This past week we asked (and confessed), "What's your most outrageous guilty pleasure treat/snack? (Ours would have to be fair treats: Kettle corn, funnel cakes and more!)"
Here's what our fellow getting-fit Twitterers had to say:
boschae@HealthPop Pralines and Cream ice cream covered in hot fudge with whipped cream and of course a cherry on top! Yummmmm!
bodybypizza@HealthPop NACHOSSSSSSSSSSS
jend420@Thats_Fit my guilty pleasure -- triple layer cheesecake we make at Thxgvg. Topped with ganache! What ISN'T amazing when topped in ganache?
Dieting - Food Is Not Your Enemy

That's Fit: In your book you say that "dessert can be dinner." Under what circumstances?
Dr. Snyderman: There are times when you want the chocolate cake or crème brûlée more than anything. If that's the case and the craving needs to be satisfied, so be it. Have the chocolate cake for dinner. Count the 300 calories as your entrée and balance the rest of the calories around that. You won't take much of a ding nutritionally...but you will satisfy the urge to have your desert and by making it your entrée you make it special and can move on to a more balanced diet the next day. It's okay. You don't go to diet hell for such a transgression. I'm also a believer in writing down the foods I eat. That keeps me honest.
Fitz's Fat Free Cream Cheese Frosting Recipe
Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements
Frosting, of course, will never reach the 'healthy factor' of fresh fruit and vegetables. It can, however, be made more wisely to preserve the sweet flavor and creaminess while excluding all the fat.
My Fat Free Cream Cheese Frosting tastes amazing, spreads on easily and is the perfect substitution for the full-fat stuff. And ... if you're eager to go a bit further with it, substitute the sugar for Splenda and you'll have yourself a sugar-free treat as well.

Q. Happy Holidays Fitz! I'll be hosting a Christmas party for some friends and family members next week and I need some help. I'm providing a healthy dinner buffet, but am stuck on a "not so awful for you" dessert. I could stick with fruit, but I think I should provide something more traditional. Have any ideas? Thanks in advance. Nina
A. Merry Christmas, Nina! I love your question because I am an expert on super substitutions. I can and do make almost every type of dessert in a more nutritious way. And! I do it without sacrificing flavor. Isn't that fancy? Oddly enough, if I weren't a fitness professional, I'd want to be a baker. I love baking! I'm just the weird kind of baker who hasn't owned oil or butter for more than 10 years. This forces me to be creative.
You Told Us ... What Your Favourite Thanksgiving Dish Is

Ah Thanksgiving. Is there anything better than a day dedicated to food, family, friends and fabulous slothfulness? It's all great, but one of our favourite aspects of the day is the food.
So last week, I asked you what your favourite Thanksgiving Day dish is. Here's what you had to say:
- 32 percent of you love the stuffing.
- 22 percent of you love potatoes -- either mashed or sweet.
- 20 percent of you love turkey the best.
- 16 percent of you hold out for dessert -- it's your favourite part of the meal.
- 8 percent of you love the veggies.
- 2 percent of you are crazy about cranberry sauce.
Thanks for sharing ... though all of a sudden. I'm feeling a bit hungry.

Q. Fitz, I'm sick of feeling sick at the end of Thanksgiving Day. I seem to eat all day, even when I'm not hungry. I literally feel like the clothes I put on that morning don't fit me anymore. I'm dreading it this week. What do I do? Alex
A. Gobble Gobble, Alex! I mean ... don't Gobble Gobble, Alex. (Bad joke, I know). Holidays, particularly Thanksgiving, often lead to really weird amounts of mindless eating. It doesn't help that this particular day is actually based on a feast. Darn Pilgrims! Why couldn't they show their gratitude with a running race? I can help you avoid this scenario, though. No one likes to unbutton their jeans to be able to sit down. It's uncomfortable, embarrassing and depressing. So let's get proactive, make a plan and stick with it.
Thanksgiving Dinner - How Many Calories?

Got Thanksgiving plans? Of course, you do. You'll get together with friends, family or both, either at their house or yours. A few people will work feverishly in the kitchen, while the others will gobble up appys and drinks. Finally, everyone will gather together in merriment, and the grand finale will happen: The serving of the prodigal meal. Most will go back for seconds, some will undo the top button on their pants, some will thank their lucky stars they wore fat pants. Then most of us will fall asleep in the living room. Sound familiar?
Thanksgiving -- 'tis the season for over-indulgence. But just how much over-indulgence are we talking here?
What's Your Favourite Thanksgiving Dish?

