Fitzness Food: Field Greens Salad with Grilled Salmon

Besides the different things we do and wear from season to season, the foods we eat vary dramatically as well. The snow keeps hearty stews on the stove and hot drinks in our hands. The summer however, propels us to brew ice cold tea and lighten up a little at mealtime. I found a recipe I like a lot from the book Delicious Disney, The Disney Chefs with Pam Brandon.

The Field Greens Salad with Grilled Salmon just feels right this time of year. It's a delicious dish you can gobble up tonight and not pay the price in your swimsuit tomorrow. I've placed it on page 38 of my recipe book on Fitzness.com. Enjoy!

When jog strollers threaten a run

I packed my 38-pound five-year-old into a jog stroller this morning and pushed him up and down six hills in my neighborhood. It felt good -- the early-morning workout, the time with Danny, the extra effort it took to heave him up incline after incline. It was peaceful too. We were the only ones braving the hills at the time so no one was in our way. We didn't bother anyone either. Jog strollers can be problematic, though. There's a certain etiquette, actually, for these exercise contraptions.

As long as you're walking, jogging, or strolling through parks and on sidewalks, you have nothing to worry about. But head into a race event with your jog stroller and beware. You may be shunned as you crowd out fellow participants and shout "on your left" declarations as you pass your opponents by. Runners just don't want to be beaten by strollers and worse yet, tripped by them. USA Track & Field race directors don't even allow them.

The message here is this: Think before you stroll. Make sure your kid and your apparatus are appropriate for the setting you seek. And before you register for your next race event, check to make sure it's a stroller-friendly event.

Working in the Workouts: Running the bases

My husband, a baseball editor for a national newspaper, taught our daughter how to say "pitching mound" when she was about 18 months old. We are lucky to have a field down the street. We drive by it every time we go somewhere in the car and every time we do, our daughter yells "pitching mound!" with gleeful delight.

We've now started making treks on foot down to the field on a semi-regular basis. And our little girl, now almost three, is learning about the rest of the landscape covered with red dirt and grass and framed by two dugouts. She isn't skilled enough to hit yet. Not even off of a tee. But boy do we run those bases. Over and over. And we jump on them. And we cheer at home plate.

By the time we've walked there and back and run the bases a few times, I figure we got more exercise than most players do during a whole game. And it certainly didn't take nine innings to do it. Quick and easy workout, and the kid's exhausted. Perfect!

Anthony Field of The Wiggles was not someone I'd imagine would change my own personal level of fitness. He's a Wiggle. In fact, all of my personal training clients half-lovingly refer to him as "Damn Wiggle". Why? Because ever since I met the hot looking boy in blue, they've all been stuck doing lots and lots of pull-ups. They're all infinitely stronger with way better abs as well. I too, am fierce on the bar. Thanks Anthony!

And just FYI. Before Anthony began training like this he was a bunch heavier. Still handsome, but there was certainly much more of him. The part 2 video I'll be posting next week will simply make you drool. The boy looks wicked in his tight Under Armour shirt. Want to look that hot too? Take a looksy at this!

Pull up like this Wiggle does

If you haven't already done so, you must visit Fitz's website Fitzness.com for a look at her encounter with the blue Wiggle Anthony Field. In the bottom right-hand corner of her site you'll find a once-pudgier Wiggle working his magic with a pull-up bar. He swears by it -- he loves a pair of rings too -- and says he's used nothing but his own body weight to transform his physique. What a physique it is.

Fitz told me I should take a stab at this pull-up bar thing. She's incorporated it into her workout routine and says it's really making a difference in her abs. That's what I need -- different abs -- so I gave it try. We happen to have a bar here at my house and so I gave it a whirl. Well, a whirl implies I made something happen with that bar. I did not. I simply hung there. I tried to lift my body but it never did budge. I almost pulled my arm from its socket in my struggle to make a move, but progress? Nope. The fit and trim Wiggle says that's OK. If you can't do anything but hang, then just hang. Keep at it and eventually, you'll make strides.

Mr. Field makes pull ups look effortless. At this point, maybe they are for him. But I bet when he was heavier and not so agile, they weren't such a cinch. Success takes time, patience, determination, and lots of practice. Once I muster up this bundle of characteristics, maybe I'll be able to pull up my entire 135 pounds. Maybe Fitz will feature me on her website too.

Dr. Oz makes good on pull-up promise

In my December interview with Oprah Winfrey's health expert, Dr. Oz, I harassed him about not doing real pull-ups with a bar. (He was using the Gravitron). I gave him a bit of a ration, detailed in his Celebrity Fitzness Report interview, and he promised to get a bar and start doing them. He was very inspired viewing this video of Anthony Field of The Wiggles performing an amazing pull-up routine. So, I emailed Dr. Oz some links on where to get pull-up bars etc. and harassed him only a teeny bit more.

Well, Friday I randomly sent him an email asking "how are the pull-ups coming"? His awesome response was that he just filmed an Oprah show and demonstrated 21 pull-ups on air! Hooray for Dr. Oz! The show will air tomorrow, Tuesday February 5th and I'm looking forward to it. I'm so proud of him!

