Are all waters created equal? I think not. While they're elementally the same, it's widely believed that there's a difference between the different tap bottled, spring and nutrient-infused waters. Which one is the best, and should you be spending money to get it? Glee Magazine has rated several aquas, including those coming from in-home filters, those coming out of bottles and those with added pizazz. The winners are:
  • Brita and PUR water filtration systems, which are eco-friendly because you don't waste all those water bottles -- you just make it at home!
  • Iceland Spring and LeBleu waters won the taste test for plain bottled waters
  • San Pellegrino won the taste test for flavoured or carbonated waters
What's your favourite water? I guess I'm a bit of a simple sally -- I stick to drinking just plain old tap water.

Bottled vs tap: the truth about water

Healthy Habits, Diet & Weight Loss

I am and have always been a tap water drinker. I have friends who will gasp at this admission and tell me I'm nuts, that I'm putting myself in danger, but honestly, I don't see anything wrong with tap water. Water is water, right? And unless my local government issues a water warning, I don't see any need to filter my water, and I've yet to get sick from it.

According to this article, I'm not doing myself any harm, because tap water doesn't appear to be any less or more healthy than bottled water. So save your pennies and fill up at the sink. Unless you like bottled water for the taste, but that article points out that in a blind taste test, tap water fared quite well, while Evian was described as tasting like toilet water.

Which do you prefer -- tap or bottled?

Killing mold, bacteria, and germs the natural way

Healthy Home, Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health

Inhaling chlorine or bleach is harmful to the lungs and heart and has been linked to certain cancers also. So why do most people use it to clean around the house in their kitchens, bathrooms and play areas for their children? It is marketed as the main component in almost all bathroom mildew and mold cleaning products. Cleaning away bacteria and mold does not have to be harmful to your body. Vinegar is not just for salads and soups. It kills bacteria, germs, and mold and is natural. Keep a clean spray bottle filled with straight 5 percent vinegar in your kitchen near your cutting board, and in your bathroom, and use them for cleaning. If you have mold problems, the main mold killer is to prevent moisture from becoming the breeding ground for mold. When you clean the surface of an area in your home, if you use baking soda, it will prevent any mold and mildew from growing. This is because the PH factor in the baking soda is not conducive to mold growth and mold, especially black mold will not grow when it is present. Vinegar is another natural mold killer that you can use. Baking soda and vinegar are also less expensive than all the marketed cleaning supplies. Vinegar is a great window cleaner also. The smell of vinegar dissipates within a few hours.

If you have mold allergies there are some natural and less harmful ways to kill mold. Using a hepa filter or an ozone generator are two combined methods that give you optimum mold fighting abilities and keep you from breathing harmful fumes. You can check out your local hardware stores for ozone generators designed specifically for killing mold.

The fluid of life

Healthy Home, HealthWatch, Diet & Weight Loss, Celebs & Entertainment, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements

Ever wonder what's in your water? Do you stay in the know with your local news alerts? I was shocked to find out three whole days later about a water boil alert in our area. So how can we protect ourselves from drinking contaminated water if our every day lives are too busy to stay up to date with everything in our local news? And what is the best way to protect ourselves?

Installing a Reverse Osmosis System on your kitchen sink water supply is one of the best investments you can make for peace of mind and good clean healthy water. There are lots of brands out there on the market so be sure to read closely about the warranties, how often you have to change filters, the costs of the filters and how easy it is to change them, the speed in which the system filters your water and how large the holding tank is. And remember charcoal filters will remove odor from water and chlorine to make the taste better, but they do not take out all chemicals and nitrates in your water. Reverse Osmosis is the best and most cost efficient way to do this. Take it from someone who was in the utility business and has researched water thoroughly.

Boiling water will kill some bacteria but it only intensifies some chemicals and nitrates. Don't be fooled by bottled water either. There are very few regulations on bottled water and anyone can slap a label on a bottle of water and sell it. Read the fine print on where that water comes from and how it is filtered. Bottled water is the number one selling drink in the United States and nothing governs it to make sure it is completely safe. So take the steps to make it safe for you and read the labels on your water and do something to make sure that your home water supply is the healthiest and safest it can be.

So here's to drinking healthy and wisely. Water is the fluid of life. It is one of the the most essential things a body needs to operate totally functional. Cheers and bottoms up.

Does our hair need filtered water?

Reviews & Products, Alternative & Green Health

When I heard about this product, my first reaction was to laugh. That was, until a few seconds later, when I realized that not only did I want one but also that it actually makes a lot of sense. The Beauty Water Shower Purification System is water filter that installs onto your shower head.

Invented by celebrity stylist Jonathan Antin, its creation came from a place of pure vanity - Jonathan is known for asking clients to shampoo their hair using bottled spring water the day before a big shoot in order to look their best. But I say this product has bigger and better uses than just making your hair look better.

We're concerned enough about the chlorine, metals, and other chemicals in our water to filter it before drinking it. It makes sense that we'd take steps to control the amounts of those same substances that we expose our skin and hair to (and also the skin and hair of our kids)! I just wish the name was something that sounded less like a late-night infomercial product.