Here at That's Fit, we're constantly telling you what we think about things, but sometimes it's nice to know what you think. So from time to time, we'll ask you a question. Don't be afraid to speak up -- we love feedback.
We Canadians had our Thanksgiving dinner more than a month ago, so it's with much jealousy that I remind you that Thanksgiving is coming up, you lucky jerks. If you haven't guessed, I am crazy about turkey, stuffing and all the dishes in between.
Come on, indulge me. Tell me what part of Thanksgiving dinner you're looking most forward to.

Apple Pie - How Many Calories?

Pumpkin pie is the thing to eat this time of year -- it's a Thanksgiving staple and in my family, there's usually enough pie left over to last us for a week. But not everyone likes pumpkin pie and for that reason (as well as the fact that some people have two types of pie to devour), many families offer varieties of pies to choose from. Our family, for instance, always has a fresh apple pie on stand-by.
Apple pie sounds somewhat healthy -- warm apples gently sweetened and spiced, oozing out of a flaky crust -- but we all know better than to assume that healthy sounding equals healthy. Particularly when there's the possibility of ice cream involved. So what do you think?
How Many Calories ... in a slice of carrot cake?
I'm not a sugar addict, but I do have a bit of a problem with willpower. More specifically, when something sweet is offered up, I sometime find myself powerless to resist. You know the occasions I speak of -- birthdays, anniversary parties, dinner at a neighbours house. You tell yourself it's rude to turn down a slice of cake, but the truth is, it's just too hard to say no. But if you're counting calories do you have to say no? How much harm can one slice do? Can you make up for a sweet treat with an extra half hour on the treadmill? Good question. Let's find out, using one of the healthier-sounding desserts as an example:
Love sweets? Blame your folks
There's a story in my family about my great-grandmother baking a pie for the family. She tried a sliver, just to make sure it was good, and then another, and then another. Well, she ended up having to bake another pie because, by the time she finished "testing" it, there was nothing left. Obviously it didn't happen much -- she was very thin -- but I've always identified with her through this story. This has never happened to me (honest), but it makes me wonder if a recent University of Toronto study is on to something. It found that people with a "genetic quirk" drank more sugary drinks, ate more sweets, and consumed more calories from the extra sugar. It's not surprising that these folks weighed more and had larger waists.
Personally, I don't think anyone should blame their genes for having a hard time putting down the cookies -- there are a lot of other factors involved in weight gain and loss. But, it makes me wonder if maybe Great-Grandma Zahrt passed down a genetic quirk.
Fitz's Cool Tools: Element Bars -- Design your own!
Diet & Weight Loss, Reviews & Products, Nutrition & Supplements
I just received a few Element Bars in the mail, and instantly knew I'd need to share them with you. If you're a person who likes to have a protein/energy bar on occasion when you can't grab a meal, or uses them as a healthier version of snacks or desserts ... Element Bars are a fantastic choice. Why? You can design them yourself!
The process is really quite fun, and you'd be surprised how personalized these bars can be. You get to choose things like: bar texture, fruits, nuts, sweets, and nutritional boosters. Once you've made your purchase, the bar you receive in the mail will literally be a custom bar created by you!
I ordered a few of the most popular Element Bars and enjoyed them all. My favorite was "Chocolate Nut Pie". I couldn't decide whether this bar tasted more like chocolate chip cookie dough or brownies, but either way ... it was delicious. I'm actually in the process of trying to keep lean for a photo shoot coming up for of all things, my abs. Ugh! But the bars I chose are high in protein and fiber and low in sugars, so fortunately they fit in with my plan.
You don't have to skip dessert
Diet & Weight Loss, Nutrition & Supplements
If you're looking to lose pounds, chances are the first thing you'll cut out is dessert. After all, eating a bunch of sugar after the biggest meal of the day is probably not the best diet choice, right? But if dessert is your favourite meal of the day, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to eat your sweets and lose weight too. FitSugar recently compiled a list of their favourite light desserts -- plus here are some of mine:
- Fruit and Light Cool Whip. Three teaspoons of Light Cool Whip has only 35 calories. Pair that with a handful of fresh, healthy, antioxidant-rich berries and you've got a perfect sweet treat.
- Jello or fat-free pudding. Both are very low-cal and very sweet. Opt for the sugar-free variety and you're consuming virtually no calories.
- Warm milk with a touch of honey. This one not only satisfies a sweet tooth, it helps you get to sleep too.
What's your favourite healthy sweet treat?
