odds. That's scary.Smokey day? Stay inside!
Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss, Fitness, Alternative & Green Health
Here in Florida, we're dealing with some nasty forest fires that are filling our air with smoke. In fact, I believe the nearest actual fire to me is about 20 miles away, but I literally have ashes falling on my head as I step outside, and the smoke is so thick you can't see more than a couple of blocks away. If you're in a similar situation I have one suggestion for you. Stay inside as much as possible!
My son has asthma, and we are allowing him exposure to the elements as little as possible. If you care for someone with respiratory issues, keep them inside as well. It's startling to walk outside and have to squint to see. I personally don't have any particular health concerns, but as I briefly walked to my car from a friends house I grew an instant headache and sore throat.
Pay attention. No exercising outdoors. Keep your windows rolled up, and if you have asthma or care for someone with it......keep that albuterol handy. Take care.
Keep your home healthy: Repairs you should never ignore
If you're getting busy around this time of year with Spring Cleaning around your home, it might not be a bad idea to keep your eyes peeled for some needed repairs and basic home maintenance. Although some repairs are merely for appearance, or maybe resale value, others can be much more serious and impact more than you might think -- namely the health of you and your family.Covering the obvious problems water leaks can cause to flickering lights indicating increased risk of fire and skyrocketing fuel bills signaling furnace problems, this basic rundown of symptoms and causes (and what to do about them) could be a lifesaver, literally.
