This week we are focusing on detoxing the body, mind, relationships, as well as our environment. But, before we can begin to detox anything in our lives, we must first start with our bodies.
Fortunately, eating cleansing food is easier than you may think. Below you will find the ten top foods to assist you in cleansing your body. Remember, it is imperative that the foods you consume in this cleansing process are all organic. Conventional foods are packed full of toxic pesticides, which is obviously counter-productive to the goal of detoxing!
These foods will provide nutritionally dense liquids that will flush nasty toxins out while pouring nutrients in. You will be adding lots of fiber to keep your gastrointestinal tract in shape. These foods will also provide energizing and cleansing enzymes to the liver, which is your body's detox headquarters.

Top 10 Detox-Definites
- Green leafy vegetables. Eat lots of organic, raw, green, leafy vegetables. Green is the goddess of detox. These veggies will provide the necessary chlorophyll to clean out environmental toxins, as well as protect the liver.
- Lemons. The most important vitamin for effective detoxing is vitamin C. Fresh lemon-water provides the fluid necessary to keep fluids moving throughout the body. Vitamin C will assist in converting toxins into a water-soluble that our body can easily eliminate.
- Watercress. Rich in minerals, this fabulous diuretic will keep your intestines in shape so that can keep everything moving and dumping out of your body. An added benefit ... watercress is also rich in minerals.
- Garlic. This flavor enhancing bulb activates important enzymes in the liver to filter out the junk. Just make sure your honey is getting plenty. If you are going to be stinky, you will want your partner stinking right along with you!
- Green Tea. Rich in antioxidants, green tea speeds liver activity and will provide another source for healthy fluids. Squeeze some lemon in your green tea and get an added benefit.
- Broccoli Sprouts. These little organic, broccoli babies provide 20 to 50 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than a fully grown broccoli..
- Sesame seeds. Sesame seeds protect the liver cells from effects of alcohol and environmental toxins. Puree sesame seeds to create a tahini paste and mix it into various spreads such as hummus or on sandwiches or even in a stir-fry.
- Cabbage. Cabbage has both of the two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver. For the best results, eat organic cabbage in its raw form.
- Psyllium. This plant is rich insoluble fiber. Psyllium is the Mr. Clean for soaking up toxins and cholesterol and is also great as a colon cleanse.
- Fruits. Fruit provides a multitude of healthful detoxing agents: vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, antioxidants and mouthfuls of nutritious goodness!
'No such thing' as a detox?
Have you ever considered a 'detox' diet (or weekend, heh) that would purge your system of unwanted junk? Even more, were you able to lose a substantial amount of weight from using detox methods? I have, although staying detoxed using healthy eating and drinking is now a lifestyle choice. But, do detox diets actually work within the goal framework of getting someone to lose weight and keep it off? Dietitian Joanna McMillan-Price says that, "really there is no such thing as a detox" -- but do you agree?
McMillan correctly points out that the liver continually detoxes the body anyway, so what are you really accomplishing with a detox diet? Probably nothing, she concluded. But, if you feel better after detoxing yourself, there's nothing wrong with that at all. Jettisoning bad food and beverage choices is always a good thing.
Considering a "detox" diet soon?
Some of the rage among Hollywood stars these days is a "detox" diet. These are diets that attempt to rid the body of stored contaminants and flush the system out in preparation for a healthier nutrition lifestyle.Do they work? Yes they do, from my personal experience. Before you make radical (and healthier) changes to your diet, consider detoxing once you've consulted with your physician.
In short, detoxing boosts your body's nutritional intake and sheds toxins such as processed food chemicals and environmental pollutants. Ask a nutritionist what they think about detoxing, but you'll probably know the answer before you ask.

Are "detox" products worth it? I like to hear the word "detoxification" in relation to dieting and eating right, since the word alone implies that everything else if actually a "toxifier" of sorts. In many cases these days, that is very true. The gamut of chemicals and other junk in so many foods could easily be classified as "toxic" to anyone who has researched all the specifics. But, to detox yourself from all these products, do you need some magical supplement or pill? Hardly. It's pretty obvious to state that the human body was designed for the efficient processing of good nutrition while actively detoxifying the body of bad food components -- no drugs needed here (in most cases).
Are all these products worth it? I've you've bought one and had success, I'd like to hear your story in a comment. It's hard to be objective here sometimes, since buying a detox product and it being attributable to your body's detox process is a pretty loose connection unless you're really paying attention to all other variables.