Insane fitness video segment to PULL you out of your slump

I recently went back to work with Anthony Field of The Wiggles, and finally have his wild new training tactics on film for the world to see. Think you're doing your best at the gym? Think adding more plates to the end of that bar you bench with is the toughest thing you can do? Think again!

I've trained with tons of athletes from around the world and have never seen any one of them (outside Cirque Du Soleil) perform such a show of pure strength as part of their regular training routine. Thanks to my first encounter with Anthony this summer ...my gym is now full of men, women and children of all ages Getting Strong like this Wiggle said we should.

Colin Egglesfield is the owner of the magnificent body we see on the Calvin Klein underwear box (at right). Colin has been generous enough to share a clear shot of his abs with us, and also some advice on how to get yours to look more like his!

We chatted a bit the other day for his feature in an upcoming Celebrity Fitzness Report here on ThatsFit.com. I found it refreshing to hear how hard he works to stay in great shape. He's not 'genetically gifted', he's a man who's willing to do the work it takes to earn a body worthy of massive billboards. Read the description of Colin's eating habits and training schedule for when he has a CK shoot on the horizon. Take note of the fact that he does not starve or suffer in any way. He just chooses lean nutritious food, and works out like a monster.Thank you Colin. Not only for making my eyes so happy, but for sharing your fantastic strategies for becoming a physical masterpiece.

The kiddie mosh pit rules!

A few days ago I took my two children, and their two best friends to a Wiggles concert in Kissimmee, Florida and am so grateful I did. Along with the incredible fitness video segments I shot backstage with the gorgeous blue Wiggle, Anthony Field.....it turned out to be one of my children Ginger (4) and Parker's (2) favorite experiences ever.

Before the show, my whole brood got to meet The Wiggles and have a picture taken at the official "meet and greet" session. Traditionally the session is designed for the group to spend time with special needs children. Mine are not, but we were fortunate to have the opportunity. The Wiggles perform about 200 shows each year around the world, but when it came to this special time with the meet and greet children the guys made each child feel really important; the kind of treatment that would bring any Mommy to tears. Bursting with smiles and tender voices, I was impressed at how these men related to the little ones. Hard to describe. The four I took were both shy and excited while meeting the group. Afterward, each maintained a death-grip on the Polaroid's they were given featuring themselves with the band.

Once we were seated in our 'hot potato" seats on the floor in front of the stage, the real fun began. The atmosphere was electric and the kids were ecstatic. The show is bright, colorful, busy and just full of fun! The music also happened to be perfect. Now, I've seen just about every big name performer on tour in the U.S. and there is something unique about singers/bands who actually sound in person the way that they sound on the radio or television. The Wiggles are like that. You get what you came for, you know? You get to enjoy the songs you love in the way that you know them.

Which Wiggle can kick your A**?

There's two actually! Both Anthony Field, the blue Wiggle and Paul Paddick (Paddie), who plays Captain Feathersword would be really tough contenders. How do I know this? I trained with them. Big deal you say!? Well, the big deal is that I know the difference between guys who exercise and guys who could pummel you. I'm not only a fitness expert, but I've been competitively kickboxing and working with the ISKA since 1995. I've sat ringside and wrapped big belts around men who have earned the title of World Champion. Anthony and Paddie are tough!

Paddie not only looks the part, barrel chested with bulging biceps, but he's got the moves and the stamina to torture anyone who deserved it. Anthony, a former soldier in the Australian Army, is tall and lean, yet quite muscular. I personally watched the man do about 50 pull-ups with his legs straight out at a ninety degree angle in front of him. Highly advanced. His reach would be spectacular and the amount of force via rotation he could deliver to your poor face by the power in those abs alone would lead to utter destruction.

Laugh at The Wiggles doing silly dances all you want as your kids rock out with them each morning. Just make sure you don't do it if you should cross them in person! Since they are such kind and gentle souls, I would guess they'd let you off the hook...but I still wouldn't advise taking the chance!

Packing the perfect lunch

No matter who you pack a lunch for, plan for it to be healthy, tasty and interesting. I just read a neat little article in my local newspaper,written by Antonia Robinson, which had tons of great tips Thought you'd enjoy some of hers and some of mine. Bon apetit!

  • Include items from each food group.
  • Don't pack the same flavors each day.
  • Pick colorful, crunchy and tasty foods.
  • Include food the child likes.
  • Pack most of the lunch the night before.
  • Dinner leftovers also make a good lunch.
  • Use a thermos for hot foods and cold packs for cold foods.
  • Avoid sodas and juices.
  • Make sure you include fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Think outside the box! Pack sushi, veggie lasagna, or rotisserie chicken.
  • Some soups taste great at room temp. if a microwave is not available. Give em a shot!
  • Cold or wet items will cause a paper bag to rip. Go for plastic or use an official insulated lunch box/bag.
  • Freeze a water bottle the night before and put it in your lunch box. It will keep other things cool and melt just enough so it's perfectly chilled and drinkable by lunch time.
  • Include a sweet note or some stickers to add some fun to the meal.
